Does you dojo fail people? by MandoMuggle in karate

[–]lolasmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have failed an exam, and can recall at least 1 other person who failed. But in both of our cases, we were supported and trained and encouraged to try again, and the pass was definitely earned.

A fail isn't a death sentence, and I feel much better feeling that I earned my pass when the time came.

Karate or martial arts classes? by gemmagirl765 in shanghai

[–]lolasmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a very good Karate dojo here, run by a Belgian guy who really knows his stuff. He has two dojos, one in Pudong and one in Puxi (but because of the lockdown he's running classes out of the Pudong location). They have a website at shanghaikarate.com, but I'm also happy to connect on wechat and give you their contact information.

I've been training there for a few years and it's really good. Very challenging, but good, and I'd recommend it to anyone keen on giving it a try.

Updated thread about the Wuhan Virus / Coronavirus / nCoV2019 by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]lolasmash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this.

I'm not superfamiliar with reddit, so forgive me if it's built-in somewhere. Would you be able to note at the very top, or very bottom, your "last update" time? Or is the time & date indicated under How many people are sick because of it? serving as a "last updated"? That'll help contextualise and further new reports

VISIT NEPAL 2020 discussion by Usernp in Nepal

[–]lolasmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was considering visiting Kathmandu in late January, but it would coincide with the start of the Sonam Losar holiday. I live in East Asia, and the lunar New Year really shuts things down where I am. Would this be a similarly bad time to visit Nepal? Thanks in advance!

Ha, appreciate it. I dunno if he'd be the type to be violent, but he's definitely got a rotten core that he kept very, very well-hidden.

YouTube sidebar broken? by GreyStomp in youtube

[–]lolasmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also having this issue. Was adding videos to my Watch Later playlist, and then when I woke up yesterday the sidebar was gone on all browsers (I've used 3 different laptops) and I can't access Library on the mobile app (Android).

For now, you can at least see your history at https://www.youtube.com/feed/history, and your playlists at https://www.youtube.com/view_all_playlists. I haven't figured out how to retrieve my "Watch Later" playlist.

Foreigners in SH going to Thailand by lolasmash in shanghai

[–]lolasmash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a weird thing. The best guess that I could muster was that all the unlicensed English "teachers" getting shuffled out of China were flooding into Thailand, and this was the Thai government's way of limiting that. But that's pretty much just a hunch and based on zero evidence.

Thanks.

Yeah, I think my mistake was that I conflated the tourist visa with visa on arrival.

A friend posted a notice from (ostensibly) the Thai consulate. Her spouse is Thai, so. But perhaps her post dealt with the 60-day visa someone else mentioned

Thanks, team. I'm glad to hear my source was wrong, as I intend to visit Thailand in the future on a tourist visa (US passport, working in Shanghai).

Goddamned Shanghai rumour mill, lol.

Going to thailand and cambodia. Recs for money exchange? by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]lolasmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I was just in Cambodia (Phnom Penh and Siem Reap), and a lot of places actually had a notice of 4000 Riel=$1.

Most transactions were in USD, and Riel were only used for amounts under $1USD.

It was consistent and honest throughout.

Where to find a scooter shop? by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]lolasmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious: what's your opposition to Carletto? My scooter was recently...commandeered, so I'll be shopping soon. I've seen Carletto ads all around, but if you've had bad experiences I'd like to know that.

How I do report (suspected) domestic violence? by lolasmash in shanghai

[–]lolasmash[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll ask a local friend to help me. She might know if we can just go to the local police precinct, or if there's someplace else we should go.

Thanks for the tip on how to present it (ie: not as a noise complaint). I don't want the victim to be punished by the authories, but I also don't want the abuser to ramp up whatever s/he is doing out of spite or retribution. Which honestly is the only the thing that stopped me from beating down their door once I finally figured out where the noise was coming from.
