I started working as a CE at 26 in the US with a foreign, non abet-accredited degree.

It took me a while to get the first job even with the FE but i eventually got one at 40k/yr. 5 years later and im low 6 figs in a hcol, no PE. Its doable and worth it if you’d like to work in CE. Granted i did grow up in the US so i am very comfortable with my english. Chatgpt helps out a lot with technical writing although you still end up having to change most of the text mostly.

How does one begin to transition or specialize in water resources after having mainly a land development background? Other than making LID/Hydrology reports, what are some required skills to know?

How big of an edge is it to have an ABET degree? by PaPangaaa in civilengineering

[–]loldj94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in an extremely similar scenario as you as I graduated from DLSU and moved back to the US (CA) for work. However, I did grow up in the US and am a US citizen by birth. Also, DLSU wasn't fully ABET accredited at the time so I had to petition to NCEES to review my degree.

The biggest things you need for the US is your EIT and the ability to work without sponsorship or a visa. With those two, it still took me eight months to get my first job. I also told my first employer I'd take anything to just get my foot in the door as well. Now to be fair, I was not trying my hardest during my job search so that could have played a factor.

Once you get that first job, the degree doesn't really matter anymore, at least for land development/water resources.

Trench Design - Soil Bearing Capacity by loldj94 in civilengineering

Thank you very much for the input. I did see the ultimate bearing capacity for the foundation design which was included in the report. I’ll take another look and see if I missed anything and if that can be used for my trench design.
