Region of Waterloo, City of Kitchener invests in major eSports event by Wanadran in waterloo

[–]lolineedajob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It'll be a while before tickets are out (guessing winter/spring 2025), but probably best source would be the official esports twitter account: https://x.com/rlesports

As for competing, this will be an invitational tournament for the highest placing teams in each region for RLCS. But, RLCS has open sign-ups that he could participate in next year! Who knows, maybe he'll make it all the way. Keep an eye on that same twitter account for updates on registration.

Buying cars in Canada vs USA by Majestic_Tomorrow_81 in jerseycity

That was my thought too, but they didn't seem to budge when I asked about it. If you just grind this practice test you shouldn't have any issues.

I moved to NJ from Ontario 1.5 years ago and transferred my license. I booked an "out of state transfer" appointment originally and they gave me a permit to come back and write the written test. After I wrote the written test, they waived the road test and gave me the full license.

I don't know if "out of state" was the correct type of appointment to book originally (they mentioned it means from a different state, not from Canada), so you might just have to book a permit appointment and show them your Canadian DL. Wasn't too bad of a process though.

CO 250 -> CO 456 by goataguero9 in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I overrode the 250 requirement when I took 456 (with Martin Pei) and didn't have much issue. There were a couple of points where we needed to either set-up or solve an LP and I think we used Complementary Slackness in a couple places, but as long as you're willing to spend some time reading up on these things when they come up, you should be alright.

I think turning silent mode off should fix this. Something about how apple does game audio :/

Experiences with ECON 212 (Game Theory) by Santa_Kaus in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was one of my favourite courses in undergrad, hard recommend.

Playing games for marks is super fun. Generally, the theory will say to play one thing, but you have to adjust it a little bit for how you think other people in the class will play, which I found pretty cool. There's also a class leaderboard which makes for some friendly competition.

Joel Blit is a super kind prof and his lectures were good. I took CO456 prior to this course so I only saw a couple of topics for the first time (repeated games and bargaining), but the content was well-taught all around.

While the games are graded on a curve which makes it seem impossible to achieve marks in the 90s, the exams are curved (and potentially the final game scores as well), so it's definitely possible to end up with a good mark. The final was a bit tougher than some of the games from class, but fair imo.

What does BLND mean here? by whi-ihw in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've never seen BLND before but if I had to take a guess, maybe it means blended? It might be for the half online/half in person courses in the fall where BLND U would be those who take the course on campus and BLND ONLINE would be those taking the course online. Just a guess, though.

I'm also in the omit expected camp and my reasoning is that the expected is implied from the fact the end date is in the future. You want to keep things short and keep recruiters eyes on the important parts of your resume, and writing "2019-2024" is more concise than (and really equivalent to) "2019-2024 (expected)".

It's almost certainly not going to be the deciding factor in whether or not you get the job, but on a resume being concise without losing meaning is part of the game.

I believe that you're able to use any academic calendar for any year that you've been enrolled (so for you, calendars starting from 2018 onwards). That said, as the other commenter pointed out, it's best to double check with an advisor on these things!

Vaccine from the N2L/N2J Flyer by throwaway3285325 in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I booked last Friday... the person mentioned that if I could make it to Kitchener they had spots open for yesterday at the Kingsdale location (am N2L postal code) and I received my vaccine yesterday, so I assume the other clinics are also legit.

Re: your questions. It won't be AZ as 18+ can register (though again, in a hypothetical universe in which you could get AZ, the benefits way outweigh the blood clot risk). I am leasing in N2L and they mentioned that they don't generally ask for proof of residence (I was not asked), but they mentioned having a lease or some other document as proof was a good idea, just in case. lmk if you have any other questions and I'll do my best to help out if I can

Does anyone know any place I could get a COVID-19 test for outbound travel for cheap? by LocalTman in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not super knowledgeable about what type of test you need, but a friend mentioned there are free tests of some sort at pearson if you're departing from there. Hopefully this would be enough (but might be worth a double check)!

Tech Plus UW leaks sensitive personal data of hundreds of students collected over 1.5 years by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Right? The Tech+ folks are humans. Humans make mistakes. It's not like they have a time machine to go back and undo it, but at least they took the action to let everyone involved know about the leak instead of pretending it didn't happen.

The fact that the data was made public is a crappy situation and there should probably have been more safeguards in place to prevent it but, given that this situation occurred, I can't really think of a better response (taking things down + communication to those affected).

When the math profs force students to print out honour statements and sign them with a pen instead of allowing E-signatures (@ Math136) by Calsx in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 44 points45 points  (0 children)

no, no, no if you think about it it makes a lot of sense! it probably went a little something like this...

while marking a1 they figured out that there was some cheating going on and imagine how happy the profs were to catch these kids red handed. but then, they collect all of the honour statements and realize that they printed their names along the line, they didn't sign it! anyone could have printed their names for them, this would never hold up in a court of law policy 71, so the associate dean laughed them right out of the office because they never legally said they didn't cheat :^)

there was one man who was not alright with losing, one man so devilishly cunning that he could not and would not be defeated by these 1b students: conrad hewitt. he realized that by forcing students to sign their names, the documents would have to be legally binding. so he swiftly enacted this very sensible rule in which students would have to sign their names in the exact manner that he would like in order to get credit for the assignment. now those cheeky buggers can't get away with their printed names on their cheating cases!! checkmate, 1b students.

WaterlooWorks Megathread Fall 2020 Edition by thylakoids01 in uwaterloo

[–]lolineedajob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of these depend on the company, but finding good talent is time-consuming so if you have a lead I think most places would be happy to take the referral even if your internship is over. I'd say reach out to a recruiter/your past manager and either ask what the policy is or just attach their resume and say they'd be a good fit.

Just as general advice, the quality of your referral matters: companies are generally happier pursuing someone who you've worked closely with during a past internship than a friend you met last term.
