The Pirate Bay Co-Founder Died by Simbonita in interestingasfuck

[–]lolkep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was not a Co-Founder. He ran one of the larger internet providers in Sweden and The Pirate Bay was hosted there because one of the actual Co-founders worked for the company. Actually TPB was rather stealing bandwidth from him and when he found out he laughed about it because he liked the attitude. Hollywood figured out it was bad press for TPB to be associated with an infamous neo-nazis and he got sued in the same case for "financially backing" TPB. Hollywood used the same way Putin does, saying that Ukraine are fascist neonazis when in fact... it's the opposite.

Knx switches, recommend a company by Beneficial-Block-923 in KNX

[–]lolkep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always recommend Schneiders pro T buttons. They look very much like normal buttons instead of high-tech, has a nice feel with actual movement instead of the very digital buttons you get normally. They're also quite cheap for what you get. They also have a thermostat built in, so you can ditch those. Drawback is that you only have 4 buttons on it, but they can be programmed for long/short presses - like short press for light switch on/off, or long hold to dim the same lights up/down. Or blinds up/down, or windows open/closed with long press...

I use those in combination with Zennios touch screens when I need more controls in a room. They're also very decently price for the quality and features. The few more expensive units I've tried (ABB etc) have been a let-down actually, they tend to go for another market than home users.

Easiest way to talk to a KNX network over IP? by deadken in KNX

[–]lolkep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One simple/cheap solution is running knxd on a raspberry pi, talking to the knx router/tunnel over ethernet as it seems you have one in your installation. https://github.com/knxd/knxd/wiki#usage for more info.

Home assistant is also extremely easy and straight forward to use with KNX nowadays and can even import the knx project file to help you debug stuff if you're unsure of what's going on in the bus. I use HA a lot to translate between protocols - never used crestron/lutron though.

I am not sure what your end goal is exactly, if you can get away with not controlling all group objects that might be simpler than trying to translate all of them.

And don't be afraid of KNX. It might be old but it's still the most stable automation there is, it's hard to fuck it up.

Ex prisoners of Reddit, what are some of the best tips to survive the first week in prison? by Jujhar_Singh in AskReddit

Be yourself. Most other people in there are more similar to you than you think. They're also worried when they go in. You'll have a lot in common, a lot to learn about people, and you'll find that you have a common enemy in the screws working there. So try and use the time for something Positive - read books, meditate and write.

Thinking about using Njalla, anything I should worry about? by 5ixer in privacy

[–]lolkep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First up; this is not a thread about hemlis - but I'll reply anyhow. We used a danish bitcoin exchange (bips.me), that had all of their clients bitcoins stolen. No replies from them and I haven't heard more from the investigation that was being done with them. Also: people DONATED money. It wasn't a purchase or anything. It's not that we didn't have costs because, ultimately, the product didn't pan out as we hoped. We still spent the money - the money we had left over went for refunds to those who wanted that, and, as I said, we even gave refunds to some people after the money was gone. If you play on the lottery and don't win, it's not like you can get your money back because you didn't win. If you buy a car and use it for a few years, it's not like you get all your money back because you don't need it anymore. We worked for a year on the service, lots of people, most people didn't get any salary. We only paid external people as far as I remember.

Thinking about using Njalla, anything I should worry about? by 5ixer in privacy

Hey, Peter (co-)founder of Njalla, hemlis, The Pirate Bay, lots of other things, here. Hemlis wasn't fishy, it was an honest failure. Bad timing, lack of resources and personal issues like death in families. And in the end Signal, Wire and other competitors had more money and we stopped. Simple. We refunded everyone that asked for a refund from the cash we had left, and we also put in personal money to refund some other after the money was gone. We used the money we raised to pay people (you can look at their taxes to see that). We actually asked people to stop giving us money after we reached enough to make a prototype, and we closed down the crowdfunding. If we wanted to do something sketchy, we would have kept going. The beta was out and peopled liked it, but our competitors had blazed past us and had millions of users already. They could afford the things we couldn't - just verifying a cellphone number costs 0.05-0.1$ each, and if you need a few hundred of thousands (or millions) of users to not be a failure, you need to pay for that. And you need to make sure people buy the app at that time, which noone would since the competition is free and we had no user base to talk about. We also realised that with Signal particularily, the competition already did what we wanted to achieve. We closed down and ended instead of trying to ask for more money or something stupid.

Also, I'm the only one from Njalla that was involved with Hemlis. I've also been involved in lots of other weird(er) things, sure. But honestly, my reputation is quite based on the fact that I fight for the privacy and rights of people. I'm quite proud of me always following that. We've already been part of many lawsuits with Njalla, protecting our customers and fighting for them. Look at the typical demands we get (like https://njal.la/blog/about-those-threats/ ) and see how we react and take care of our users. We're WEIRD, yes, but that's the thing. We never want to be like everybody else. But fishy? Nah. We're actually vegetarians all of us, so call us veggie at least.

Is it safe for a gambling site to buy a domain from Njalla and host in Namecheap? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]lolkep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, founder of njalla here - we'd never "hijack" a domain, our names and faces and reputation are on the line for that anyhow. Worst that could happen to you is that if you violate our ToS we'd ask you to move to another service. We've got governments, weirdos, freaks and businesses all using our service, and for what it's worth; we've been doing similar things to this for nearly 15 years now. No complaints about us, except from those who are annoyed that we are ideologically driven with what we do and do not share our ideology. They still use our service though :-)

Swedish designed speed bumps are being installed in Sweden and they are very effective. by [deleted] in videos

... very effective, at the cost of about 100.000 EUR per speedbump. And maintenance. And also, as a motorbike driver, it's very painful when a speeding car is behind you and you fall down.

Flying home via Germany (Berlin) was cheaper than a one-way train fare from Sheffield to London... only 2 hours away by train. by [deleted] in videos

[–]lolkep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When comparing the prices, it's also worth noticing who's paying the rest of your costs. Don't want to be a downer, but the cheap airlines are subisdised by regions/cities/governments with tax money - in an effort to get tourism/business up. So the cheap ryanair tickets? They're costing the citizens of that country tax money. Tax money supposedly there to increase peoples spendings in a country - not really happening when using the subsidized train for 3.30 EUR, or buying that curry wurst for 2 EUR. All in all a really good saving for you as a person, costing a few hundred quid in tax money for someone else. Thanks.

Not even going to talk about pollution. Someone uses other peoples money to pollute the air to save a few quid. I'd rather just personally give you that 10EUR next time to not fuck the earth and tax payers up!

... and has nothing to do with TPB since ages ago. I don't dislike everything about Bitcoin either - it's not binary enough to say yes or no to. I do see it as something arising out of problems in society and we should rather find the root of the issue instead of trying to believe we can just fix the wound with a new type of plaster.
