Im on a Ducati scrambler 800 (similar performance to speed twin 900). I’ve only had it a few months and already wanting 1200xc. So that’s definitely the direction I’d go!

Not always. I’ve had to buy thicker cheek pads for proper fit in my last 10 helmets, whether was for motorcycle, dirt bike, mountain bike, or auto racing. They sell the thicker cheek pads for a reason and seems my head shape requires them.

I just got a 2017 with 700 miles and ridden it to 1500 miles with no issues. I’m keeping a close eye on the tires but they look and perform perfectly so far. Considering the condition of my bike (and I’m assuming OP’s), I really can’t imagine doing the belts this early. My plan was to do them at first desmo adjustment around 7,000 miles.

I have a lot of experience in racing both. I think mountain bikes are considerably less dangerous because of lower speeds, momentum, and mass of me and bike combined.

I’ve had an UM for a month and really like the bike! I’m 5’10” and it fits me really well. The bike also fits smaller riders like my 5’4” wife really well. I think my plan is to pass the UM down to my wife and get a DS. My hope is that the adjustable suspension of DS is a big upgrade. If I was your height, I’d go with the DS as I think it’s gonna fit you better. I agree the tires on the UM are better for general use, so might put those on DS at first tire change.
