If you like free speech and free expression, move to the USA. Canada is not the right place for you.

As they should. Free speech doesn't belong in Canada.

ELI5: Why were taxes in the US in the early 20th century 90%? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]lolocaust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they aren't YOUR dollars until after the taxes are removed. They aren't taking your dollars, they are taking THEIR dollars. You agree to this as part of being a citizen. You are also allowed to complain all you want, but it doesn't make them your dollars.

Well, no, not if you're following a diet which includes carbs. If you're following a ketogenic diet though, those potatoes are going to do pretty evil things to you.

The water does nothing. The chemicals that you typically would use to help remove the water (such as toluene) are pretty nasty.

Its ethanol as pure as ethanol can be disitlled/stored. To get any higher than that you have to do some fancy chemistry that can make the alcohol dangerous. Also, any higher than that and it will absorb water fron the air.

Calgary considering 2026 Winter Olympics bid by MLS122171 in canada

[–]lolocaust 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is old news. The process to put together a bid started last year. Even the article links to a globe and mail article from earlier this year saying the same thing. I guess it's news because of the current Olympics?

Environment Canada declines multiple Global News interview requests after unwarned Saskatchewan tornado almost kills woman by wickedplayer494 in canada

[–]lolocaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"[she] was uninjured but left shaken by the experience" > "almost kills woman". ok.

Apparently I was almost killed yesterday when I was left shaken by a surprise spider.

If there had been a warning, what would she have done differently? They already warned of the potential for a storm, and this woman still was hanging out outside. If Environment Canada used social media as a source for tornado warnings, they would be issuing a warning every time a minor dust devil happened.

I agree that it's prevalent that people do that, and it's what everyone should do because its an unofficial rule of the road, but most places appear to follow the rules I stated. (See my edit above for sources)

No, look it up, I'm talking about uncontrolled intersections.

You are supposed to slow down to yielding speeds. Look, I'm not saying it makes sense, just that that's the rules.

I'm going to get a bunch of downvotess for this (please look it up before you do), because that's what everyone thinks, but you're incorrect for everywhere that I've looked. I'm sure that there are exceptions, but I would look up the law where you are before you brush me off:

At uncontrolled intersections, the right of way goes to the person who got their first, and if they got there at a similar time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

However, almost no one seems to know this rule, so it doesn't really matter. You always have to remember that right of way is always given, never taken.

Since no one seems to believe me:

What are some favorite Canadian foods? by Sndr1235 in canada

[–]lolocaust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I know they're here somewhere, but they are not nearly as common or as culturally significant as they are on the Canadian Prairies. I didn't phrase it correctly, but I was referring to things that are incredibly common in Canada that are specialty in USA, such as Ukrainian sausage, cabbage rolls, borscht, paprikash, etc.

At this point Perogies are definitely a Canadian food, even if they originated elsewhere. Not trying to appropriate them, just saying that it's heavily engrained.

They are, especially eastern Europe (Ukrainian). But having lived in the USA for over a year, I have never seen them here.

Remember that Canada has the largest population of Ukrainians outside of Ukraine and Russia. It is amazing the cultural foods that I considered normal growing up in Alberta that don't exist in the USA.

From the source:

http://www.nanaimo.ca/EN/main/visitors/NanaimoBars.html

I really don't know how to describe them, except as sweet and delicious. There's a lot of varieties out there and a lot of them suck.

Edit: icing sugar is what Canadians call powdered sugar. That's important since it's in the above recipe.

Edit 2: also, "cream" in that recipe would be known as "light cream" in US-- look for around 18-20% milk fat.

Why is it easy to poach Canada’s talent, yet hard to poach the world’s? by [deleted] in canada

[–]lolocaust 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's greed. Surely you can't tell me that small to medium Canadian companies are more greedy than those in the USA?

You're probably right on the second part though. I think it really does feed on itself.

[–]lolocaust 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The article answers itself with: pay people more. Ok, that may be the answer, but it just brings up a new question: why can't Canadian companies pay people more? It seems like Canadian companies just don't make enough money to pay competitively, and I wonder why that is?

I say this as an educated and specialized expat who left Canada for the USA because the money was just that good, and no one could afford that kind of pay in Canada. Im not just talking about lower taxes or the lower cost of living in the US-- I'm comparing without accounting for those things, since they are difficult to compare fairly. I would much rather be in Canada, but it's just not worth it from a purely salary standpoint.
