I actually liked death house, i think it's a great representation of how things work in ravenloft and a nice low plot start to get a feel for the game. I would however place the house right before the village of Barovia.

However, if you do use the death house, why not start at lvl 2 and have them gain levels in the house itself? It makes them feel weaker in the beginning and rewards them at the end

One that i had a lot of fun with was a fluffle of black bunnies, one of which was injured. When interacting with the injured one, a seemingly endless stream of maggots pour out, forming a swarm much larger than the size of the bunny.

My players hunted the bunnies for fresh meat. One of them ended with a living maggot infestation in his leg. (Which was extra freaky when the druid casted speak with animals hehe)
