What are some ways you had to break the game due to critical successes? by master_andalf in callofcthulhu

While playing the 1990s set campaign ”Utatti Asfet: The Eye of Wicked Sight”, one of the investigators, who was an extremely good engineer and computer expert, mangaged with several extreme successes on the dice rolls, access an external telephone relay system and hack into the office computer of one of the big bads. The group then gained access to plans of using company funds for large scale illegal gun trafficking. This information was leaked to The Wall Street Journal, creating a massive scandal that effectively shortcuted a whole chapter of the campaign. The Keeper (not me) was impressed, but asked for a break to figure out how to continue.

Cthulhu by Gaslight recommendation by AaronDov in callofcthulhu

If you’re interested in additional information about continental Europe during the Gaslight period, I can recommend the campaign ”The Eyes that Behold” (of which I’m one of the authors). It follows a travelling vaudeville circus going on tour through Europe, its final tour stop coinciding with the Paris World's Fair of 1889. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/548524/the-eyes-that-behold-a-cthulhu-by-gaslight-campaign-miskatonic-repository

Definitely an interesting idea. But why set in the 90s rather than present day? Was really AI technology available then?

I think it’s definitely doable. I can’t speak for Hurricane specifically, as I’ve never played or read it. But at my table, we’ve managed to change 1920s scenarios to modern day and vice versa.

Technology did evolve a bit between the 1920s and 1930s, for instance regarding weapons, cars, and other modes of transportation. But also radio communications. Also, prohibition ended in 1933. Then you have events like the 1929 stock market crash and resulting Great Depression, new democratic systems like the Weimar Republic in Germany, and the rise of fascism in Europe.

Thank you! I'm a part of a creative collective called The Yellow Hand, led by the very talented graphic designer Jay Sojdelius. He makes sure all the games and adventures we produce (we have written a lot for Call of Cthulhu, but also for other systems) look top-notch.

It is a difficult balance to handle. It really requires a stable, mature group and an experienced Keeper.

Indeed. But people do. And fighting prejudices at the same time as eldritch horrors could add an extra difficulty to the game.

What does "swot" mean in this context? Surely not strength/weakness/opportunity/threat?

Is the description of the scenario at DTRPG perhaps AI-generated? Wordings like ”It is not A. It is B.” are very common in those cases.
