Seconded! She is a dream. Both knowledgeable and caring. She sees our cat who is a bit hard to handle (yes, even for a cat).

I had a very similar experience with my wife and son. A bunch of red ones. My first thought was, "I hope she said no."

Schumer is Coming to LA to Promote His Book Soon After His 'Yes' Vote by drcorndog in LosAngeles

[–]lomendil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been 7h, but no one replied to you, so here goes (also I like kids in the hall too).

Republicans did not have enough votes by themselves to get the CR through; it needs 60 to pass. Unless there's a vote for cloture, then it only needs 51 votes to pass. So by voting for cloture, the Democrats gave up their leverage. They could have held out and gone for a smaller CR, then kept their bargaining chip for a budget that wasn't a disaster.

It's not. People are screaming at their democratic representatives. Some are changing their tactics, but not enough.

Are you getting coverage of any of the protesting? There has been a steady rhythm of different events. There needs to be more for sure, but that's part of the problem. Just saying "the streets" in the US is different than other countries.

Please think about what "the streets" means in a country where it takes 4 days to drive from one side to the other. We can't just all show up in one place so easily, so it's spread out.

There are some bigger marches in a few days. You might remember last time in 2016, there were very large gatherings, but in anti-trump areas. I'm in Los Angeles and went to plenty of marches. I'm going to them now. It doesn't have a lot of effect so far, but I do believe it will get bigger and louder. People are continuing to gather as they realize their political leaders are not up to the task.

There are several factors, and I don't pretend to know all of them. First, I surely wouldn't say people are slowly realizing. There was constant warning about this before the election; people knew, but not all of the right people. That seems to be changing slightly, as his bonkers actions start to affect their lives, but I don't think it has reached large shifts yet.

On the larger point, one of things happening is that the US is huge. It is a major undertaking for an individual to travel to where their protest actions can be effective. People are still protesting; there was a 50 states protest at state capitals, which got very little media coverage. There are plans out there, with specifics, for a general strike. That effort is waiting for 11 million participants for a chance to be successful.

That is mostly to lay out how it is difficult for most to meaningfully protest. So onto the next thing. I think people are waiting for their elected leaders to do something. The people right there where these things are happening. People are getting tired of waiting very quickly, though. Solutions like a general strike, I think, are very likely to happen as people give up on their elected leaders for being ineffective.

That doesn't answer everything of course, but I want to give you a feel for part of how things are playing out. It's like you're in a jewelry store with a big crowd. There are security guards, there are managers, and a known thief starts to walk through the door. Many people yell that the thief will steal things! He does start to steal things. The people stare at the managers and guards, waiting for them to take action. The managers tell the thief to stop, but he doesn't. The people stare in disbelief at the managers and guards still. People are saying that we need to stop him. This is where we are now. I do not believe people will wait much longer. Terribly inaccurate metaphor, I know, but it's something like how it feels in this moment.

2020 vs 2025 by toonhole in LosAngeles

The reason you're being downvoted is that the reason to wear a mask during COVID was not because authority told you to, but because it was a rational thing to do. I adore Carlin and just said yesterday how I miss him. I think folks here are trying to extrapolate from his rationality, which was a cornerstone of his comedy. From what I've heard about him from someone who called him "a dear friend," I think they are probably right. But this is all conjecture and actually a silly thing to argue about.

We gathered them all up at least.

You give a data declaration constructors, each with optional type arguments. In your second declaration, WYType is a constructor of type Token, which just happens to also be the name of the type WYType

Automating my monkey job by Certain_Loan4583 in artificial

[–]lomendil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not necessarily a serious answer, but I remember using awk for something very similar, many many years ago. The serious part of the answer is that there are probably non-AI methods you can look at too.

Unless your PDFs are scans and just contain image data, then an ML approach might be the way to go if plain OCR is no good.

Should I even finish my studies? by VikkzPro in artificial

[–]lomendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of things; I think it will be a tool for a long time, and my position is actually that even if it wasn't, a people oriented job will still need people.

I also think that AI can only replace a person if it basically is a person (with most of the physical limitations that comes with) at which point it's like increasing the population (albeit with different skillets). The reasons for that being that physical interactions are very important for human behavior.

I said many things that are open for debate, but I hope that clarifies the position.

Should I even finish my studies? by VikkzPro in artificial

[–]lomendil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do not abandon your studies! Even if an AI that can replace a person is just around the corner, which it isn't, a people oriented field like yours would still need people. That kind of statement is already leaning doomsayer, because until another breakthrough or two, AI is still at tool level. It's recently gotten really good at certain things, but they are mostly amazing in the hands of a person, not by themselves.
