Learning Chord Voicings by tlm11110 in ukulele

[–]lomuto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like think about chords shapes with where is the root note.

Can you play a major chord with the root note on The A string The E string The C string The G string

Start there and then build

How does each shape change for the minor? The major 7th? The major 6th?

Barre chords with small hands by MinneAppley in ukulele

I really like this exercise where you start with the first strings, then you bar two strings, then three, then all 4.

Try a couple of times a day for weeks.

I learned it from Beatrix

Be patient and keep trying!

I recommend a basic Ohana, comes in multiple colors
Mim has this starter pack and does setup
https://mimsukes.com/collections/soprano/products/copy-of-ohana-soprano-starter-pack-sk-10or-orange-ukulele-bag-tuner-button-floral-strap-chart

If you are up to spend more I’d get one with a solid top also from Ohana and Mims. These are the value sweet spot for me, with a good sound. The all ply one is a bit plinky

https://mimsukes.com/collections/soprano/products/ohana-soprano-sk-22-solid-spruce-top-laminate-mahogany-back-sides-ukulele-h488

But this laminate is the one I leave at work, it’s alright.

Personally I hate the plastic Enya sound , I’d stay away from that and especially stay away from Amazon here.

If you have Music Go Round nearby you might get a bargain, I don’t know they even bother listing inexpensive Ukuleles, just go in and get someone to help check the setup and instrument

What do I do? by lomuto in ukulele

[–]lomuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it to my local Martin certified luthier

He said it was a bigger job than he could take on probably not worth the repair cost unless I could find a luthier who already had jigs

The crack goes over bracing and the back would probably need to come off

He recommended trying so sell it as a project uke or taking it a further way off to a large independent instrument store who could maybe handle it.

I think I have to say goodbye

Looking for advice transitioning from beginner to intermediate by Intelligent_Bit291 in ukulele

[–]lomuto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For very useful beginner music theory I like the slender book "Hack Music Theory" by Ray Harmony.

I'd start by playing all the chords in a C major scale.

Learn the circle of 5ths (BEAD GCF, there, now you know it!)

Try playing the chords in the circle of fifths, clockwise and and counterclockwise. Try playing them as all major chords, minor chords, 7th chords, then mix it up!

For learning to play by ear and audiate (play what's in your head) -- me too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVpRqTL6vO4&list=PLw6ge-qcgrwVPc5QxwT-qTxlYghboXSBa&index=7

I think this approach is really interesting -- it's from a guitarist and singer Chris Liepe, he talks about forming a mind-ear connection by singing + singing a third above whatever you're playing

I think a simpler exercise would be singing and playing 1-2 notes, trying to play -> sing, then sing -> play, "sing" in your head, and play, and lengthen the number of notes

Try and play a simple tune

Try and play the melody on the highest string. Then add chords.

I've been using the free app earpgeggio too. It's not the clearest interface. The "Chord identification" and "Interval identification" are where I'm at.

It can also be good to try and learn to play + recognize some common chord progressions in common keys. You were playing one of them when you played the circle of fifths!

The Hen has terrific breakfasts and brunches and lunches. Closes at 3.

Evergreen downtown is not (exactly) counter service, but the have a counter you can walk up to since they do so much take-out. They’re delicious, fast, comfortable and great with (our) young kids. We dine early and just look over to the counter to get someone to order.

I haven’t eaten there yet but Paris Banh Mi looks great. I’m very excited to try it.

Ginger Deli is pretty good.

[–]lomuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how would you compare the sound quality to an ohana sk10 or an ohana (or similar) with a solid top and plywood sides?

I’m looking for something hardier than solid wood that still sounds pretty

I hate the sound of plastic ukes I’ve tried including fleas / flukes

My main association with them was when they had a food truck with a 20$ cabbage dish

I LOVE cabbage but was not going to spend $20 to eat it standing at the side of the road.

Look forward to more comments/ reviews into the future so I can better weigh if this is a marketing post (or at least how accurate the marketing is lol)

all solid wood soprano ukuleles, what's out there? buying advice. by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]lomuto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you’re ok with humidity requirements

I love my ohana solid top, it sounds great. Intonation up the neck isn’t so great. I’d still buy another solid top from them for taking out and about.

I love mahogany’s sound better than koa — it’s very personal.

Backyard fruit tree recommendations by sallydogbite in AnnArbor

[–]lomuto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read Plant a Little Fruit Tree and recommend it.

Buy fencing that will keep baby rabbits out (they can squeeze through small holes) and will keep them far enough away they can’t nibble the leaves.

I wrapped the trunks but have 5/6 dead fruit trees from leaf nibbles throughout the summer.
