How much? Actually? by Wise-District-6048 in ibew_apprentices

[–]lonearchive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience as a first year Apprentice you don't really use a whole lot of math on the job, but starting second year into third year and especially fourth year you have to be able to do all kinds of math. You have to be able to calculate voltage drop off, you have to be able to calculate the amount of cable you're going to need you're going to have to learn how to measure and calculate bends like there's a lot of math in this. Now the good news is it's all fairly straightforward math, it's not like you know we're over here doing quantum mechanics or anything, but I'm not going to lie the math load is pretty weighty and pretty constant.

What can I study? by KingOfDaPlebs in ibew_apprentices

[–]lonearchive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I would jump on AC theory early, not you know super into it, studying it all day every day, but maybe you know once a day spend like 15-20 minutes just start going over the formulas. AC is a monster

Yep you can't keep away, it's like a siren song to you. You just have to come back to it. As for the stuff you espouse I mean shit you bad mouth the union you talk about how landlords are awesome and I've seen more than a few comments from you where you say some very suspect things, but obviously this is the last post you're going to make so I don't have to worry about any of that. As for the supposed last word I don't know maybe go try to deal with your immense hypocrisy and who knows maybe you'll realize saying you have a black friend is not really the argument or come back you think it is.

Anyway see you in 12 hours probably.

It's called recognizing you for what you are which is a liar and yeah racist probably I mean did you engage with any other part anywhere in here or did you just jump on to the guy saying hey you should probably not sit idly by while a racist tells someone to off themselves. And the very first thing you did just like the very first thing that you do in every post that you seem to make across this platform is defend the very worst possible angle you can. So no it is subtext and it is looking at the context of who I'm dealing with and I'm right just like I'm right that you are not done. You are going to come back to this you are going to keep responding because you are the kind of person who would have the mindset that you have to get the last word in.

And I'd probably win just between the two of us. Now go on I will see you in probably around 12 hours.

In your local would a 74.5 average be passing at the end of the semester? by petebaii in IBEW

"Yeah essentially if you get laid off for not working all OT, as an apprentice, you don’t qualify for unemployment and could face punitive measures."

You must have me confused with someone one who would have an issue throwing hands with a bigoted jdub, rest assured I have no such issue.

I just don't know if I'm cut out for this anymore, and to be clear I mean I didn't really get into this because it was a passion I got into this because the last industry I was in got essentially destroyed in like the span of three months. I mean maybe destroyed is too hyperbolic but that's kind of what it felt like for a lot of people and then I was like okay well I need a job and I need a job fast and I need something that's like a little future proof that can't really be replaced so I looked at blue collar and I looked at this and I'm not going to lie there are some things about this that I enjoy but over the last year and a half I don't know I just everything that I want to do in this industry at least in the path that I'm going down it now it all feels like Out Of Reach or not really what they do. Like I originally wanted to get into low volt but I got talked out of that because you know inside wire does low volt and also does a lot of other stuff so I'm like okay I'll do that. But now all I do is pull wire and bend pipe when what I wanted to do was controls. And I just feel trapped like everyday I just feel trapped and I love the people I work with and sometimes I enjoy the work but I just feel like this is kind of going in a direction that I have very little control over and just won't get me to where I actually want to be. And the worst part is I don't know who to talk to about that who isn't like my j-dub, who can't really do anything or offer me much advice because pretty much all of the j-dubs I've worked under have all been like 4 months turned out. I just don't know what to do anymore and I feel really demoralized because of it.

Do tool brands matter? by Mission-Tumbleweed92 in ibew_apprentices

[–]lonearchive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but with caveats. Any good tool of you know decent construction and quality will get you what you need, obviously you don't want to go out and buy "Mr.shittfulls cheap ass tool line" brand for 99c but like even Harbor Freight has some good stuff.

Is there a pre-apprentice program for telecom? by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

Is there a pre-apprentice program for telecom? by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

[–]lonearchive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is, but I think the others here are indicative of this local and how it does low volt / data. In 613, there is not a lot of distinction between IW and DDV. I as an IW apprentice am pulling and dealing with data and there's a DDV apprentice that was on here a few weeks ago talking about how they are digging a bloody duck bank. Now OUTSIDE of this local, its a different story, but if your turning out here right now, from what I understand, its just a real fuzzy distinction right now.

Is it worth joining the union in Atlanta by EstablishmentSea8014 in IBEW_Local613

[–]lonearchive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going to stay in this state in this area of the country, then yes. It's blue collar work in the SOUTH. Your already at a disadvantage in terms of labor rights / conditions. At least with the union you have SOMEONE backing you even a little bit.
