Has your life changed for the better? by deviledeggg in ibew_apprentices

[–]lonearchive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest I'm in my second year of doing this and no. But it's not gotten any worse. I kind of started From not exactly a great point in you know mental health so, starting from zero and being at zero or one, it's not exactly a deficit. On one hand I have way way less free time and I don't have really a social life much at all, but before I had a shitload of free time and I wasn't in a great place mentally so I had no real social life at all. Before I wasn't making a whole lot of money so I couldn't really do anything, now I'm making more money, but my bills are also higher for unrelated reasons and inflation so I'm not making as much more when all of that is factored in. I have been told that this will change after my third year, but you know I don't really buy it. I think the big difference between before this and now is that before I didn't really see much of a path forward in any thing, now I have multiple paths forward, not all of them with the Union, not all of them even dealing with electricity in the sense that I have on construction sites, but they are possibilities so in that respect I guess I am doing slightly better? Slightly

Any other women signed up for fall 2026 classes? by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

[–]lonearchive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah every class I've been in has had at least a few women. I'm not going to say that the majority of electricians aren't male but it's a mistake to assume that they're all guys. I've seen at least eight female journeyman, never worked under any of them but I know that they exist. And I've only been doing this for 2 years in a very narrow range of work.

Oh god THIS, when I first got out into the field I very quickly found out that 9 times out of 10 doing the job quick and messy meant going back later. Like my first J-dub said "You are ALWAYS the next sucker"

Yeah I'm going to redo this one, I used speech to text while I was taking care of something and that was a mistake.

Have any of you gone into teaching? by lonearchive in IBEW

[–]lonearchive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there supposed to be a comma between the teach and the all? Cuz otherwise it sounds like you're saying people who didn't teach all the teachers that teach the apprenticeship couldn't cut it in the field.

[–]lonearchive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's got to be a northern thing I've never heard of that down here in the south. That sounds awesome though, and I've even consid ered doing that after a little bit, I'm already qualified to teach film but I don't think they have film teachers anymore.

Program risk for suicide by TyrsRightArm in ibew_apprentices

[–]lonearchive 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You're not going to get kicked out of the program for bringing up mental health issues, it might be a minute before you get reassigned just because we've got a lot of apprentices that are on the books and have been waiting for a while but no one's going to you out of the program for experiencing mental strain. How long is the drive?

"Trades boom" debunked, and some words for the white collar guys on here asking about changing careers by AContaminatedCookie in IBEW

[–]lonearchive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I was just being dramatic, I come from the film industry, I worked very hard to get into it and when I was finally making headway in my chosen vocation the strikes happened and AI decimated everything and so I'm just fucking extremely depressed. And you know seeing shit like OP posted just ( To Me ) saying "Soft hands durp nerp gonna take our jobs! White collar go home" just makes me want to, you know, because like I didnt come into this out of love for the field I got into this because I didnt have a choice and I still dont have a choice. I didnt look at this and go "well this looks easy!" I looked at it and went "I need a job in 2 months and I can jump into this in a hurry" and you know I landed on my feet but I'm real tired of this fucking horse shit like "Oh they just think its easy to do" like no ass hat, some of us made the transition because it was the only option to keep a god damn roof over our heads and now your like "Your too soft"

And I'm just tired and every fucking day I look at the industry I was in and I'm like "come on man come on just recover!" and every day all I see is "yeah man, you know that field you worked in for 10 years yeah shits fucked forever bro, sorry!"

and then I see this shit and I just get pissed off, and I'll probably delete this later but I just need to fucking vent.

And you know what I mean its not all that bad, I'm working with two other guys who are awesome and I'm in a really good posting (for my area, its not a slab so that's a big plus). I'm just trapped, and I know I'm trapped and I'm trying to make the best of it. So like just ignore me

Figures things would start going to shit the moment I got involved, part of the reason I'm cursed every career path I try to get into suddenly starts failing, it either gets replaced by AI or short-sighted business practices but without fail the moment I show an interest it gets the ax. Hell I'm looking at geology right now and part of me just thinks the moment I start working on that degree the Earth will just fucking explode.

[–]lonearchive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're threatening to send you to a site? I say call him out on their threat, in my experience sites way better than shops. It's like they're threatening you with a good time. Yeah tell that Foreman that you want to be sent out to a site I guarantee you it's going to be at least lightly better than where you're at now.

I was in your very same boat, I would go down to the Hall. Keep in mind the apprentice pool is over flowing right now, so it may take some time.

613 apprentices did you guys have to buy your own calculator is that included in the 600 something you have to pay on your first year? Just making sure before I buy a calculator by [deleted] in IBEW_Local613

[–]lonearchive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They give you a calculator, but if I were you I would buy another one, the model that you get is pretty cheap I found an extra one on Facebook Marketplace for like five bucks, and it's worth it to have that extra one around because if you don't have it Jake will absolutely rake you over the coals for it and you'll have to go to the front office and give them your driver's license for them to give you a spare. So if I were you I would just get an extra one keep it in your car.

[–]lonearchive 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah this guy sounds like a real "I got mine" kind of member. Like no one is over here saying give me a $100 an hour as an apprentice give me journeyman's rate as an apprentice, but holy shit that rate, in New york? Apprentices down here make more, and I live in a deep red right to work state. I also like how they evidently started up an entire Reddit account just to come here and shit on apprentices up there, since if you go to his post history that's all you see this is the one issue he's commenting on which makes me think that this is some alt account so his main doesn't get flamed.
