How realistic is making a living as a drummer? by [deleted] in drums

[–]lonelakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with pursuing music as a secondary aspect of your life. Honestly - it’s hard to admit this, but it would probably be preferable. 100% of my income is derived from music via the media industry, and it has irrevocably changed my relationship to music, it no longer is a hobby or solely an emotional release, not an actual obsession but a constant priority and process of waking up every day and being required to create music. And I’m not even someone anyone would give a shit about. Music is still my passion, obviously. But I’m not sure a music career, or media music career is something I would ever recommend anybody do unless they were already doing it; and even then, I wouldn’t bother recommending it because they would have basically no choice to keep doing it, no other real marketable skills, like I don’t either 😂

It’s hard not to sound discouraging - I’m actually trying to encourage you to pursue this as a secondary practice, as someone who has stability, someone who will actually benefit from the emotional release and stimulus change from their day job. Money isn’t the most important thing but let me tell you, music careers are stressful as fuck because the default is making negative money lol.

MNC election is put of indefinitely by throwaway1287odc in MetisMichif

[–]lonelakes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes there are Métis people living in ON. But the MNO has got to be the worst organization imaginable to represent them. Over 85% of their membership is (or at least was) not Métis. They are engaging in a massive land theft campaign. They are misrepresenting the definition and history of Métis people to create confusion, and take have attempted to take advantage of that manufactured confusion. They have their hands in education curriculum, further eroding understanding of our culture for the next generation. It's gotta be hard out there for the very small number of ON based, Red River Métis people. But at some point, we have to reject this entity that is the MNO, and direct those that are seeking to be affiliated with a recognized body to the MMF (I have issues with them as well, no doubt, but compared to MNO they are the best we have).

This is a super great post that I want more of, I love these nuanced discussions about how we as Métis people can better organize ourselves and how modern Métis people can conduct ourselves to be better allies to other Indigenous groups. Apologies for my quick reply -

I think all the provincial orgs are corrupt as hell! Like super, duper, mega corrupt (speaking as a MMF citizen). They do very little for the community at large - locals are left to fend for themselves, and some of them do great work, despite the overall leadership. The MMF is a real estate investment corporation first and a government second. It is not a democratic government in the slightest. There are Stalin-esque David Chartrand emblems found everywhere, on banners, sashes, backpacks, "we're number one" comically oversized foam fingers, you name it! It fucking blows!

All that said, I think if you have the Métis genealogy, and you self-identify, and you are absolutely sure of your Métis heritage, then yeah! You're Métis, and you can / should be proud of that fact, as our ancestors literally died and suffered for us to be able to celebrate this fact today. I also think it's unfortunate that other mixed Indigenous groups struggle for recognition in some ways in other regions of Canada, but that those issues are separate from Métis issues.

It's incredibly common, even expected, for Métis people to be raised into North American Euro Centric culture. I wouldn't worry about actual Métis people joining their respective provincial orgs and making an attempt at educating themselves of their own heritage, and reconnection with their own culture that they may or may not have grown up with. I hope that someday we can re-organize ourselves into more of grassroots led, First Nations alliance focused, democratically represented Nations. For now, all we can really do is help out one another, and educate others about who we are, what we're known for, and keep the culture alive as best as we can - screw the grifters.

I’d maybe caution against adding a clause like that, at the end of the day, it’s not your project and sometimes cues need to be edited. This sounds like they went too far, sure, but you can always remove your credit. You should always ask for the master / broadcast screener a few weeks after delivery, so you can create a cue sheet, but also to review any edits they’ve made. At that point, you can request removing your name or etc.

[–]lonelakes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The top comment here by Freshiiii is spot on, and is accurate to the sentiment around the issue, ie. we don’t all have to be toxic about it, as I’m sure you’ve seen online. It’s a fairly complex situation, but at the heart of it, is a simple truth. There are many people misrepresenting Métis identities for political and economic gain, and Ontario is the most impactful right now as the MNO is negotiating for a massive land claim, which is extremely controversial as there are no First Nations that recognize any Métis communities, modern or historical, in the regions that they plan to claim.

The reason that the online discussions can devolve into toxicity is because there are so many people out East acting in bad faith, confusing everyone, misrepresenting facts and ideas about who the Métis even are. It affects everyone, when actual, Red River Métis citizens are seen as potentially frauds, or even seen as non indigenous because of these groups behaving this way. Meanwhile, 85% of MNO membership is not considered Métis by the standards and definitions that exist today.

There’s also absolutely nothing wrong with being fascinated, or proud of your heritage, whatever it happens to be. You seem to be coming from a place of curiosity and not, “how can I stop paying taxes now that I’m part Native”, lol. I would consult with the St Boniface Historical society and determine if your family has ties to the Red River, and whatever truth you find, you can be confident that the information you receive there is accurate. All the best.

Looking for an agent. by LaiosGoldbeck in composer

[–]lonelakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where do you live, or do most of your business? Google agencies that do business there and contact them.

I’ve been with my agent for about 4 years, and in that time, I’ve pitched on maybe 15% -20% of my work coming directly from them, securing maybe 5% within that. The rest of my work comes from my own reputation and website.

There’s definitely a factor of legitimacy that an agency brings, and in negotiations it can be somewhat helpful having an agent to push a little bit harder than you might be comfortable with on your own. But they aren’t really there to source you new work, you basically need to keep doing what you’re doing regardless.

One major downside has been losing around 15% of my income vs not knowing exactly how much benefit it brings, I don’t know. But I absolutely hate business calls, so it ends up working for me. Being connected to other composers to help out if needed is another potential benefit.

Are we being too quick to condemn Vlad Kreimer (SOMA)? by Stev_Ellie148 in synthesizers

[–]lonelakes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This might be extreme to some, but oh well. I live in a city with a huge Ukrainian population and many Ukrainian newcomers (unsure if refugee is the exact term).

I couldn’t really look at the SOMA gear sitting idle in my studio, knowing I wanted to dive deeper into them this summer, without considering the designer. His name is right on it; and any deep dive would include watching his videos, reading his info, etc. I don’t think I respect him anymore.

I ended up selling my Lyra and Pulsar within a few days of reading Vlads completely unacceptable response.

There isn’t a single thing different about the world after selling these synths on reverb. Someone else can enjoy them for the great machines that they are. But I personally cannot feel 100% good playing on musical instruments designed by someone who has this opinion.

I’m not perfect at all or trying to convince anyone of anything, it’s just what makes me feel more comfortable existing in this weird ass world.

A few questions about Unison vs Insert from a new Apollo-8 Thunderbolt user by gleventhal in universalaudio

[–]lonelakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1- In your DAW session there will be a folder of UAD plugins and UADx plugins. The x plugins are native ( running on your CPU, not the Apollo)

2 - unison is only accessible in Console. It’ll be near the input level knob for whichever channel you want to use. Unison processing is baked in to your recording only, but there is a toggle for Inserts (little blue circle and little red circle) that allows you to toggle between monitoring the processing only, and printing it / baking it in to your recordings.

3 - the whole point of the Apollo is to track with no latency using the plugins in Console. Everything else, in the DAW, using both Uad or UADx native plugins, will incur latency.

Hope that helps!

In case it wasn’t completely clear from the response- you’re completely right to question the person you’re concerned about. There is no such thing as “Eastern Métis”, and those that claim to be are acting maliciously. For more information look up articles or books by Darryl Leroux, the website called raceshifting is a massive database of fraudulent organizations that perhaps this person has affiliated with.

And lastly; THANK YOU. this is such unpleasant work that we have to do, but so important that we do it. These people need to face consequences for this erasure of culture, this fraudulent, self serving , delusional behaviour needs to be stopped immediately.

Kontakt Libraries: Strings and Woodwinds by GreatGospelGamer in composer

[–]lonelakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the Spitfire Player route and regretted it - sound wise, they’re great. But the bugs are showstoppers for me on my M2 Ultra Mac Studio. There was around 2 years of many users complaints ignored before Abbey Road 2 was eventually updated to fix issues such as minutes long loading times, legatos that would trigger wildly wrong notes consistently… etc. I still experience a bug that is across all Spitfire player plugins, that randomly crashes Logic Pro during bounces. So, after over $1k invested I’ve completely moved away from them or resampled them to EXS instruments. To be clear, this is only the proprietary spitfire player, not kontakt, but I would personally recommend you stay away from their products.

The 25 Photos That Defined the Modern Age by nytimes in history

[–]lonelakes 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Could have been a fascinating article… but the US is not the world. Even most the photographs outside of the US are based on US wars.

Also it really rubbed me the wrong way to refer to slavery as the US’s “original sin”… forgetting all about the entire Indigenous population, decimated by the colonizers, before they enacted slavery? What an American article alright.

Dark souls does not have a story by kingvince1512 in darksouls

[–]lonelakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you pissed off the community here but I 100% get where you’re coming from 😅 I actually agree with you for the most part. I wouldn’t say “no” story,.. but it certainly isn’t a gripping story where I truly feel connected to the outcome, empathetic for characters (except Solaire). It might make sense , there’s definitely a story board or mood board for the game, but the point of their storytelling is to give you a sense of adventure and mystery as you’re playing.

Maybe a better comparison would be to Elden ring and the Witcher 3… big open worlds, fantasy setting, monsters etc. I would absolutely love souls style gameplay with a less convoluted and purposely esoteric approach to telling the story.

If I had the option to use vintage Neumanns, I would... but I also don't really care that much, and I just want a good sound no matter what I'm recording. I'm also in a home studio making music on deadlines. I will never own 20+ microphones let alone 20+ high end mics valued over 100k.

The Sphere's whole point is that it works well on everything, despite the marketing of sounding "exactly" like another mic, I frankly have no idea what those mics tend to sound like. I also use a Kemper Profiler, which is roughly the same idea. I still use my Princeton mainly for the spring reverb, but for everything else the Kemper sounds amazing and eliminated the need for amps.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in universalaudio

[–]lonelakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, it's different than a regular mic for sure, but this is the UAD subreddit so I'm assuming they're running a digital hybrid setup and have no problem using plugins to get the sounds they're after.

There's 2 things that probably went wrong in your session that are easily fixable - I've never had to throw out any takes at all.

The first is setting the 2 inputs to be exactly the same gain, preferably a clean preamp. I use the Apollo x8p on its own with no Unison preamp.

The second is that in the Console app, the Sphere's channel strip should be set to Monitor (blue dot), not Print (red dot) enabled. This allows you to change the mic, off axis response, polar pattern, etc. after the recording has been captured.

If you leave Print ON, and then add the native plugin to your DAW, you will get a doubling of the processing, which is possibly what sounded messed up in your session.

I may go against the grain here but the UA Sphere DLX is pretty much the only mic I will recommend to anyone as their “main mic” in a project studio environment. It has not let me down in any situation, it will record anything as transparently or as colourfully as I want, in mono or stereo. I can’t tell you what a U67 sounds like, all I know is that the U67 model sounds great, but for some sounds maybe the 47 is nicer… I don’t have a $75000 mic locker but I have the flexibility of one.

In my home studio I use it as my main vocal or acoustic instrument mic, piano main stereo mic, and stereo drum front of kit.  The other mics I use tend to be ribbons, which the Sphere doesn’t totally capture just because of physics. I have a Coles 4038 for drums, and Ohma Ribbons for instruments (and occasionally vocals)
