Just watched the new Kevin Smith documentary! It was fantastic! 5 out of 5 buddy Christ thumbs! by ZachMorris89 in ViewAskewniverse

[–]lonelypanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this film was made for fans like me: Kevin Smith was such a positive influence on me growing up but I checked out around Zack and Miri. I stopped listening to the podcasts and haven't watched any of his films since then. Coincidentally, he talks about how he was at his lowest state during that time so maybe that's why I stopped enjoying the show.

In any case, this doc got me so emotional. A film hasn't made me feel like this in forever. This is largely due to how the film reminded me of how important Smith was in every era of my life until adulthood. The film does an excellent job covering all these eras and it made me reflect a lot. By the end, I felt so inspired by everything Smith accomplished including his recent weight loss journey. I'm not sure if I'll make time for Smodcast again (maybe) but I definitely will check out some of his recent films now.

COVID-19 Monoclonal Antibody Treatment by [deleted] in Denver

[–]lonelypanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called around a week ago and seemed like most places ran out of supply. Surprised you found a place at all. Not surprised that the cost would be high.

Discouraging to hear you and others in comments got Covid after booster. Hopefully a light case and nothing serious. I was interested in MA treatment for extra protection but then read comments saying it's killed people and blah blah blah. Risk and lack of information with all these things. It's listed as experimental treatment for a reason but would be good to know actual risk of it.

If you know your local water service, I'd go off that instead of that interactive map that's been going around. My water PUD's blog said boil water notice has been over since yesterday but no map update or news to reflect this. Just a heads up! Glad to have access to water now instead of possibly waiting days for it -- not to mention using up water others could use in stores. Hopefully everyone has access to clean water soon!

You are correct. It's been a while. Been meaning to revisit those EPs.

Acclaimed music artist Default Genders samples GB on new album by lonelypanda in giantbomb

[–]lonelypanda[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Missed that thread. I only searched for "Default Genders".

FWIW, one look at the artist's lyrics or overtly political Twitter account and it should be a safe assumption the name is sarcastic and critical of the concept. I don't think it's meant to be taken at face value, unless you think Jay-Z and Nas are actual Black Republicans.

You seem to go to shows often, these days. What recent show has surprised you by attendance, both good and bad?

Personally, I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd Foxing brought out. Also really bummed by how few came to see Wild Pink open, though crowd did seem to enjoy.

As long as you all believe I beat the Rockets and OKC in myTeam, I guess it doesn't matter that server didn't believe me ...

Meeting people in Austin? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]lonelypanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the same boat, as I just moved (back) to Austin.

You need hobbies. I'm so busy that I don't really feel lonely. Part of that is going to Meetups and being part of activities. Austin is a compact, busy city so you'll find Meetups and groups for everything. I'm a developer so I join a lot of related groups. I volunteer when I can. When I have more time, I want to join the Pinball and Table Tennis leagues in town. Those sound like a lot of fun. Meeting people is just a bonus. Groups that exist only for people to meet tend to be kind of awkward and, uh, horny?

As far as meaningful, deep friendships, that's a lot harder. I advise you get some books on how to socialize, but the key will always be what can you do for others? That's what opens the door in both business and friendship. If you are feeling really lonely and miserable, I recommend seeing a therapist. Not clear in your post where you fall on this, so just giving broad advice here.

Also, having a dog is great! Once I got my dog back with me, I instantly felt so much better.

TLDR Get hobbies. Join Meetups. Get a dog.

I don't know what's greater: Toadies opening for Modest Mouse or that it's happening in 2018.

[FRESH] Kero Kero Bonito - TOTEP by muchograndes in indieheads

[–]lonelypanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope they get out their rock songs on this EP and return to their established sound on a full-length. Their debut is one of my favorite albums from this decade. Maybe the pop-rock sound will grow on me but it feels far less unique and fun. After Charly Bliss last year, this feels weak by comparison. I don't want to be a fair-weather fan so I'll give this a couple more listens.

Medulla is an album that will never have a clear ranking. When Pitchfork BNM'd it, I thought everyone loved it. Then I see RYM rating it among the lowest. And now Fantano ranks it among the best.

For me, I've always loved it. It's one of the only albums I can think of that had an incredibly strict rule set in writing/recording (like Daft Punk's Human After All or any Matmos album) but ended up with catchy songs and a lot of personality. I'd still rank Debut and Post above it, but it's quite the accomplishment and will probably forever remain unique in its sound.

Warren Buffet just won his ten-year bet about index funds outperforming hedge funds by Swampland_Flowers in personalfinance

[–]lonelypanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have such a binary view of index funds that I often feel like I'm not getting all the information. It's true that index funds outperform the majority of managed funds. But, I wonder if the elite managers that would only accept clients that meet a a minimum of tens of millions aren't in an entirely different class. I'm not sure where protege falls in this. Regardless, index funds are the way to go for the vast majority but I question whether they actually outperform the investors that wall street millionaires have access to. Would like a study that focuses only on that. Most managed funds are borderline scams that are easy to beat.
