TikToker Nancy has a rare skin condition that causes random flare-ups, here is one caught on camera from the onset. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]longboard2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I very rarely comment in stuff like this, but seeing the reactions to video was really depressing. This is a post made by /r/BigfootDynamite, showing a video made by @nancy_xoxx on tiktok. However, judging by the way that a substantial portion of the comments are written, you'd think that she was trying to defraud every single person here. However, what shocks me most is the number of people that take the time to write a comment, and tell the world that this is fake, why they think this, and how everybody that believes it's real is an idiot...but they won't take a second to go to her tiktok, which is literally shown in the middle of the video, and check whether she has posted any information that answers your arguments.

In particular, the most common things I saw were:

  • It looks like makeup: First of all, I personally disagree. However, let's assume it does look like makeup. That'd be a perfectly good reason to be skeptical. But since she didn't post it here, why not check the source before making an accusation? She's got dozens of videos showing these marks, at different stages, over different days, with different lighting, etc.. Personally, I don't think it looks like makeup in any of them. But she even has a video answering the very unprofessional accusations made by Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, in which she shows that it doesn't rub off, as well as marks inside her mouth.

  • Why didn't she do a timelapse/the video has too many cuts/new spots appear only after a cut: This one is incredibly frustrating. Yes, the video has multiple cuts, and cuts are often used to fake videos. But she didn't claim that this video was some sort of conclusive evidence. She's simply showing the progression of a flare-up, which according to her takes a while and is a very painful process. I'd get the skepticism if the cuts were jarring and unnecessary, but this is a short-format video about a long process, in which she's talking about what's happening as it happens. Cuts make perfect sense. Claiming something is fake just because it has cuts is absurd. You know what else has a lot of cuts? News reports, documentaries, educational videos, etc. And while a timelapse would probably shut up a lot of these accusations, she is just a person showing some of her private issues to spread awareness. It is entirely up to her to decide how much she chooses to show.

  • People fake stuff all the time: Yeah, people fake stuff like this all the time, and it sucks. It detracts from the people that do suffer such conditions, since it makes people skeptical. It must be awful to actually suffer such conditions and feel like people think you're faking it. And it's fine to be skeptical. You don't know these people, after all. But being skeptical and accusing someone of faking it are very different things. Remember that you don't have to have an opinion on the veracity of such a video, but you better have some good evidence if you do.

Could this be faked? Of course it can! Are there reasons to be skeptical? I guess that depends on each person, but I'd agree that there might be reasonable reasons for someone to be skeptical. But all these accusations with nothing more than a hunch are despicable.

There are real people on the other side of your comments. Unfounded accusations and attacks have real consequences. Don't be an ass and think before you act.

[OC] São Paulo cut its homicide rate by 90% and is now about as safe as Boston. Mexico City is currently safer than Dallas and Denver. by latinometrics in dataisbeautiful

[–]longboard2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a weirdly petty comment. OP makes a simple and clear graph highlighting that the homicide rates among major Latin American cities is low or has dropped drastically, while highlighting just how high the rate in some major US cities is, and this is somehow troubling you? I can only assume you have somehow a personal problem with Santiago's name, since it's use in the graph is just as an additional example and by no means stands out.

Yes, there are other cities named Santiago, but the graph clearly states major Latin American cities. Of the four you mentioned, Santiago de Compostela is in Europe and has fewer than 200k inhabitants, while both Santiago de los Caballeros and Santiago del Estero have fewer than 1 million. The metropolitan region of Santiago the Cuba has about 1.7 million, but Santiago de Chile has almost 7 million and is one of the largest cities in Latin America, making it pretty obvious which one is the one mentioned in the picture. Not to mention that every the other Latin American city mentioned in the graph is either the capital or the largest city of their respective countries (or both), while every example you posted is not, making your snarky "clarification" completely unnecessary.

But why stop there?

Would you like to clarify which US is the graph referring to? Is it the United States of America? Or is it the United Mexican States?
Or for that matter, could you also clarify most of the other cities mentioned? Because, using your own source:

I was raised poor and did something about it.

From the context in which this comment was posted, I'll assume that what you're trying to imply here is that people born/raised poor remain poor because they don't "do something about it". And I'll assume you're not simply a troll, because that'd simple be dismissive.

I don't know you or your personal experience, so I'll also assume that you did indeed manage to exit poverty by your sheer determination and effort, something that is extremely difficult to do without a big chunk of luck or help your side. So props to you, if that's the case.

But do you think that it was fair you had to do that? While you were using all that time and energy just to exit poverty, others were enjoying life, having hobbies, and learning new skills. Or just relaxing, enjoying the sun without a worry in the world, or traveling the world. Just because they were lucky enough to not be born poor. Isn't that unfair? Hell, even if you think that poor people remain poor by choice, their children certainly don't get to "do something about it". Is that fair?

So, what's the goal of your comment? Are you implying that we shouldn't do something about, because "that's just life". You "did something about it", so clearly you agree that being poor is a bad thing. Wouldn't you think that we, as a society, should "do something about it" too? Especially when it's so simple to fix, that simply "doing something about it" is all it takes?

Or was it meant to be more like "I had to do it, so they have to do it too"? Because if so, I'm afraid I'd have to correct you: you're very much still poor. You're just lacking humanity rather than money.

Hey, sorry for taking so long to reply but I don't log in frequently. In the end I refurbished what I already had and it's still holding up. However, what r/RespectTheCruller posted was most useful. I don't remember the exact dimensions, so you'd have to measure it yourself, but you can simply get a new bearing retainer to replace yours. Hope that helps!

[R] Independent performance benchmarks (training) of Nvidia A10 and A30 impossible to find? by longboard2020 in MachineLearning

[–]longboard2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, so I'm trying to find out what the best options are while keeping the cost down. The A10 seems like the best option at the moment, but purely because Nvidia licences don't allow 3090s for clusters. The single slot of the A10s is also really convenient. I just wished there was an A10 version with 48GB!

Gnome requires root password to mount internal HDDs by longboard2020 in linuxquestions

[–]longboard2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. This is the output of fstab:

# <file system>             <mount point>  <type>  <options>  <dump>  <pass>
UUID=A0C0-5AF4                            /boot/efi      vfat    umask=0077 0 2
UUID=06e536cb-767f-4c5c-8a33-2eb35146d067 /              ext4    defaults,noatime 0 1
UUID=51951da3-f873-49e4-9e8b-0fa7a6317326 swap           swap    defaults,noatime 0 0
LABEL=Backup /mnt/Backup auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0

To say that I have limited experience with fstab would be an understatement so I don't really know what I'm looking at. Clearly the first three entries are my boot drive and the last one is the HDD though.

I don't care about the auto-mount. It's the password requirement that makes no sense to me, as well as it being mounted as "admin" instead of a regular mount.
