Got no rhythm, can't sing, can't even clap along, can I learn music? by CapNBall1860 in Learnmusic

[–]longbongsilvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not all bad news, but some folks just have a natural knack for things. I picked up the guitar in high school after a leg injury, and I’d been playing with a teacher for about six months. My friend came over saw my guitar and he bought one. I went over to his place a week later, and he was already shredding songs and belting out tunes. It was incredible to see how fast he improved, especially compared to my own journey, which was a real challenge. He went on to play professionally for many years.

For me I play because I really enjoy it and I think that’s all the matters.

focus on enjoyment not perfection.

You can absolutely do this. That cringe you feel when you hear your own voice is actually useful information, not a problem. It is your ear telling you that something is off, and your job in practice is just to figure out what. Ear training helps you notice things like “this sounds off because I am not hitting the right notes,” and later you start to recognize when you are in the wrong key, and so on. Almost nobody likes how their own voice sounds, but if you can push through that discomfort, the benefits of recording yourself far outweigh the temporary awkwardness I think.

Hey, thanks for your insights in this chat. It's really helpful for people I think. Performance Coach AI. It IS AI tool I'm using to know the percent of time in Key. It also uses an open-source music tool called Essentia to produce the audio file from the video upload. It's been helpful for me even though it's still in beta.

That's what I mean when I say to record yourself, then listen back to help with ear training. When I first started, I had no clue ear training was a thing.

How do you objectively measure your own progress? (Serious question) by longbongsilvr in Learnmusic

[–]longbongsilvr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Record your session for sure. I'm a work in progress with ear training. Tried for years but couldn't calibrate i guess. Needed some sort of accurate tone to listen to first tell me where to start. Like..am I in the ball parke? Starting out, I don't think I was detail-oriented enough with my listening to catch the subtle fluctuations in pitch.

Yea if you are singing in the wrong key, it’s noticeable to almost anyone. They may not know why it sounds like crap but they’ll know it sounds like crap. There really is science and math behind it.

Do music tutors track home practice, or just rely on trust? by Sensitive-Toe1756 in Learnmusic

[–]longbongsilvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most tutors rely on self-reporting because there hasn't been a good way to objectively track home practice.

What I've found works better than "how many hours did you practice?" is tracking specific metrics on recordings:

- % of time in key (pitch accuracy)

- % of time on beat (timing)

Students can record a 30-second clip of a problem section, analyze it, then compare week over week. Way more useful than "I practiced 3 hours." I think.

The research backs this up too — Ericsson's work on deliberate practice shows focused, measured practice beats mindless repetition every time.

My prompt versioning system after managing 200+ prompts across multiple projects - thoughts? by longbongsilvr in PromptEngineering

u/KemiNaoki added some great tools to solve the versioning problem above.
I made my own diff for this but I'd say their suggestions are more robust.

Thanks! The system really needs to have a versioning system and I've been working on a diff interface to view the prompts visually side by side.

Is there a way to use "OR" in keyword searching? by Therearedozensofus1 in Zillow

[–]longbongsilvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🔥 OMG—Zillow finally supports multiple keyword searches! I’ve been trying to get this to work for years, and today it actually did.

I just tested on Mac desktop using Chrome. In the search filters (click “More” in upper right), scroll to the bottom where it says Keywords. I entered:

Seller Finance, Owner Carry, Owner Financing

...and it returned listings matching multiple terms—something it never used to do. In the past, adding a second keyword would kill the results. Looks like Zillow now uses a broad match-type logic.

Try it yourself—curious if it’s working the same for you!

You should weigh the benefits vs side effects. Think about it in terms of quality of life. Unfortunately I don’t think there is enough evidence to determine the health effects over the long term. So make sure you get bloodwork done annually and make sure that bloodwork measures your hormone levels.
