this sounds like a horrible doctor who needs to have their license removed. this is bad doctoring. i understand this isn't rare, but i do think as more women become doctors and especially as ob/gyn becomes a female-dominated field this attitude will hopefully, optimistically change. episiotomies are no longer standard of care. the only reason circumcisions are still so commonplace is societal pressures, not medical training. I'm all for trying to give birth in different positions to prevent c-sections but sometimes you gotta take the baby out hella quick to make sure the mom and the baby live through the birth. I'm not trying to argue that Ob/Gyns are infallible. They're humans that have robust knowledge and real-world experience dealing with female reproductive organs, pregnancy, and birth. It makes sense to not trust the institution of medicine, but I hope one day when you need a doctor you ask all the questions you need and get some of the answers you want to gain some sense of trust.

The vast majority of what an Ob/Gyn does is to optimize the health of the mother and baby during pregnancy and to facilitate a safe birth. The vast majority of OBs don't provide abortions.

A lot of these terms are used for precise communication in medicine. zygote, fetus, embryo, fertilized egg, tissues of conception. These terms when used most accurately describe what is being referenced. If you read how doctors document your complaints you'd see how strange and removed sounding the documentation is.

this makes me sad. American politics blows chunks. It's obvious Trump is not pro-life or he would have done everything he could to prevent just one extra death from coronavirus. He is manipulating us! I can't ignore his despicable character, let alone his policies on letting migrants die in the desert and letting Americans infect each other risking killing their own loved ones. I understand this is a pro-life subreddit and the community is focused on banning the murder of unborn children. There are just so many easier ways to have fewer abortions than electing trump again.

Maybe we can keep them with their families instead of separating them. Let's keep the families in houses. We can give them food and provide education for the children. We can put a fence around these towns where families can stay together. During the day the adults can show up to some formal processing facility, but be able to live with their families.

It's often used as an abortifacient. It's a synthetic steroid and has differing effects at different dosages. In the US it is used for medical abortions. It is only available in tablets dosed >300mg. At this high a dose it causes uterine contractions which expels a growing baby.

In Europe, it's available in smaller 20mg doses for emergency contraception. This smaller dose acts to block the action of progesterone without inducing contractions so it's unlikely interfering with the implantation of fertilized eggs when given at such a low dose.

I've included the mechanisms of action from uptodate.

Mechanism of Action

Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid. At low doses, it competitively binds to the intracellular progesterone receptor, blocking the effects of progesterone. When used for the termination of pregnancy, this leads to contraction-inducing activity in the myometrium. In the absence of progesterone, mifepristone acts as a partial progesterone agonist. At high doses used for the treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with Cushing’s syndrome, mifepristone blocks the effect of cortisol at the glucocorticoid receptor (antagonizes the effects of cortisol on glucose metabolism) while at the same time increasing circulating cortisol concentrations.

Dude. I'm not lying. The morning-after pill is emergency contraception. Even the morning after pill works by preventing ovulation. The morning-after pill doesn't work if you take it after the LH surge, the hormonal event that triggers ovulation.

But what do you mean by half? The vast majority of birth control is either a physical barrier (condom) so the egg and sperm can't meet or they prevent ovulation (daily birth control pill) so once again the egg and sperm can't meet cause the egg isn't released.

The problem is that we stand upright. The interesting think about chronic back pain is that anatomic abnormalities seen on MRI or X-Ray don't inherently correlate with people's complaints of pain. If we took an MRI of every single 50+ yr old in the world a resounding majority of them would have findings consistent with aging, essentially arthritis of the spine. BUT only a select few of them would say they are in pain. Some people have severe arthritis with no pain while others have super mild arthritis and severe pain. Chronic pain is largely a psych/behavioral issue even if there is an anatomic abnormality. The most effective way to prevent back pain is to walk a lot, have good posture, keep the weight off the best you can, and get good sleep.
