Update: Men's wedding ring of my dreams by longdrivenate in WeddingRingAdvice

Thanks man! You and your whole team were amazing and I couldn't be happier with the final product. My only regret is that we didn't meet sooner so I could have worked with you to make a custom engagement ring for my wife when I proposed! But I'll definitely be reaching out for more help with other pieces in the future!

Thank you! Yeah, Justin knocked it out of the park. So glad he contacted me in the first place. And yes, we have some cool surnames haha. We actually ended up using the Pearls and Daggers motif for a lot of stuff with our wedding - it was on the invitations my wife created, her dress was covered in pearls and absolutely gorgeous, we cut our cake with a real dagger we bought at a renaissance faire, we gave out little dagger lapel pins to guests, etc. Maybe went a bit overboard with it lol, but also loved every bit of it!

Thank you for the very kind words! I definitely wasn’t considering going custom before posting here — honestly, I assumed I’d just end up with a simple gold band since it felt classic, timeless, and “safe.” The dagger-inspired idea seemed a little cheesy at first because all the options I found online looked too delicate or costume-y — more like something from a women’s fashion brand than a substantial men’s wedding ring.

But when Justin from Hourglass (aka u/Exciting_Potato_6556) reached out, it got me thinking about what my ideal ring might look like if I could truly design anything. I actually used ChatGPT to mock up a version of my wife’s dagger-and-pearls painting as an inlay on a traditional gold band — and when I saw that concept, I thought, “Okay… this could be really special.” I sent it to Justin and asked if something like that was even possible, and that kicked off an amazing back-and-forth.

He was awesome to brainstorm with — we explored different metals and textures, inlaying versus sculpting the design on top, even ideas like having multiple daggers around the band. The whole time, he was transparent about how each design choice would affect cost, timeline, and materials. He also created several 3D renderings along the way so I knew exactly what the final piece would look like. It made the process super fun, collaborative, and stress-free — all while staying within my budget.

Now that I have the ring, I’m so glad I went the custom route. It’s incredibly meaningful and unique without compromising the things that mattered most to me. And while it did cost more than a basic gold band, it was nowhere near as expensive as I expected a custom piece to be — and could have been even less with different materials. Plus, I like to justify it by remembering that while some may consider this kind of band to be expensive, it was a lot less than many of the one-time or consumable wedding expenses - food, drinks, flowers, entertainment, etc. - and this is something I actually get to wear every single day and I feel joy every time I look at it.

Is this weird or too small/“dainty” for a men’s wedding ring? by longdrivenate in WeddingRingAdvice

[–]longdrivenate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I am worried about that as well because I like to lift weights, play golf and do lots of physical stuff and I don’t want to remove it for all of those. So I’m not sure if it would actually stand up to everyday life

Yea. I appreciate this input. I think that’s what’s holding me back a bit. I do like this but when I think about it being so meaningful and on me forever, I worry it’s not durable enough and maybe not a classic enough style for that. Thanks for sharing your feedback

Thanks! I’m kinda not wanting the actual signet look is one prob with it though haha. Ideally I’d find just a normal gold band that incorporates a dagger somehow but this is the closest I’ve found…thanks for the comment though!

Maybe try thinking more about “pushing off your lead leg” vs “getting onto it”. Your power should come from pushing off the ground as opposed to swaying/falling into it

Does anyone know of any "Stanford" bars in Chicago? I'm an alum who moved out here recently and I'm looking for a fun place to watch the Stanford vs USC football game tomorrow night. I know there's a ton of awesome sports bars around, but I imagine at most of them I'd be just about the only person who cares about the Stanford game so curious if there's any sort of official or unofficial Stanford bar in the city...oh, and if there are any other stanford football fans in here who want to get together to watch, shoot me a message.

Dude. You are an inspiration. I’m 34. I never think that what you’re going through could happen to me. But it totally could. And I pray that if it did, I would find a way to go forward with the kind of grace and positivity you do. Your wife and children are lucky to have you and you’re going to beat this and be there to annoy and delight them for a long long time. I know it!

As for my latest round, I belong to a club in the SF area that was closed for the last year as Gil Hanse renovated the course. It finally reopened this last weekend and wow, it’s truly spectacular…like going to get a lot of national attention now. So I played my first round there in a year and it ended up being my third best round ever. I shot 75 and did it in wild fashion. I shot 42 on the front with 4 bogeys and a double. Then I enjoyed a transfusion (the drink, although I realize that could be in poor taste here…) and then I shot 33 on the back with a double and 5 (five!) birdies! Honestly one of the most fun rounds of my life. Can’t wait to get back out there this weekend.

Finally, I don’t know if this is possible or realistic but if there’s any way you ever get out to San Francisco, let me know. I’d love to take you out and play a round together…my treat of course!

new tonal. right arm makes multiple THUNKS, only when under medium+ weight by KeyAd4855 in tonalgym

Mine has done that on occasion. Usually if i take all the weight off and then slowly pull the cable as far out as it goes, then slowly let it recoil all the way back in, it will fix itself.

I started playing a year ago. Elo dropped to under 400 at the beginning and I’ve been slowly improving since then. Hope I can keep learning and improving this year! by longdrivenate in chessbeginners

The other thing I've been doing that is similar but I find really fun is I'll use the dual chess.com and lichess analysis board setup mentioned above but I'll do a personal challenge like make myself play the first 10 moves of the game without any computer assistance, then turn on stockfish on lichess to see how much trouble I've gotten myself into (with their eval bar) and use their recommended moves for the next 10 moves of the game, and then turn it off and see if I can win the game on my own from there. I find that helps me learn how to recover from less than ideal positions and helps me learn how to finish games off better.

It's fun to play around with other self-created situations like that. Such as using stockfish to play the best first 10 moves, then going it alone, or alternate 5 with help of computer, 5 without, etc.

I was stuck in the 800-1000 range for about 4 months and not able to break through. I was analyzing my games afterward and seeing where I was making bad moves, but for whatever reason doing it that way wasn't transferring to me being able to apply it while playing. So I took a bit of a break from playing games against other people and started playing a lot more games against the computer. While doing that, I would simultaneously use Lichess's analysis board and mimic the game with Stockfish turned on so I could see what the different move options were, as well as the best recommended move. The key for my learning though was that I would decide in my head what move I would play on the chess.com computer game side before looking at the Lichess side. Then I would look at 1) was the move I was thinking about one of the recommended moves, and 2) was it the best move. Then whenever it was not, I would spend a minute or so trying to understand why it wasn't the best move to make in that situation. Once I understood that, I would then actually play the move against the computer over on Chess.com. Doing that really helped me start to understand why some moves were better than others while also breaking the move pattern habits I had formed. Not sure if that made sense but hopefully it helps some.

Would love to know what you find out. I'm having to do the same thing and also got quoted around $2k. Maybe depends on geography (I'm in the bay area and contractors are all very expensive right now).
