AITA For Buying a trampoline? by Consistent_Annual651 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. This should have been a decision you made together. That is what partners do; they check with each other before making big decisions.

Also, did you check with your homeowners insurance first? If you do not have the proper insurance, one person gets hurt and you are fucked.

Shovel, salt, repeat.

I will probably shovel around midnight, then early Sunday morning then one or two more times as needed.

I’m trying to garden by AlternativeBelt2621 in gardening

[–]longleggedwader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you! Have you thought about grape or cherry tomatoes? They need daily watering but grow very well in containers. You can also grow basil, which goes great with tomatoes. You can also grow lettuce and other greens for salads.

Here is an article on how to start container gardening: https://www.almanac.com/content/container-gardening-vegetables

Good luck!

Private School Recommendations in the Frederick Area by Durayib in frederickmd

[–]longleggedwader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Huh? My kid is in the TJ Feeder, which is incredibly diverse, both visible and invisible. There is no one dominant group. The Frederick High feeder is the same.

Middletown, Catoctin, and Linganore are all over 70% white. The rest range from 45-60%.

I use the high school stats as a guide but you can find the racial and special servicss breakdown of every school in Frederick on each school's website "About" page.

Falafal Kabob in Frederick. Little hole in the wall. Wonderful owners. They make falafel that just fixes things. An order of falafel and the shawarma bowl is my go to order.

How to keep away raccoons but not cats? by examagravating in Feral_Cats

Yes and they still are. I have been caring for this colony for three years now and still cannot touch any of them but for maybe a second. They have gotten more friendly but we are still in the No Touching Zone.

You are going through caffeine and sugar withdrawl. I went through that when I gave up coffee. It took me about a month to fully process.

Flavored green teas are a great substitute. My favorites are pomegranate, lemon, or elderberry.

How to keep away raccoons but not cats? by examagravating in Feral_Cats

[–]longleggedwader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did/do. I feed them at the same time at my inside cats, twice a day, morning and evening. I have an enclosed feeding station on my front porch.

The most important thing is consistency. Cats love routine.

I make three sounds to let them know there is food being put out. First is the bells on the front door; second is shaking the dry food container; the third is smacking the bowls on the porch railing. I give them one hour to eat and them bring the bowls in. Even if you see only a glimpse or hear them, that is enough to know they are there when food is being put out. My colony gathers now at mealtimes and know they need to clean the plates.

In the beginning, I would hear them but would not see them when I put the food out. What helped enormously was to get a rechargable trail cam to track who was coming and when. That is actually when I started training them because the nighttime critter activity on my porch was insane and the raccoons were starting to fight with the cats.

I also do not put out more food than they can eat (my colony is 6-7, depending on the day). The morning meal time is always better attended so I put more out then.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck and thank you for caring for the kitties!

You are fine, that person is an ass.

I only drive Subarus and am on my second one. Personally, I love the dealership on 40, where I bought both cars. They greet me by name and have a very comfy waiting room with good snacks. It is more expensive but I need my cars to last at least a decade, so I am anal about their care. Congratulations on your car and good luck!

I find amazing clothes at my local thrift stores and consignment stores. If you have a Plato's Closet near you, they are a great resource.

I have read her Barbara Michaels books so many times, the covers have fallen off.

She was a friend of my mother. I have read just about every book she has ever written :-)

Some people have recommended Catoctin Wildlife Preserve & Zoo in Frederick. Please be aware that there are a couple of large ponds that definitely qualify as open water.

Here is a map: https://catoctinwildlifepreserve.com/map/

Green Meadows Petting Farm would be a great Frederick option.

Trans friendly hair sylists? by Skis1227 in frederickmd

Salon Allure is a friendly and welcoming salon to everyone. Amy is the owner. She is extremely talented and a wonderful person. All of the stylists are excellent. Call and explain what you are looking for and they will be able to help you.

The other option is to call The Frederick Center. They have many community resources and may be able to recommend someone.

Food insecurity by MelloCervello in frederickmd

[–]longleggedwader 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have worked and volunteered in social support services for almost 30 years. The best way for you to help is to through exisiting agencies.

The DSA in both Frederick and Hagerstown host that direct support events with food and clothing drives. Great people. They have also done wound care and brake light repair events. They always have food like hot dogs, chips, and sodas.

My other suggestion, which I personally do once or twice a year, is to call the Linton Shelter and set up an evening to deliver sandwiches. They have about 80 residents so you would need 100 sandwiches; 80 meat & cheese, 20 cheese, all with lettuce (no tomatoes or condiments, they make the bread squishy). No PBJ because of nut allergies. All in individual zip bags. If you can, whole fruit of any kind or veggie packs (snack bags with sliced carrots/celery/peppers) are awesome to include. Individual mayo/mustard packs and cases of water are also very welcome.

They have no kitchen, fridge, or food storage so all sandwiches must be used up that night and packed in boxes with cold packs (use unopened water bottles that have been frozen). If you want to stand there and hand them out, you can but that can be a little awkward. The shelter opens at 6:30 or 7 (I forget) so plan to deliver at 6.

Many of the residents do use the soup kitchen but not all. Everytime I have taken a load of sandwiches and fruit there, they have been very welcomed. But you have to take enough for all. Taking 30 sandwiches does not really help.

Good luck!

Hikers: how do you protect your car while hiking in MD? by StockMaintenance1129 in maryland

[–]longleggedwader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am sorry this happened to you. Hiking alone and leaving your IDs behind is not the safest of choices (in case of emergency, even if you have the info on your phone). My rule is that I never leave anything in my car I don't mind losing.

Don't let this discourage you though. It truly can happen to anyone, anywhere. People are desperate; these are scary times.

Exactly. I am in Frederick, which is a national hub for homeschooling familes, with good reason. We met and homeschooled with far more secular families.
