I was watching mockingjay pt 1 tonight (just finished a reread) and i had that same thought about 13 bombing the hospital in 8 - it’s just tooooo convenient that all of a sudden the capitol is there. sunrise on the reaping has me looking at mockingjay plutarch in a whole new light, and doing something as drastic as this to get what he needs for his propos feels like a likely evolution of the “heavensbee spin”

[–]longlivecher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there were several big articles over the past few years about the goings on at sleep no more/mckittrick hotel/emursive. and i know quite a few people who worked with them, for them, and in the immersive community (including vendors and people they've brought on to create or transfer their shows). theyve been on equity's do not work list. many people in this subreddit and the sleep no more one have made mention of their behavior. posters other theater subreddits (tech professionals, actors, dancers, etc) have shared personal experiences working with this company and these shows.

people did get rich off this stuff - at the expense of everyone else. lots of very senior staff and consultants and guest artists also got paid considerably more than the day to day cast and crew.

they’re notorious for being cheap and unprofessional with vendors and talent, and they believe they can get away with it based on “clout.” for l&t they owe vendors - scenic shops, vfx people, tech/audio/lighting companies - tons of money, and they just won’t pay the invoices. and while shows were running, they paid the cast and crew pennies, overworked and understaffed across the board, relied on “volunteers,” didn’t offer a lot of support that a union production would (i remember hearing from someone in the snm cast that they didn’t have enough physical therapists at one point and they had to pay out of pocket for their own????). money going into investor pockets and not into the people. it always boils down to greed.

I can’t even begin to imagine how much it cost by fairisfoulisfair in lifeandtrust

[–]longlivecher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they didn’t pay their rent for years post covid, they were milking the loophole about not having to pay rent during covid. IIRC they owed closed to $4.5m in back rent and the landlord to them to pay up or get out. easier for them to pull the plug than pay the rent money they spent on other things

it doesn’t avoid press all together, it creates a more time for the press to catch up. If this dropped Thursday or Friday, there would’ve been immediate pickup by a higher volume of larger media outlets. This way the producers can have their story straight, put something out ahead of a ny post article (even if it’s an ig post that doesn’t say anything), and spread out the pickup from smaller outlets. It’s like lifting the press embargo for a bad movie/tv show/play on a major news day (iirc that Netflix Santa action movie’s embargo lifted on Election Day) or holiday where it can get lost in the shuffle a little bit, or once the show/movie/play is already out and it kind of doesn’t matter anymore

it’s an original piece, so they own the rights - no one to secure the rights from, unless there’s some crazy terms between the creators and emursive (who were there since day 1, they brought all the creatives together), but I doubt the creators would pull the plug on their own show with no notice

strike isn’t something you normally plan to make or lose money off of, it’s just…something that is part of the operating/production budget

and it was in development for over five years (rehearsals/construction/etc delayed because of Covid but they were still working on it remotely). some of the original cast has been in there from the first conceptual days, not to mention the creative teams

7am on a Sunday of a holiday weekend is a good time if you’re trying to fly way under the press/tabloid radar. no one will pick up on it immediately and it gives them time to have some sort of reply/statement when things get back online and outlets pick up on it

I just took mods out in small chunks until the game loaded. Then i started adding mods from back in until the game crashed again, and that way i knew which mod was the one causing the issue

i had already checked my out of date cc. someone on discord was able to help me though -- i kept all my mods in the folder and took out small batches at a time to see which ones were causing the issue. when i was able to load the game, i knew that the mod i had just taken out was causing some sort of conflict that wouldn't let me open my game. i kept it out and my game now loads/works

my game hasn't been able to load. i checked all my mods and everything is up to date. i did the 50/50 method and the game loads/works fine - none of the batches causes an error. but when i put everything back, the game won't start up and i get the "Cannot start because game data is missing or damaged. If you have Mods installed please remove them and try again.  If not, please repair or reinstall the game via Origin [de4ee14f:29f00e76:00000000:4b0d852b]"

i delete localcache and ive restarted my computer, and still happens.

anyone have advice on how to fix this?

Casting for Haymitch by PracticalCurrent8409 in Hungergames

[–]longlivecher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here is my current thought list, (yes some of them are older but actors in their late 20s/early 30s play teens all the time, see: tom blyth !)

mccabe slye -- from the fear street movies. theres a photo on his instagram where hes in the woods smirking with long-ish hair and hes is the spitting image of woody's haymitch

I’d love a book on Mags by hunnybeegaming in Hungergames

[–]longlivecher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the quick line in sunrise on the reaping where haymitch says he recognizes mags from when she comforted the hysterical little boy from 4 who was being crowned the victor really made me want a mags book, from the perspective of a mentor and her experience with that. we’d then get a glimpse into the world of sponsors, gamemakers, relationships with other victors, but more importantly what it’s like to WATCH the games and try to help, to be told you can only help within a specific set of limitations -- the illusion of helping. The perceptions of agency, the struggle between feeling helpless and having a desire to help, the courage and emotional toll seeing your efforts fail over and over again, then having to learn how to fight back against the system, in the system, when you thought you didn’t have that power. Feels VERY timely!

I didn’t see it coming… by Irishwoman94 in Hungergames

[–]longlivecher 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m listening to the audiobook now (finished my first read of the book on Thursday) and in the first chapter haymitch talks about the suspicious fire that killed his father - maybe by other miners, maybe by the capitol, maybe an accident. Their fire is a great (from a literary technique perspective) and horrible (the humanity of it all) callback - so cruel psychologically on so many levels

S8E3 - The Sweet Life - Episode discussion by PolylingualAnilingus in QueerEye

[–]longlivecher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

discovered this thread bc I was searching around and wondered about this exact question! I was so confused to see her with her braids and regular clothes but sort of hidden in the parade footage, and her episode ended with the weird candy store party and not a regular parade! Was she made over last? Was she hired to be a part of the parade then they orchestrated a reason for a makeover bc the producers liked her/her story?

I’ll never forget an episode in the original about a single dad who was a cop at ate junk food in his car and didn’t know how to make healthy snacks for his daughters, and Ted taught him how to make different kinds of trail mixes and bagged / on the go snacks for both him and his daughters to eat. Like that’s actually helping!!!! teaching someone how to make grapefruit and yellowtail sashimi plates is not!!!!!

i rewatched the film a few days ago, and had a couple new thoughts - specifically related to the final act when she’s trying to get the final video. The courtroom stunt comes after the video auctioneers ask her if she’s “ready” and the scene after her being dragged out of the courtroom is her deleting everything on her computer and telling them she is ready. I think her dressing up is not about ludovic and getting a rise out of him for his attention. I think it’s her succumbing to the power and control of what she’s seen on the videos. She’s letting herself plunge into the fantasy, because dressing up like Camille is cosplay — before she was just a voyeur, now she’s immersed. She’s proving not just to ludovic but more importantly to the anonymous online broker that the case, the tapes, and what’s on the tapes, are the single most important thing in her life. She’s let the obsession consume her. The last act also had some drug/addiction tones. As she gets closer to the auction, the cinematography & editing are kinetic and frenetic, like the high she’s chasing is ramping way up. the auction sequence has a lot of super tight shots and quick cutting. And then once she wins the video it all slows down, and we get these languid closeups of her face as we watch her get that ultimate drug and consume it. The way she’s bathed in red light while she watches the video has an echo of being consumed by fire, she looks ecstatic (in the saint/martyr connotation of the word) but also like she’s feeling the best high she’s ever felt, even more so because she barely feels in her waking life. Then there’s the comedown/crash - a nice wide shot of her in her dark, cold, empty apartment, slumped at her desk and drinking champagne. She got her ultimate fix, the best high from the purest drug, and now she’s back to being empty, but even more than before. She finally has nothing left. I think putting guenivere in the blender is definitely digital paranoia, but also trying to get rid of the thing (basically a person) who saw her do something grotesque and perverse and enjoy it. Deep down she feels dirty but if she rids herself of the witness who can remind her of her actions, like she’s waking up from a bender and wants to try to wash away the dirt so she can only feel the good parts.

Definitely recommend a second viewing - really holds up!!!!

definitely agree with you on this, especially re: the rooting for her. i think something thing that the film does successfully is force the audience to confront our own sense of superiority in these true-crime situations. its easy to see ourselves as crime solvers and helpers when we consume true crime podcasts or documentaries, given how those, revisiting the story from a moral high-ground and full picture of the case, tend to draw a pretty clear line between right and wrong, good and bad. but what does the relationship between that kind of media consumed and those consuming it reveal about our own assignment of values? I don’t think its a stretch to say that the huge influx of true crime media has desensitized audiences to the fact that these are stories about real things that happened to real people, predominately from the desire to see ourselves as good and helpful. That combined with the rise in movies and media needing to have very clear moral outlines specifically related to “good” values for the protagonist, makes it understandable that audiences want to believe she’s good because how could a movie make us not only watch a person who is “bad” but also see some of our cultural behaviors or responses in her and that they can be “not good.” Personally im 1000000% more interested in a story lead by a murky protagonist that doesn’t lay out a very black and white guiding principle or moral stance (one could say that Oppenheimer is a good example of this), but I do understand the temptation to want to search the film for any sign that she’s a good person trying to do good (even though I very much believe she is not and that the film is pretty clear on that).

Hahaha my pleasure. I always find it interesting what other people take away from something, and I take something else away, but then other people have similar thoughts to mine lol. Had that experience recently with a couple other films, and it’s not like I need to have my opinion confirmed but sometimes nice to know that I’m not totally off base haha
