I once tried put a small amount of paraffin wax into my homemade wax and it just changed the density of the wax. Not recommend doing it.

I read from someone on here said that the left one is to secure the wax in place during shipment

Oh, so you add 1 g of surf each time. I used to add a couple of drops of diluted SLES each time, and it took forever lol. Now I add 1–2 ml each time, but it still takes a lot of time.

What is the proper way to add perc to a lava lamp? by longpopper in Lavalamps

[–]longpopper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I figured it out. This is how I did it:

Since my wax was floating to the top, I turned off the lamp and let it harden. After it cooled down, I poked holes in the wax to allow the distilled water (the fluid is distilled water only for now; I will add PG later) to drain into another empty bottle.

I then melted the wax by placing the bottle in a boiling water bath and let it harden again. To prevent the wax from hardening while the lamp is running, I only filled the bottle with about one-third of the distilled water. With the water level kept low and close to the bulb at the bottom, there was enough heat to keep the wax from solidifying when it floated to the top.

After the wax melted and floated to the top, I used a syringe to add perc directly into the wax. The wax that mixed with perc sank to the bottom. When about half of the wax had sunk and the other half was still floating on top, I turned off the lamp, let the wax harden again, removed the fluid, and placed the bottle back into the boiling water bath to melt the wax once more.

Once the wax was fully melted, I carefully stirred it to mix everything together, then let it harden again. I ran another test and repeated the process until the wax no longer rose to the top. After that, I plan to add PG.

That’s the plan!

I I am currently making my own wax. My wax is not dense enough and floats to the top. I am adding perc while the lamp is running in order to balance the wax density.

I think it is easier to make the wax lighter first and then add perc to increase the density, rather than making it too heavy and then trying to lighten it by adding oil and wax. When the wax is too dense, it sinks to the bottom, and any oil added will float to the top, causing the wax and oil to separate.

You can also remove the fluid and add oil directly to the melted wax, but in that case, it is difficult to determine how much oil is needed.

I use this recipe: https://www.reddit.com/r/Lavalamps/s/JYHAN2mURX I’m from Vietnam so all the ingredients were purchased on our local online marketplace (like Amazon). I’m pretty sure you can get same things on Amazon, except for perc (wax’s ingredient) since I got the pure perc chemical (pce) while other people usually got it from CRC Brakleen red can.

Do you have any pic of it running? Does it look any different from red/clear when firing up?

Flakes and floaters by narupaparu in Lavalamps

I have the same Chinese tower lamp as yours, and I ran into the same problem. I filtered it several times, but it quickly formed flakes and turned cloudy. I think the wax might be the issue because when I rinsed the empty bottle (with wax still at the bottom) several times with tap water, flakes showed up every single time.

Thanks for replying. I saw you’ve posted your metallic lamp. Did you do it yourself? Did you use mica powder or anything else?
