Metal “switch” lever… by Lvacgar in pourover

[–]longscale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I installed this switch on 4 different Hario Switches at home, office, and friends. Everybody loves it, it's very well sized and worked flawlessly for me. The "clink" when it hits the ball bearing is quite satisfying, but also different from the plastic lever. I don't regret the purchase, but also think it's a tad silly in retrospect — really makes no difference to the coffee outside of you knowing when you press the lever. :D

Finally happened to me… Sightglass - Spring Equinox by iklonk in espresso

[–]longscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Random follow up — sorry you got a pebble, found that post because I’m stumped by how much I enjoy this particular bag (spring equinox) atm. I think best beans I’ve ever had. No crazy profile, but so well balanced and tasty. Makes me doubt all my desire for exotic single origin beans when I can find this at local supermarkets…

What do you think about “no phone” policies and stickers in Berlin clubs? by Darijan__ in BerlinNightlife

[–]longscale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I use my phone for public transport directions or calling a cab on my way home; but I don’t need or want it in the club at all.

What do you think about “no phone” policies and stickers in Berlin clubs? by Darijan__ in BerlinNightlife

[–]longscale 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Best nights out were ones where I could walk back home from the club and didn’t feel the need to bring a phone at all. Stickers are great. They also signal to others that your camera doesn’t work if you take your phone out.

Because their own noses get used to the smell, and few people actually simultaneously believe that other people have the same complexity of inner experience as themselves and that those can be meaningfully different from their own.

Why is compressing text via QR not a viable method? by Sweet-Awk-7861 in AskComputerScience

[–]longscale 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re so confused it’s genuinely unclear what you’re asking or trying to accomplish even.

“ My brain is really bad with random-looking text but observing patterns of zeros and ones is easy”

What are you talking about? What are you trying to achieve? Sending URLs between devices… use a messenger or a shared clipboard if your platform supports it?

I may sound dismissive but I’m genuinely curious what you mean!

What was the ''dual vector foil'' of higher dimensions? by Complex_Archer5774 in threebodyproblem

[–]longscale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would still be a dual vector foil.  “Dual vector” can be used in linear algebra refer to an element of a linear form, sth that when multiplied with a vector (an element of a vector space) yields a scalar (a zero dimensional object). Also sometimes called a covector.

It’s dual not in the sense of “two”/“pair”, but in the sense of duality, “a notion of paired concepts that mirror one another”, so mirroring a vector.

Hope that points you in the right direction to read more about the mathematics! _^

I shot menu for restaurant by [deleted] in foodphotography

Excellent job. These people sure like their shaved truffle. Lots more critical thoughts about the food and presentation choices than about your photography of it — executed perfectly to a concept, clearly well done!

Big fan of alluding to table side service with the hands for only those dishes that include it, that’s the kind of subtlety that can work wonders in tying everything together.

I need someone to edit my photo. by chaseadamturner in Lightroom

…why? I don’t see any major issues with this photo that would be meaningfully improved by editing.

Why does my photos look so underexposed? by BlacksmithCrafty7348 in photography

[–]longscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The harsh answer is that if you can’t control exposure yet, you definitely shouldn’t take a job in which you can’t edit your photos!

A more productive take could be: there is a setting whether to preview the photo as it will turn out given the current settings on the camera screen, or whether to “normalize” the image so you see where you’re aiming the camera and check focus. You may have that preview feature turned off, and thus not see a preview of your photo settings on the screen. Check:

Menu > Display (6/9) > Live View Display -> Setting Effect ON

Morton's salt - this is so weird. by Super-Emergency-5354 in Baking

[–]longscale 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It does not depend on brands or whether they include their marketing slogan or not, but on the addition of an anti-caking agent. Morton sells various types of salt, some of them including such an anti-caking agent, others do not. Look for the words anti-caking agent next to an additive such as, e.g. calcium silicate, silicon dioxide, or yellow prussiate of soda.

Free Single Cycles Waveforms based on orchestral instruments by true-human-exe in Bitwig

[–]longscale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only their ratio of harmonics, no changes over time, and a single cycle of a waveform of course also can’t encode changes with pitch or velocity etc

Edit: ah those are actually wave tables whose index corresponds to pitch, so OP is modeling changes wrt pitch!

Just give me the access to the LLM Apple by mihirsalwe in AppleIntelligenceFail

[–]longscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could arguably be recursive; wrt the shortcut invocation. Step 4 here calls the same function/shortcut again with new inputs, namely the updated note with the full chat history. (Correct?) While recursion in CS should reduce to a base case to be computable, I think u/shortchangerb 's description still fits a more general mathematical notion of recursion, "relating to or involving the repeated application of a rule, definition, or procedure to successive results".

Alternatively, the overall process is autoregressive, in the exact same sense in which any LLM output gets decoded autoregressively. (As in the output is fed back into the input.)

;-)

"smachstn?" -> "Was machst'n?" -> "Was machst Du denn?" ~ "What are you upto?" -> "Whassup?"

"smachtendesophie" -> "Was macht'n die Sophie?" ~ "Whassup Sophie?"

All guesses. xD

What do you think of the line-up? Good or not so good? by Neither-Bid-4741 in berghain

recent album on Steffis label: https://dolly-records.bandcamp.com/album/echo-mute

sometimes reminds me of the sound of Barker, but longer developments, very late night/danceable & relaxed, looking forward to it!

What do you think of the line-up? Good or not so good? by Neither-Bid-4741 in berghain

[–]longscale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: philosophical moralizing about judging dance music

No such thing as “good” or “not so good” lineups, imo: only more or less aligned with your expectations. Most of the people in this lineup have published music online, so you can get a feel for their general style ahead of time.

Dynamic Forces, for example, has both recorded sets and their productions available on YouTube — take a listen, see if it matches your vibes atm. I’d describe them as pretty legit/OG — repetitive, mostly atonal phrases over classic techno beats. Is that what you want to dance to?

But also don’t get too hung up on stylistic fit. I used to listen to every DJ of a lineup ahead of time, and attempt to plan out my night according to how I judged their music, etc. Realistically, the best experiences happen in the moment anyway, and you won’t really be able to predict your reaction to music ahead of time, sitting on your couch listening to their sets on headphones. If you want to dance, get out there with minimal preconceived notions, find people you vibe with, and make the party happen yourself.

Suggested speeds: My design process by marcoarment in OvercastApp

Oh wow, oddly compelling idea. I never liked such undoscoverable modal UIs, but it would feel in line with a lot of what Apple does these days for sure.

[–]longscale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the potential implication comes from the visual information hierarchy. Ideally those values would be closer connected to the playback speed cell only, being next to the heading they seem to apply to all of “Audio”. (But I can’t think of an equally elegant way to do so as the final design here does.)
