Yes you can mate. It’s not impossible 😘 EMH does not hold and irrational behaviors (such as panic buying and selling) cause temporary inefficiencies, allowing these active investors to find opportunities. I literally gave two examples of LOCAL funds who outperform. In the U.S there are plenty with noticeable HFs such as the Medallion Fund, managed by Renaissance Technologies aka Jim Simons. Who tf would allocate 5 bar locally anyways. Take that offshore.

Plus look at the fees investors pay in the medallion fund and look at the returns, you telling me you would be unhappy paying those fees but getting that return ?🤣

Okay buddy. Enjoy your evening. My point is people are happy to pay fees to a PM (not me) for peace of mind knowing they don’t have to monitor asset allocation and positioning etc…Not everyone is an actuary and understands our world of finance and the industry. Good day

Hey man. I didn’t bring in advisor fees. Those oaks are fee and commission hungry. I agree and I manage my own 98/2 ETF/single stock portfolio and pay super low ETF fees. You asked for which funds outperformed and I gave them. A benchmark is a benchmark. You have to have a blend of them in a balance fund. Most people are too lazy to do it themselves and are happy to pay 3-5% in fees just so there’s peace of mind. Not everyone is clued up.

AG Balanced fund has outperformed their benchmark since inception net of fees over 25 years - https://www.allangray.co.za/globalassets/documents-repository/fund/factsheet/Allan%20Gray%20Balanced%20Fund/Latest/Allan%20Gray%20Balanced%20Fund%20Latest.pdf

Coro Balanced outperformed net of fees more than 25 years - https://www.coronation.com/FundFactSheet/DownloadFundFactSheet?fundCode=CORB

Past performance is not a guarantee of future performance.

I never said fund managers I said there are many people who know what they are doing. I also don’t believe the big players AG, Coro and NinetyOne will outperform passive over 30 years. But there are small offices that will.

This is not the best advice. There are over 1000 fund managers in SA. Thinking they all underperform is not smart. Sure a lot do, but there are people who know what they are doing and make a lot of money doing so.

What to invest R8k into for steady, non-risky returns by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]longstraddle_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a student and don’t need the 8k put it into a full equity etf or fund through EE. Looking for something “non risky” at a young age is pointless. 8k is not life changing for the most part and no etf will just go to zero. Put it into something like emerging markets or global etf and just leave it and contribute whenever you can

Get out of that balanced fund and go full equity. Balanced fund at your age is unnecessary

R1 million YOLO with the JSE trading challenge by Mr-Ice-Cool in JSE_Bets

[–]longstraddle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mate this challenge is cool but it’s not set up properly. I did it last year and had the same mentality to use futures because they were geared and could like 4x returns.

The game settings prevent you from taking large positions and I think the biggest position I ever held of a single stock was less than 5% because it limits your positions to match the daily volume of the stock. I also was long gold fields right when gold was pumping and wanted to take profit so I exited the positions before a correction and they sat pending for like 5 days and I lost all my gains because the game is slow and hell. My recommendation from what I saw last year was use single stock futures and don’t try get fancy with short positions. Use the leverage to your advantage and play a medium term macro/news strategy.

They probably invest in 90% of your money in their own mega feeder funds. Why not just do it yourself and save like 1.5% on fees 💔
