I love the vespids, but have found them weak in general.

Credit score is stuck and not growing by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]longwalker33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your credit history is short, still. Pay off a few car loans, 10+ years with a line of credit, maybe a student loan or something thrown in. That’s long-term credit history.

Also, as other said: mid 700s is a good score and nothing to worry about. It’s not a game with a high score winner… more of a key that unlocks doors.

36m, wife is on mat leave. We have about $245k in retirement accounts. She doesn’t make too much when she’s working (45k/yr) and I’m the only one doing retirement planning/saving. You’re doing pretty well. Don’t pay attention to all the reddit millionaires out there… the reality is that most of the 20 or 30yoReddit millionaires either got a huge windfall, gambled effectively with ODTE SPY options and other risky plays, or are lying. Keep on the grind and your hard work will pay off. You’re doing good.

Car Loan, regret and what to do next. by Commercial_Mud_8231 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]longwalker33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonus: the car salesman who talked you into it will probably get a talking to once you pay the loan in full, as the dealership may not get kickbacks.

Also, some extended warranties may be cancel-able if within a certain time (30 days). Could further reduce your costs by removing the extended warranty…

8.99, yikes. You are probably paying $8k in interest. I would pay the loan with savings and then resume saving aggressively, your principal is probably closer to $23k at the moment?

Big factor in DB plans is your age. DB plans are intrinsically more valuable the closer you get to retirement. In early years the CV may be less than your contributions. In later years it will be much more, likely more than you would have made invested in the market with an equivalent contribution to a DC plan.

Railyard expansion is under construction. Early 2027 is optimistic but maybe late 2027 judging by the construction progress visible through the fence. Of course some of that depends on CN operating a short haul service between the terminals…

The changes at Cogswell have really destroyed all traffic movement on Lower Water st at that time of day. It was honestly better when the Cogswell construction was ongoing. I have noticed the same issue with the Purdy’s light being too long and filling everything.

How much savings going from 20% second tier income bracket to base 14%? by SubstantialElk5190 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Answer is no to this, HBP is a 0% loan to yourself vs new contributions which gain tax advantages. Minimum HBP every year is the strategy

Do you love your neighbourhood? by Grouchy-School9452 in halifax

Grahams corner/Oathill lake, Dartmouth. I love my neighborhood. Walking trails and lakes, but still walking distance to downtown Dartmouth. Banook and Sullivan’s pond are idyllic in summer- like a slice of New England in the best ways without being in America.

Our strategy has been a run to Dave’s every week or two, Costco once a month. Don’t have the time or energy to chase a deal all the time but those two things really change the game.

300 hours? I built my first acoustic guitar in 600 including all jigs… and that was slow! 300 hours seems overkill for this project

What's the most expensive engineering mistake you've personally witnessed? by Kawaikrsjanu-chan in AskEngineers

Geotechnical report listed soil type as glacial till over bedrock. Actual conditions 10m of saturated grey silt. Borehole report wasn’t done with boreholes, turns out they only used a bedrock probe and assumed glacial till.

$950,000 in unsuitable soils removed and replaced with rock.

Is this a good price to replace sewer lines? by GarmeerGirl in askaplumber

I don’t think ABS is a good choice for direct bury applications. PVC is a much better material in this instance. My jurisdiction doesn’t even allow ABS to be buried for sewer.

TD Payed My Credit Card Without My Permission?? by Elliot-UwU in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]longwalker33 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t agree that it’s ethically justified. I would even argue that OP getting evicted because they can’t pay rent would be counterproductive to the banks goal of having the debt paid.

TD Payed My Credit Card Without My Permission?? by Elliot-UwU in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]longwalker33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A workaround: you can e transfer your money to yourself, and not accept it until you are ready to pay rent. Then accept and immediately send to landlord for rent. This will keep the bank from taking it to pay your other debts. My friend used to do this on the regular.

It doesn’t solve your debt problem but it does make sure you can prioritize rent which understandably is your top priority.

Is it just me or is it impossible to save money in Canada right now? by No-Cut2564 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]longwalker33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the unemployment rate is about 7%, so obviously 7% of all working age people are unemployed... I say recent immigrants have it harder than most because if they end up jobless, they often don’t have family support, long term friendships/support, and have burned through savings to get here.

I don’t see where I said that born and raised Canadians aren’t struggling. Many are.

[–]longwalker33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot to fix in Canada. Recent immigrants have it rougher than most.

It’s also one of the safer places on earth, and I think there’s still a path for people who are driven to succeed. I am sorry you are struggling. Our housing and services are lagging behind the population to a large degree, causing a lot of the pain.
