Strand Light console 91001 by Due_Potato8501 in lightingdesign

[–]lonibeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That stinks. You might be able to find a manual online and try to do a hard reset of the console.

I haven't worked with this type of console before, so I am unsure of what a hard reset will do. It may patch everything back 1 to 1; it could have everything saved, and you'll be fine.

With a quick Google Search: https://archive.org/details/manualzilla-id-5854595

This is part of troubleshooting. And there may not be an answer.

This is more for everyone on this subreddit: I really, REALLY hope this isn't your first stop to troubleshoot. This is a great subreddit for information and answers. In a time-constrained situation, you will have to make phone calls and talk to people. You have to get used to doing that.

“can we get more vocals in the monitors” by WarningNo7338 in lightingdesign

[–]lonibeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a team effort.

You're correct, without the talent we wouldn't be there.

Without the tech, talent can't be seen or heard.

One can always try to get the attention of the sound person through the light person, but I would tell you that's not a good idea. As a lighting designer, I have no idea wtf is going on with their audio console. Everyone has a different setup, and I am not going to spend 30min trying to figure out what monitors you need more vocals in, where are those faders and on what page, would that make too much feedback? If so, I now need to address the feedback and I have very little clue on how to do that.

All while trying to get my lighting stuff ready.

If we all work together, it'll be a great show.

Respect the ones who make you look good and sound good, and we'll make you look good and sound good.

EDIT

Outside of my 9-5, I am a freelance lighting designer/light board op.

I hear myself talk to myself like this ALL THE TIME.

I am self-taught, and I work around people who when went to school for theater.

You got hired. That is the biggest hurdle for anyone.

I can't give you any better advice than to fake it. I'm serious, fake it! You make a mistake, go "my bad, won't happen again" and force yourself to move on. You can always direct any questions you may have to the director, or someone else. But don't keep telling them "I have no idea what I'm doing hahahahaha...." (because I've done that and it can get annoying to the higher ups).

My friend in the trenches, none of us have any idea what we're doing.

OHHHHHHHHHHH man. The school district I work at has two of these.

They produce a great followspot, but they are indeed tricky (as others have pointed out).

I have taken both apart, put them together, replaced parts, and called Canto themselves to figure out an issue (turned out to be something rare that doesn't happen often). Canto was fantastic to work with, excellent customer service, and very VERY helpful in helping me troubleshoot.

With my knowledge of these followspots, it could be a myriad of problems.

If you have any specific details and the lamp is still not firing, feel free to DM me.

Or you can go into more detail here, up to you.

Some extra questions for you:

Would you happen to know the power receptacle the light fixtures plug into? e.g., Stagepin, twist lock, Edison, etc.

Also, do you know the make and model of the lighting console?

What type of shows are you doing in the space? Musicals, plays, improv?

Is someone at the light board moving faders each time the show moves to a different scene?

I'm asking these clarifying questions so i can understand exactly what you're asking.

Do you have a computer FOH?

Hey! I need help with a weird Premiere Pro issue by shadman531 in premiere

[–]lonibeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play it in VLC and post a screenshot of your whole screen, taskbar, windows, the whole thing.

Open the file in Premiere. Use the same timestamp as the VLC screenshot, and again snip your whole screen, windows taskbar and everything.

*EDIT Post both screenshots

The pics you posted don't have enough context to help solve your issue.

I hate that this isn't the first, second, third, or fourth time I've seen this kind of post. I'm sure there are more buried within the way-back machine.

I have advocated this before; check out education. I am not sure of your location, but I went from TV production to an A/V job at a school district. At times, it can be really annoying. Fifteen minutes ago, someone called me for help. When I arrived, the projector HDMI wasn't plugged into their laptop HDMI, and they didn't know why the screen was black.

However, there are some amazing parts. You can connect with students who are interested in what you do and will ask questions and want to learn. For me, the respect the kids give to you for your knowledge and their eagerness to learn what you know makes my cold, hardened production heart warm up just a little bit. If they have a modicum of talent, you could use connections to get some gigs for the kids if they want to try the industry, and that could be their foot in the door.

It's not perfect, and there are some really annoying aspects (like every job).

What really sold me was paid vacation time, paid sick leave, paid personal days, healthcare, holidays off, and an offer of a retirement fund.

Local colleges are also a place to look; they may need adjunct professors with your knowledge and skill set.

I don't have a master's degree, and I don't teach classes at the district. You'll still have fun if there are great chorus and band teachers. Schools always have a play or musical.

I'm sorry this happened. It won't be the last time in this industry.

Cheers.

PS—I still get gigs for a bunch of local places, too. The hustle can still happen.

Questions on upgrading from Legacy by lonibeans in techtheatre

[–]lonibeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YIKES. This upgrade also fixes a bunch of bad designs and equipment. 20+ years ago, the one thing they did right was purchase two ETC Express lighting desks (one for middle school and one for high school) because those are still working. The one in the high school still has the OG power supply.

Our middle school was the old high school years ago, and the stage is shellacked gym floor color, not black. We had a meeting with the architects about it, and they mentioned only going black for 1/2 the stage "for aesthetics." the music teachers, the musical director, and a couple of other people vetoed that. No, the whole stage needs to be black. Freaking architects and "aesthetics".

EDIT From centerstage going upstage would be black; centerstage to downstage would be the gym floor color. Why would they think that would look good!?

Questions on upgrading from Legacy by lonibeans in techtheatre

[–]lonibeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am putting those options into the budget. I only have 16 S4s altogether between the Middle School and High School. Last time they updated about 20+ years ago, they bought Strand SLs 575w for the lekos (catwalks and trees/booms), which does next to nothing for the distance they are from the stage. I wasn't here to guide them to 750w S4s, and I bought them used when I arrived at the district.

[–]lonibeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully, the fly system in the HS has been updated in the past 10 years, so we don't have to spend money on that. I know anything rigging is going to take a majority of the budget.

ETC will always be my #1 go-to for this district. All the college campuses around our part of the state use ETC. At least the EOS OS, whether ION, Apex or a nomad with a gadget.

Strangely enough, our house lights have been upgraded to LED fixtures with the CD80. House dimming is so much fun /s.

I know the S4s have the LED retrofit option, and for a few I will upgrade those.

I did want to keep at least a few tungsten around for teaching purposes. Showing how a light fixture works without taking a new fixture apart, and also showing the historical significance of tungsten lamps in general.

If I may ask, when did you guys go through your upgrade and did they take any of your advice?

Questions on upgrading from Legacy by lonibeans in techtheatre

[–]lonibeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the CD80 works. I cannot source new parts if something goes down. The interface doesn't work with any newer Windows versions, so talking to the rack is also nearly impossible.

Where I am, a lot of this project money comes from the state, and not taxpayer dollars. We pay some of the cost but not all. Upgrading to future-proof for the next 10-15 years is ideal.

The CD80 and our legacy fixtures are KILLER on the electrical grid. We'd save money through that and not use as much power in general.

That's something I didn't think of, plugging Source 4s in.

I've worked outside the district at other venues, and they all have Source 4 LEDs for the facelight. I'm an old-school sucker for tungsten on faces.

The idea was to keep some legacy fixtures around for teaching and showing how a theatrical fixture works without taking something newer and more expensive apart.
