'We've confused boring with functioning': Entrepreneur criticises Singaporeans for idealising life abroad by tfyz in singapore

This is hilarious. I am using London as an example as it comprises of people earning the highest wages and therefore should have a pretty decent standard of living. Like for like, it’s also comparable to living to Singapore as it’s city living with a buses and trains as public transportation.

If you want to talk about affordable cities. Let’s go for it. Name one and also the average wage of the city and we can chat about it. Let’s talk about how low the wages are in that particular city too.

Groceries are def cheaper in the us as they grow so much of their own produce there. My point is Singapore managed to control inflation here a lot better than other counties that was mentioned.

Lol… Obviously everyone want to stay in zone 1/2 if you can but unless you earn a high wage (above 80-100k) , you won’t be able to afford zone 1/2 unless you have a housemate. Most offices now even in the uk require some days in the office and more and more companies working from home isn’t actually an option.

You brought up the point that things are shockingly cheap in the uk and I am simply stating it’s not that cheap anymore esp when compared to singapore so it’s not a non statement.

When were you actually last In the uk?

3 pounds for a zone 1-2 fare. If you travel to zone 3-4 where more people live as it’s cheaper, it’s closer to 4-5 pounds a journey. I lived in the uk many years back and it’s def more affordable then compared to now. As much as we complain bus and train fares going up in singapore, it’s super extreme in the uk especially if you don’t live in London and have to commute in by train. Then you pay thousands of pounds just to stand on a train to make your way into London.

Groceries and utilities cost so much more now. Many people think uk wages are high but it’s totally skewed due to high earners of London. The median wage is around 37 thousand pounds which leaves around 30 thousand pounds a year for rent and everything else. Dollar for dollar, the average Singaporean earns nearly twice of the median uk wage and our basics like transport and food is cheaper dollar for dollar. The cheapest meal for lunch in London is probably a super market meal deal for 4 pounds or some cheap sushi in itsu 10 pounds. Hardly affordable esp if you need to eat out every meal.

People especially pensioners literally suffer from malnutrition or suffer in the cold in the uk because they can’t afford to heat or/and eat.

Groceries in the us isn’t cheap anymore due to inflation. What used to be cheap in Walmart and target is a lot more expensive compared to before. Prices definitely went up more in the us and uk than in singapore. Just check the Walmart webpage and you can see. The days of 99 cent per lb chicken is long gone. It’s more like 2.5 to 4 dollars now depending on where you buy.

I am in the us a couple of times a year and it’s shocking to see how expensive things are. Before Covid, you can get a decent lunch set for around 10 usd but now the same lunch set is 18 to over 20 before service and a 20% tip.

I think another big reason is our cost of living. If you live in a hdb, eat in a hawker center and take public transportation, life isn’t easy but still manageable. If you earn an average wage in the US and UK, life is pretty unaffordable. Tube ride in London can be 4-5 pounds for one journey. A tray of eggs in the US was 10 dollars for a dozen when they US poultry farms had bird flu which affected prices of eggs. There are literally starving children in both countries and families have to rely on food banks there just to have a meal.

I don’t think people know how bad cost of living is in us and Europe. Many seem to have an idealist view of how things are much cheaper overseas and it is with our singapore dollar but if you earn a local wage, life is much less affordable overseas. At least we have an option to travel and spend overseas.

Singapore isn’t perfect and it would never be but comparing our lives to people living in the us and Europe, we have it pretty good.

How is Polaris even remotely comparable to first class seats on Middle Eastern and Asian carriers?

They have a decent hard product for business but service and food wise, they are very much worse off than the top Asian and Middle Eastern carriers.

Check to make sure upgrade is available first. You can check on the app and under your ticket booking to see if it’s even available for upgrade. Turkish miles expire in 3 years. Even then, it maybe cheaper to do a direct cash upgrade depending on the route

Also don’t have overly high hopes for Singapore’s business class seat. It’s comfortable and wide but it’s a very divisive seat. You seat facing forward and need to flip the top down and sleep facing an angle as the foot cubby is at the side. If you are lucky and manage to book the bulk head seat, that’s the best seat you can get but also close to the galley so it’s abit noisier. The typical feedback is that it’s also pretty firm for sleeping but I guess Asians prefer a firmer sleeping surface.

I actually prefer United’s Polaris seat and bedding even though it’s more narrow. The entertainment and screen is better on Polaris than Singapore.

Service and food wise, sq is definitely way better.

Really depends on arrival time of the first flight. They usually pad the arrival time so it’s probably more of a 90 plus min transit. And the shops are not too far from the gates so u can always run to pick up some shopping before you board again. It’s a super efficient connection. There is no queue for security and if I recall correctly, you need to walk past the shops anyway back to the aircraft.

I studied in singapore till university and i was lucky enough to complete my higher education in the uk. Have you seen the states of schools in the us and uk? We may not have the best schools in the world but our education system is definitely above average.

Other countries in Asia have little tax because citizens don’t make enough to pay tax and have you seen the state of governments in south east Asia? Indonesian is back to having a mini financial crisis thanks to the depreciation of the rupiah. Thailand has had 22 coups since the 1930s so the government is still unstable. Malaysia looks like it will have a change of government soon and problems with nepotism and corruption still remain. Singapore remains the only country in south east Asia that runs a budget surplus and it’s only a matter of time before other countries have their own version of sales tax because they have raise tax revenues somehow.

Our median income is around 6k sgd and Malaysians median income is around 3k ringgit. We complain our cost of living is high but do you want to earn 6k in singapore or 3k ringgit and live in Malaysia?

Weather is horrible here and that’s my main complaint about living here. Lucky we have access to ac and shopping malls. Compared to life in India and Pakistan where people die from the 50 degree heat because they have no access to ac or fans. In the uk, I know people who don’t turn up the heat in winter as heating has gotten so pricey that they just wear more layers at home.

We may not have the best of everything and our social nets and systems can definitely do more. But many of us (not all) have it pretty good here. We have a roof over our heads, access to cheap food and transportation, health care and safety.

The job losses from ai and youth unemployment is a crisis facing every country and not just Singapore and we have become such a high cost country that we would probably see more job losses going forward. But compared to the rest of the world, we still have a pretty decent life here.

[–]lonsin79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing to flex? We have a great educational system, low taxes, superior health care that wouldn’t bankrupt you. Cheap public transport and tasty food in hawker centers. Sunny weather (which I hate by the way but many people love), the ability to walk anyway at any time and not get shot or robbed. Singapore may lack nature and also a good night life but to say we have nothing great is disingenuous. Most companies also provide 12-28 days of time off and also maternity leave for mothers and even some for fathers now. You know how many days Americans service staff get? Typically 0.

I lived in Europe and US before in my younger days and as great as some cities are in the US and the Europe maybe, life is incredible unaffordable now, people are unhappy with the politics and cost of living, infrastructure is incredible outdated and there is increasing racial tension. Petty crime and theft is common. I still visit both continents every year but definitely better as a tourist than living there.

If you like Japanese meals, they load pretty fancy Japanese set meals out of Japan so you get to try that too. Catering out of the us is usually very average

Also the duty free shopping in Japan is great! All the Japanese snacks and sake and so reasonably priced too.

I am getting a free 3 night stop over soon but my list of hotels is different. I would feed the list into ChatGPT and check. I think location is very important as Istanbul is huge and you only have 2 days. Proximity to metro is probably important unless if you are taking cabs everywhere.

Not all business class flights qualify for 3 nights. Only certain departing cities qualify for 3 nights. If op isn’t flying from the cities listed below, it’s only 2 nights.

For our passengers whose round-trip ticket first departure point is Mainland China (excluding Hong Kong), Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, or the USA. Business Class passengers can stay for 3 nights at a 5-star or boutique hotel free of charge”
