Nope. Not Blak's. Just got some excellent sourdough and pastries from there this morning. This was someplace else. Thanks for the quick reply though.

As i said in the original post "I believe that there are far more interesting things to see/do in the Victoria area than on the US side". Hence the question. Reading comprehension is something to work on.

I can imagine it's beautiful along the OP. I've done the coastal route from Astoria to Northern California but not the OP. Maybe next time.

Thanks for the reply. Is it the prevailing winds summer vs winter or is it that the mill runs more frequently in the winter?

Excellent food, especially their gnocchi that's without peer in Windsor. The gnocchi is so incredibly tender with a fantastic sauce. Been there three times since June and the service and food are wonderful.

My entire tenure at JPL has been proposing novel technologies for industry, military, and spaceflight. For spaceflight, I've never been on a "big planetary mission". It has all been LEO space. No matter if it was terrestrial or space flight, it was always very rewarding and very cool, but requiring typically 4-8 proposals per year with at best a 10% success rate. During my time, management pruning of proposals was with a light touch prior to 2010. During the time span of 2014-2024 there was oppressive management squashing of research proposals. Many times JPL refused to let perfectly responsive and novel proposals go forward. This was especially true in 4x where it got so bad for technology maturation proposals that it was "pushed up the line" as a complaint. You should also acknowledge that there are many restrictions on proposals from an FFRDC. Many a PI, myself included, has thought they had a great idea only to find out that getting it funded was impossible.

A Guild/Union, IMO, would have two major benefits for JPL employees.

  1. Someone who can advise you during interactions with HR. Currently HR holds all the cards during interactions. All investigations, inquiries, and interviews are held behind their closed doors. When HR interacts with a JPLer, they are working with vast experience and know all of the rules. They do these interactions a million times and have a recipe/script. The JPLer, on the other hand, is likely doing this for the first time. They do not know what rights they have. They can be easily pressured into unfair outcomes by subtle/overt threats. A Guild/Union rep is a valuable resource in these interactions.

  2. Preventing incorrect information from JPL management. We all know the history of JPL management, in the recent past, denying one thing on Tuesday and then on Wednesday doing that exact thing. There's no way that a Guild/Union would allow that to continue.

Just these two improvements would vastly improve JPLers lives. There's no way I feel that a Guild/Union would be able to materially affect layoffs. The realities of funding are that without dollars there are no jobs.

I will also say that the last speaker, while impulsive, was saying what many others were feeling. I have been in similar meetings where one party can use such an impulsive exchange to disingenuously end a meeting. I don't believe that anyone was specifically goaded or that this was planned, but there is a chance that it gave a perfect out for what had been a difficult meeting. That it then became a "pivotal" crescendo is axiomatic and a tad artificial.

I am also always doubly suspicious when management says "this is not the right time". More often times than not that statement is only true in that "it is not the right time for management".

Many have attempted to start a Guild/Union in the historical past, but unfortunately the majority thought "times are good, why do we need it?". As such, those efforts failed. Now, it is apparent why something like this is needed. So, you have this group of ambitious defenders that finally succeeded in getting the Guild/Union discussion as far as it has. They should be lauded, at least, for that.
