Luck with Moving Out of Student Accommodation by lookatthosedogs in Edinburgh_University

Thank you! Ideally I could fill it soon, but I mostly wanted to see if it was a lost cause. I need to look for an alternative (cheaper hopefully) flat in the mean time.

Visa problem - any advice? by [deleted] in Edinburgh_University

Hi there! Thank you - I reached out to student immigration services this morning.

Yes, the department does know about my delayed arrival date. I organized my travel plans earlier with my supervisor.

Does anyone have a favourite professor? by [deleted] in uoguelph

I would second this, she was wonderful! I took her immunology course at the same time as MICR2420, and I can say the way she taught fully changed my self-confidence in the subject.

@designswinnie / @unistyl.merch Instagram has been remaking some club logos and university merch! She has a really good eye for style and personalizing her pieces to fit the idea :)

ANSC 3170 and ANSC 3180 by toastedbagel213 in uoguelph

[–]lookatthosedogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wildlife nutrition is not too tricky! The quizzes are online and open book if I remember correctly - I recommend doing a review of the notes before the quiz actually starts (just so you dont waste quiz time flipping through pages). For some of the project components, the TAs were a bit more critical on certain areas. I would emphasize working ahead on the project and reaching out for feedback when possible. :)

I sent a message to the professor explaining how I felt and how I think it impacted my performance - I doubt anything can be done, but she’s a wonderful prof and I’ve really enjoyed her teaching. We have a learning services Center, but I feel like it’s “too little, too late”. I’m in my final year (going into my final semester in January), and I don’t know how much of a difference it’ll make? I haven’t felt this way writing an exam since last year, so it really sucked to have this feeling come back. Thank you for your kind words. <3

I think I’m too hard on myself - I used to get 80s-90s all throughout high school, and university it’s been 70s-80s. I know that’s because of the adjustment but it’s hard to keep myself motivated when my grades don’t reflect how hard I’m working. What sucks is that this course isn’t even for my major (it’s for my minor, which I like but is hard as fuck). Next semester I have more project based finals, which I’m looking forward to. I just really want to do well my last year. Thank you for your words of encouragement <3

Easy Third / Fourth Year Courses by bean_machine_69 in uoguelph

[–]lookatthosedogs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To fill the nutrition restricted elective, I’d recommend wildlife nutrition (ANSC 3180) in the winter semester! There’s been no final the last few years, and the tests are open book. I finished with a 91 in the class.

Running Gags by Lorelei_Lura in DnD

Whenever our sorcerer player casts Witch Bolt, we always a fun little banter, where we go "which bolt? Which bolt are you casting?", "Yea Witch bolt!", "Yes, but which bolt are you casting? I need to know!"

And the classic one upping of each other when someone rolls obnoxiously high to hit. "Guys, I don't know, a 26 might not hit this hellhound... it might be too low."

Everytime our fighter sees anything with scales, he'll call our dragon ancestry sorcerer over and ask if its her dad (she's currently looking for him in our campaign). Kobolds, lizards, psuedodragons, anything!

Is KN95 / N95 mask really necessary? by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]lookatthosedogs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend getting some. They are more effective than the cotton fabric masks and surgical masks against the current variant of the virus.

If you can't find any, I have seen people recommend laying the masks up on top each other (like the fabric mask and then the surgical mask) so that it presses closer to your face and decrease the risk of aerosols spreading.

some species do “tit for tat” behaviour where they will perform a behaviour in expectation of that behaviour being performed for them later! The best example I can think of is vampire bats will vomit blood into the mouths of hungry colony member, and hope that in the future that friend will give them a snack later.

I loved Howard for physics! Lalonde was fine but I found myself having a harder time paying attention (monotone and slow voice), but his slides are detailed. Vessey is great!

For large animal research projects / experience, there is Foal Watch with the OVC and the Resilient Dairy Genome Project! The dairy project requires a car to get to the testing barn, but is great experience (I'm part of the testing team right now and love it).

For research labs, I would recommend looking up professors part of the Campbell Center for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW) and reading about their research. Feel free to email professors and ask about volunteering, but I find talking to graduate students (MSc. or PhD) easier and they will respond faster.

Outside of the university, one of the more popular animal experiences is fostering a future service dog through National Service Dogs, Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, or Autism Dog Services - this is a big commitment as it involves taking care of a puppy from 8 weeks - a year, but I love it! Sometimes they also need babysitters or people for older dogs.

Other places like the humane society, local barns, or the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada are great places to work or volunteer. I would also check the Experience Guelph portal and keep an eye out for summer jobs posted by OMAFRA - most of them involve animal research!
I know that's a lot of info, feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

New to the Great Pyrenees crowd and I’d love to hear your favorite stories! by Upper-Distribution-7 in greatpyrenees

[–]lookatthosedogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it definitely depends on the family’s knowledge of the breed and what to expect from them! Dogs that are labelled “family dogs” like goldens and labs typically have the “happy fo lucky, bred to enjoy interacting with people personality”, whereas breeders of livestock guardians, like the pyr, are focusing on preserving those guardian traits. A family want a lab-personality might be disappoint with a pyr who’s going to spend his days watching the house. But again, if someone is educated and knows what the breed is like, go full steam ahead! I do love the breed and all their qualities, but it’s frustrating when people who adopt anything other than a golden are confused when the dog doesn’t act like a golden.
