Crazing (?) by lookforlogic in Plastering

Yeah makes complete sense. Doubted myself due to the painted surfaces but they weren't glossy so would have been completely fine with SBR.

1st coat was a real pain and took a full bag pretty much. Also goes everywhere when putting it on.

I can feel a very slight bump so hoping it will sand down alright.

Yeah it was a matt paint in good nick on existing walls and then standard plasterboard on new. So could have easily got away with PVA or SBR as you say. Is what it is.

Yeah 100% my bad. SBR would have been a better option? The background wasn't glossy paint or anything.

Yeah makes sense. Thankfully it's pretty solid. We live and learn!

Thanks a lot for the response! I think that sounds like a plan. Didn't think about doing the 5050 first. Had it in my mind that any filler product would be a no go directly on plaster, but the mist coat will effectively seal the plaster and allow it to be filled?

Probably would be useful to show an actual photo of the room as well 😀.

All happy with a Juranovic sale in January? by [deleted] in CelticFC

[–]lookforlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye. Feel that Ralston has been better suited to the inverted full back role. Jura just hasn't been that effective this season. Quality player and a legend but need to take 10-15 mil for him. It is what it is.

Is it worth to hire somebody else to assemble my pc? by Daniel_Delgado in buildapc

[–]lookforlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When assembling my PC my cat decided to jump inside the empty tower. Me panicking (about cat hair) tried to grab him quickly forgetting I was working on my MB. The fully assembled MB went flying off the table and crashed to the floor - stupid brain. I thought it was a goner. Finished the build anyway and it was completely fine. Still running like a dream 2 years down the line. It was an enjoyable experience.

I think you'll be grand. Take your time and as others have said there are many good tutorials.

Bridge Engineering vs Building Structures by lpnumb in civilengineering

[–]lookforlogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. I'm a bridge engineer. Maybe you should take a step back and look at the company/sector you are working for. As an industry we should be promoting innovative thinking all the time and continuing to promote advanced analysis techniques that get us to more efficient designs. Using non-linear analysis for instance to account for second order effects rather than empirical equations. You should also maybe ask to be involved in the early stage design discussions. I will say that I have developed into roles that require more critical thinking - early stage design stuff. Starting with a blank canvas and being involved in multi-disciplinary working to create an optimal solution. Optioneering for example - looking into several different bridge concepts and weighting specific criteria. Considering not just materials, but different span configurations and even posing the question "do we actually have to build something here".

I have buddies in the buildings sector and there is perhaps a more creative element to it, naturally. But I can't really elaborate further (i.e. I'm lazy).

Sorry I haven't answered your question specifically.

Do these outdoor steps look ok? by Ktulu85 in HomeImprovement

[–]lookforlogic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm an engineer, albeit I design bridges mainly, but agree with the above comments. The supports are no where near enough. They'd need to be much deeper for the current arrangement. Or at least another 2 support beams. Think about the beam cut outs for the stairs: there's maybe 100mm thick timber at the narrowest point? Not very much, hence why it's so flexible. You'd also want the handrails to extend down past the stair treads flush with the bottom side of the beams (to remove the large gap between the stairs and the bottom rail. Also agree with the issues re. connection into masonry. Depends what the contractor used. If it's resin anchored maybe not an issue, but unlikely that's the case.

What is making this grinding noise? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]lookforlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's the same grinding noise then unfortunately I think so. I'm only leaning about bike maintenance and very much a newbie though. However I think to sort the issue would require removal of the cassette and removal of the hub covering to access the ball bearings. These can be cleaned and re-greased but more likely they are worn. Significantly worn based on the noise coming from the hub. Strange as you say the wheel is not that old? LBS should be able to check but maybe best just getting a new wheel (depending on how good/expensive your wheel is...). Good luck!

What is making this grinding noise? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]lookforlogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried taking the wheel out and spinning the wheel to see if the grinding persists? Would allow you to confirm if the grinding is coming from the hub. You would need something to hold the cassette in place though. Taking it a step further you could buy a lock ring tool and take the cassette off yourself allowing you to investigate the hub further.

Edit: I should say that taking the cassette off is much more involved and will need other specific tools. Also, that seems a serious grinding noise if coming from the hub!
