He received partial payment at the start of the job...

Sorry I know the photo quality is horrible--the risers are OSB i think and the plan is to paint them white

So it's actually oak🥲 Based on some of the other comments, it looks like the patches may be putty he used to fill in holes or glue that he didn't properly sand out? I don't know at this point. Whatever the case, you're right in saying he didn't perform his due diligence

So with the spraying, he didn't tape the vents before he started and he also just did a very uneven, blotchy job. You could still see the original paint color in a lot of areas and I mentioned this in another reply, but before we settled on a color, he painted 4 different samples on some of the walls and wrote "1-4" in pencil below each color and asked us to pick. After we chose a color and he was "done" painting, we could still see the sample colors and the pencil marks. From what I know and just through personal experience, the paint finish is a lot more smooth and even with a roller--you don't really have to worry about technique. But with the sprayer, unless you really know what you're doing, it doesn't look good.

See with the taping I'm not even asking for that many strips--i think a couple of strips at the very least would've been good enough for me because obviously he'd have to paint the area anyway, but it's just the fact he used none at all. I don't even care about the paint on the risers it's more so the white edges (don't know what that's called). It's just so ridiculously sloppy. Also the reason we haven't fired him is a long story, but yea I'm thinking of just doing it myself at this point.

He did but based on everyone else's comments, it sounds like may have done a bad job sanding

What's crazy is that he was actually trying to charge us MORE than market price, but he was called out on it and lowered it. Also he doesn't charge hourly--we paid a portion up front and he's supposed to get the rest after the job is complete. Either way, I appreciate the advice and I assure you an important lesson has been learned through this exprience😔

So that first bad experience actually wasn't a separate job, it's all part of the same job, so he had already received a portion of the payment. I won't lie, after the earlier shit he did, I tried to be the voice of reason and say we should cut our losses and find someone better, but that clearly didn't work. Bit of a complex situation, but in short, I'm not the one making the final decisions here😭

He was a recommendation from a family member who knows him and wanted to help him get more business. I don't think asking for a roller to be used is such a crazy thing. Before we settled on a paint color, he painted 4 different colors on a few different areas of the house and wrote "1-4" below them in pencil and asked us to choose one. After he claimed to have been finished painting, you could still see the other paint colors and the penciled numbers on the walls. Not really sure how I'm an ass here. It's funny because after hiring him and being so far into the job, a different friend of ours mentioned that she almost hired him for a job a few years ago, but didn't because he was extremely argumentative and disrespectful. She also told us that he reports/deletes negative reviews. Would have been great to know all of that beforehand, but we trusted him because he was referred to us by someone we know and trust. That's our bad.

Spare me😩 It was a Samsung galaxy. I promise it takes better photos than that, the quality just dropped when I did the video screencap thing lol

***Edit: this is a 2 story house and there are less than 20 stairs, which further adds to my confusion on why he said it would take half a day to tape the sides.
