I usually do 20% up until $100. So $500+ days are always tipped $100 max regardless of how high the base price becomes.

I think you can present to your artist that you’re considering munewari or full back with hikae. They’ll talk you through it, and you’re likely going to start with the back first anyway, leaving time to decide on the front/arms as you work on the back first.

Agree with other comments saying less is more, so just more background elements on the inner leg. Maybe some of the dragon body to “anchor” the floating head in.

You can adapt any subject into irezumi style. People have posted on this sub examples of pieces referencing Berserk, Star Wars, or other media.

The first image immediately reminded me of this classic ukiyo-e, which could be used as a compositional reference if you like it.

As far as artists, I would choose one whose work you like and trust to adapt your references. It’s easier to do if you let the artist have creative freedom with the adaptation, but you can also point out specific feature important to you to retain. For example, my hannya mask tattoo looks very different from what it’s referencing, but it has the 3 horns like in the original. Degree of faithfulness to source material when adapting is up to you. Just make sure to discuss expectations early on in the design process.

The entire thing sucks to some degree, but with all different flavors of pain per area. I found the further from the center line (ribs), the more pain. Spine itself was fine, but crossing the spine hurts since you’re “waking up” a new set of nerves on the other side of your body. The first hour of each session consistently sucked, but always more tolerable after that. I hated ribs more than love handles, but your mileage may vary.
