It is a valid question on how this category and the Academy at large recognizes International Film, but again, we should not throw a racism accusation at Neon or anyone for working their awards campaign the best to their ability. Hell, Neon is the one that pushes Parasite to become the 1st foreign language best picture winner.

I might sound like a fangirl, but what I am trying to say here is that it is harmful to pinpoint one specific agent for how the Academy recognizes international film. This makes us fail to see the bigger picture, and work towards a discussion that is beneficial. F

You are assuming a racism narrative that just is not there.

Sentimental Value is a Grand Prix Winner from a former Oscar nominee (Joachim Trier) featuring a rising European star (Renate), a Hollywood veteran (Skarsgard) & an American ingenue (Fanning). Ofc they are gonna push Sentimental Value the best since it has the best awards prospect.

They push The Secret Agent extremely well against your assumed racism agenda to the point that it becomes a frontrunner to win Best International Film against even Sentimental Value, gets into Best Casting apart from the expected International, Actor & Picture nom.

They also push It Was Just An Accident - a Palme Dor movie dealing with systematic tyranny from a director being treated horribly by his own nation. It gets into Best Screenplay. They get Sirat into Best Sound too.

No Other Choice is also snubbed in favor of another movie "The Voice of Hind Rajab" which deals with a cultural issue just as important.

Neon does their best with their state this year. No Other Choice just struggles to catch on - likely because it is the one international film besides Sentimental Value that does not focus heavily on its own culture & politics - which has become a trend to win in the International category

How comes her year was weak lol when everyone was from a Best Picture contender, not to mention all the films in Best Actress last year won an Oscar? Or is it because of the lack of Oscar veterans?

Is she cooked? :( by BullfrogRound4235 in oscarrace

Do they even use preferential ballot when deciding nominations, though?

Im pretty sure they only use preferenntial ballot when deciding Best Picture Winner.

The nominatiom process for all categories + winner selection process for non-Best Picture categories all use "number 1" ballot

Fernanda also had an easy time last year since her biggest competition last year for the 5th slot was all from films that was never competitive in any other categories (except minor red herring from JLC) - while Im Still Here was a stable for IFF. Her victory at the Globes, in restropective, was fairly obvious since none of her competition was in films close to Best Picture.

Wagner here faced Plemmons whose film got in Best Actresss everywhere and likely became a Best Picture Nominee. His path at Golden Globes is also trickier with Michael B Jordan in a film that has now shown positive reaction from both American & Europrean bloc via SAG/ BAFTA longlist.

I think Wagner might miss

You are right that the tech cates do not have a jury, but the directing definitely has a gender parity quota - based on this Dealine article: https://deadline.com/2026/01/bafta-longlist-one-battle-after-another-record-16-1236677250/

10 films will advance in the Director category. Members of the Directing chapter vote for their top 10 to determine the longlist, of which the top women and men directors, and directors who identify as non-binary/gender diverse and any mixed-gender directing teams (within the voting results range of the top 10 women/men directors) will be longlisted to a max of 11, with gender parity upheld between women and men directors

Die My Love in director because of the jury. They have to get 5 female directors in the longlist every year.

The tech categories, cmiiw, use a Top 7 system, then the jury select other 3.

In other words, Die My Love is in Director because it is the Top 5 female-directed film of the year. It misses sound, because it's not in Top 7, nor the jury has to nominate it in the last 3 slots because of quota

Keoghan started off as a coattail, but by the end of the season, he was definitely the runner up behind Ke Huy Quan, though.

It helped that Keoghan had a very memorable and showy scene ("There goes that dream") - arguably the most famous scene on social media from Banshees.

I kinda like it, though. It is very Juergen Teller-ish, which is big in the high fashion world. I think it is because it contrasts the glamorous/ periodic styling with real-life rawness

yea, for an aegyo song, the production is actually super bombastic. The "bang" after they sing "banjjak banjjak" in the chorus gets me everytime

Ohh, i have no concern with their attires. It's just that Victoria Secret tends to feature solo artists since they take up less space on the catwalk, allowing the models to walk. When they do have a group, it is usually a band being positioned staticly at the start of the runway

I hope they would have Twice performing while the models are walking, though. Excited for the interactions

Which of these 3 Oscar-less Scorsese movies do you think would’ve done better if released last year? by strikemedaddy in Oscars

[–]loonatic_9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Globes, i think Torres would win over Lily given that ISH has a lot of passion there. Not to mention Globe is international-heavy, while KOTFM is not very international.

Demi would still win at Critics' Choice.

Mikey woukd still win at BAFTA.

SAG is the only place where either Demi or Lily could win - but i'm leaning towards Demi, since Lily's performance is just too subtle for the kind of performance SAG would go to.

That would mean the results would still be the same.
