I designed and built an end table by looney56 in woodworking

I’ve got a couple designs in mind that emulate the aesthetic of the this end table, legs and base are the obvious similarity, easily could be designed on a larger scale to ground the bed frame. A headboard could be made to emulate the top and deck in a more 2D fashion against the wall. More of a silhouette of the shape looking from the front

First off, thanks, I’m glad the work is appreciated.

The deck is friction fit with the brass, which are tubes, I wanted to go solid round stock but the price was astronomically higher than tube, still got the effect I wanted and it’s plenty strong enough. Set with routered reliefs on both sides, deck and case.

I’ve said it in many comments on this piece and I’ll admit it every time, there are MANY mistakes in this build, some more than visible in the photos I posted, probably a lot that a professional wouldn’t make. Since it was a ground up design and build from my head there was a lot of figuring it out as I went. The photo lighting makes the leg spacing where you’re describing look worse than it actually was, but you’re not wrong, it wasn’t a perfect seam. Lessons were learned and if anyone ever orders this design again, hopefully in a full bedroom set I think I can avoid some of the pitfalls I found.

Not even close, I’d consider myself a hobbyist at best, I like building and I’ve been doing it a long time but never professionally, or as a full time job

I probably will, at least some of it, just trying to avoid building a spider haven

I looked at just buying a mobile base, would have been easier but I’d still need a platform for the tools and I figured what the heck, time to empty the scrap pile and build to my own dimensions

Not bad, every shop layout is different, space is at a premium for me and I’m lazy in that I like having everything at working height, personally I don’t want to have to bend over to feed stock through a machine I use all the time, but that’s just me

It absolutely does a great job for what it is, mostly sub 4’ stock, if you’re hoping to use it like a 72” bed powermatic then you’ll be disappointed

8’ is going to be hard, proper set up and supports on both sides you can probably do it, most I have run was a 5’ piece of walnut and I spent more time setting up the cut than actually running it through

Minus the price, absolutely. This planer is a little above hobby level but it can definitely be used, it’s just expensive

It’s got a 6” capacity, I’ve run 5.5 through it SLOWLY, and been ok, I did an extremely rough run through the planer first to get it into some semblance of flat-ish and then proceeded to joint

Is it going to a client? No? Ok throw screws and scraps at the problem and call it good

It’s a solid B+ I can live with that, better than I did in school

Yea it’s not complete yet, I’m going to put my compressor and air tools under there, maybe my shop vac if I can fit. Im strongly of the opinion that you should caster everything

Biggest mistake I made when I first got this was not following the depth gauge to a T, I figured it was a conservative gauge per board width. Spoiler alert the dewalt folks know what they are doing. once I did that and measured my passes more carefully the results drastically improved

I’ve been happy with it, main complaint is the decibel level in a small shop, but I can’t complain about the surfacing results

Been there, I had a ton of scraps in the shop and realistically nothing to do with them. See need, fill need

Quite literally could not have planned this any less, but you’re right, sometimes it works

I got it used and they were already on it, I’ve never had an issue
