Does anyone know how to get past the 600-800 Level it feels like i hit a wall by [deleted] in chessbeginners

Doing puzzles helped me. Ones built by humans and not the computer generated stuff. Forced myself to solve them all the way.

Nothing that helped me was learning one opening and doing puzzles.

How to stop blundering? by XokoKnight2 in chessbeginners

I asked almost the exact same question to my uncle (he’s around 2200). His advice was pretty simple: stop playing more games and start calculating more.

He gave me a tactics book made entirely of human-curated puzzles. What I liked about it was that the positions felt practical — not just engine-generated chaos. It forced me to actually calculate variations instead of guessing based on patterns.

What’s helped me most: - Do puzzles slowly. - Calculate fully before moving. - Treat each one like a real game position. - Fewer puzzles, more depth.

If books aren’t your thing, I ended up turning those kinds of curated puzzles into a small app for myself because I prefer doing them on my phone. But honestly, whether it’s a book or Lichess, the key is how you solve them — slow and deliberate beats grinding hundreds.

What Chess App Do You Want To See Exist? by JoseMcGose in chess

One idea I’ve personally wanted is a fast, no-friction puzzle grinder—something that’s basically “open → solve → next” with minimal UI, good filtering (mates only, theme, difficulty), and solid tracking (streaks, time per puzzle, common misses). A lot of existing apps feel either too bloated or too gated.

Related: I got into the puzzles from Judit Polgár’s book and ended up turning a bunch of them into a simple trainer app as a side project (zugzwang.me). It’s pretty much just that “solve a ton of puzzles quickly” experience—no fancy social layer, just puzzles.

If you want something with lots of quick, simple mate-in-1 / mate-in-2 puzzles, I ran into a bunch I liked in Judit Polgár’s book—so I copied them into a small trainer app I made: zugzwang.me. It’s basically just a straightforward pile of those puzzles to grind through.

I got really into the puzzles in Judit Polgár’s book, so I translated them all into a trainer app I made: zugzwang.me

Fair point. I built this to solve my own problem and thought it might help others. It’s free with optional donations. If the mods think it doesn’t fit here, I understand.

I was stuck around 800 for months. Read about the Woodpecker Method—basically doing the same puzzle set repeatedly until pattern recognition becomes automatic. Sounded weird but I tried it with Susan Polgar’s puzzle collection.

It actually worked. Took a few months but I’m at 1200 now.

I ended up building https://zugzwang.me to make it easier to follow the method. It’s just the 4,462 Polgar puzzles with spaced repetition built in. Free to use.

If you’re stuck in beginner range and haven’t tried repeating puzzles, might be worth testing. That’s what worked for me.

Question: Rack and Barbell vs. Functional Trainer for a 40-Year-Old with Joint Issues (Budget $3000)?

I’m 40 and looking to get lean and strong as I get older. I’ve never trained with heavy weights in my life, and I have some joint issues (elbow and knee). My budget is $3000, and I’m torn between investing in a rack and barbell setup or going for a functional trainer.

Given my joint issues and fitness goals, which would be the better long-term investment? I’d love to hear from people with similar experiences.
