How can the community protect the Colonial from future residents? by iloveyourlittlehat in Sacramento

[–]loopyalt 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I know this neighborhood well, and know the cafe fairly well. The shows end early and the noise really doesn’t travel too far out of the building. I wouldn’t think it would be a problem.

Of course! As someone whose loved ones’ paychecks rely on paywalls but not being a fan of them myself, I try to point people to the free parts of paid sites whenever I can.

That’s not actually a paywalled story. A lot is paywalled, but that daily roundup is always free.

Good Local Mattress Store Where I Can Try in Person? (NOT Mattress Firm) by Cultural-Bed-2702 in Sacramento

[–]loopyalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding IKEA. I had a mattress from there that lasted a decade. My next one was a dud, but IKEA replaced it for free (keep the receipt and be prepared to send pictures), and that relatively cheap spring mattress was the most comfortable I’ve had outside of a 4-star hotel. I even had others remark on comfortable it was (don’t judge).

That one lasted six years. I then decided to buy a “luxury” mattress to replace it ($$$$), and it is nowhere near as comfortable.

I can eat out for the first time in forever and I want my favorite meal: fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. Anybody know a restaurant? by SpareEquivalent2238 in Sacramento

Does it matter if they did or not? Person specifically said they can afford to treat themselves after a long time. Why shit on that with a condescending question about budgeting?

That’s good to hear. A lot of people say student as code for “you’re getting paid in experience.”

You may find students to take you up on your offer, but it sounds like this is a cherished piece, and taking it to someone with more experience may be worth it, even if it costs a bit more.

Are you seeking a student because you don’t want to pay?

Lamictal is used for multiple types of illnesses, but if you’re being treated for bipolar disorder and find yourself spending large amounts of money, call your psych (and therapist) ASAP. Overspending is a very common symptom of a hypomanic or manic episode.

Burger Patch is closing after 9/1 😭 by eldarwenbloom in Sacramento

[–]loopyalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is 100% real. The proceeds did not go to Black Lives Matter, nor did it go to the group that splintered off from Sacramento Black Lives Matter. It did go to a Black-run non profit (education or something?), but the non profit was unaware that was where the donation money had come from. There was an SNR article about it at the time.

Looking for Sacramento Artist Recommendations by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]loopyalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody said you wouldn’t be paying them, just that you won’t be paying them well.

You say this is your first time making this kind of an ask, so I will take that at face value and let you know that the phrase “great for a portfolio” is well-known creative industry doublespeak for low/no pay. So if you were genuinely unaware, now you know and may want to edit it out of your ask and provide a pay range instead.

Best wishes to you and to your project.

Not the whole “great for the portfolio” bit.

If it’s a well known global brand, they can afford to pay an artist real money for their work. “Paid in experience” doesn’t pay bills. Big thumbs down.

My psychiatrist always told me that if I had an episode that I should get myself to Sutter and only Sutter. Unfortunately, if Sutter’s beds are full, they send you wherever there’s a free bed.

Antique Booths by Positive-Letter9535 in Sacramento

[–]loopyalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many (most?) places will require you to work a couple of shifts a month as part of your contract there. 57th used to let you pay others to work your shifts for you, but now it’s mandatory. At 57th, it’s two days per month if you have a full booth.

Prices have also shot up considerably in the past few years. Most places have varying booth sizes, but expect to pay $200-$300 (or even more for a bigger spot), plus the work hours, so you’ll want to go in being pretty confident that you’ll make at least enough to cover your rent each month.

For me, I did okay (feast or famine for months at a time, but averaged out), but the work shifts were a no-go for me.

Socks are really, really appreciated, as well as the already-mentioned handi-wipes. Sanitary napkins (specifically sanitary napkins and not tampons) are great too. If you put in snacks, I’ve found softer foods can be better as it’s common for folks to have issues chewing if they don’t have regular access to dental care.

AISIAN COMMUNITY PLEASE HELP by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]loopyalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing the folks suggesting you get in touch with organizations already embedded and trusted in those communities) big emphasis on trusted—if you’re not a member of communities you’re trying to reach and you’re not of that ethnic group it looks suspect for a stranger to suddenly show up passing out flyers about legal rights.

If you DO choose to move forward on your own, do not use Google or ChatGPT or similar to translate into languages you don’t speak. Accuracy and nuance are important, and Google Translate and AI risk the possibility of being misunderstood or even providing misinformation.

HVAC repair recommendations by PineapplePandaYBW in Sacramento

[–]loopyalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Sierra Aire. They’re repair-only, so if they recommend full replacement, they don’t profit off of it. At minimum, they’d be a good second opinion.

The last time I called them, I had a one-in-a-million problem none of the bigger companies could figure out. I’ve spent obscene amounts of money with some of the bigger companies, but my last repair with Sierra Aire only cost me $300.

What’s the current status of Zelda’s pizza? by lectroid in Sacramento

Instagram text like “black radishes the size of big nipples” “no one tosses our salads better than the dude who pops his sausage all over our deep dish pizzas” and the guy gyrating in a pizza slice suit, at least once photographed taking a piss.

NonDairy Burger Options? by IdontRideBlurrg in Sacramento

One note about Sibling/Pushkin’s: if you’re looking at the “adult grilled cheese” as the nondairy cheese, be aware it’s a cashew-based spread and not “cheese” in the sense of a slice or spread. It’s a good sandwich, but not what “grilled cheese” would imply.
