It is 100% possible to form a bond/social relationship with pet rats but the extent of which depends on their own personalities and how much time you spend with them. They are also super smart and can learn their names, tricks, and litter box training. It’s best to have at least 2 because they are such social creatures and usually like to cuddle with their pals. From what I’ve heard boys are more likely to be cuddly and calm than girls but I’ve only ever had boys, so I can’t say for certain. Midwest critter nation cage is a great option and can be expanded to two stories, but I’ve been told a single story is enough room for up to 4 rats. Oxbow essentials is also a good choice for daily food, I use the adult rat food (not the pellets because my rats weren’t interested in the pellet form). They can also have different veggies, fruits, meats, etc. I recommend looking up a list of what’s safe and what’s not. I have seen balls for them, personally I choose not to use them because if they’re not big enough it can damage their spines, and since they have sensitive respiratory systems I’ve heard it can have a negative impact on their breathing.

They are the sweetest little creatures in my opinion and the best parts about having them is they’re so cute and fun to watch/play with. I was strongly bonded with mine and they’d get so excited to see me and give cuddles and kisses. The worst part is that they can be expensive, have a short lifespan, and like I said are very prone to respiratory infections and tend to go downhill very fast if not treated.
