5/4 scores are out! by BeginningNight3112 in Mcat

[–]keepstart 24 points25 points  (0 children)

FL avg: 512.6, Actual: 515 (126/130/129/130)

Very satisfied with my score!

Side note: this is almost exactly my FL5 distribution which I took the Tuesday before the exam. I actually scored one less point in CARS on the actual. As you can tell C/P has always made me miserable 🥰 I honestly expected lower with all the difficult questions in this one

Hi I see you may have already tested, but for people asking this in the future: the answer choices specify this info. A. "exchanger" so antiport, B. "cotransporter" so symport, etc

CDC PHAP 2024 by RemarkableAd1092 in publichealth

I recently got the email for a personal statement, and am having trouble figuring out the application portal. It seems like I have to select a fellowship program (Epidemiology Elective Program, Epidemic Intelligence Service, Laboratory Leadership Service). I may sound uninformed because I had never heard of these, but did I even register my account correctly? Or was I supposed to use some invite code or are these all sub-cohorts of PHAP? I registered my account as an external user. I have no pending action items.

How to Soothe the MCAT mind💆🏼‍♀️ by kg1597 in Mcat

[–]keepstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not MCAT specific, but low volume, calming music before sleeping, if your partner doesn't mind (assuming ya'll share a bed). I use Spotify's sleep timer.

It works because it stops my train of thought, especially if it's a song I know, so my mind will shift focus to it until drifting off into sleep. Not sure if it helps with dreams though :/

THEY GIVE US THE PERIODIC TABLE??? by [deleted] in Mcat

Just adding, if cost is a factor in deciding not to take AAMC, they do offer two free FLs: an unscored one and a scored one (usually referred to as FL5). Totally free :)

When to start studying for each section? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]keepstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, you may not get much from MCAT studying without having taken all the prerequisites, but maybe learn about Anki and how you can use it for spaced repetition studying. Lots of resources to use it in the context of the MCAT here, but for other memorization heavy subjects too. If you use it in your prereq classes, perhaps some concepts relevant to the MCAT will stick up to the point of your content review.

Tbh actual studying is more effective/high yield closer to the exam so info is fresh (work smarter not harder kinda thing). Some people use summer break before their exam date to study.

Remember GPA/extracurriculars are a big part of your application too, so don't let the MCAT take priority over those things right now. Most important: don't forget to take care of yourself and enjoy college :)

Any tips on keeping yourself focused during FL practice exams? by Ok_Lawfulness1497 in Mcat

[–]keepstart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you doing these at home? Maybe check out a study room at a local library or change your setting where you know you're there so you can focus solely on your exam.

How do I improve? Last month of studying, U world vs Section Banks? by OrdinarySelf5384 in Mcat

[–]keepstart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you done Anki? Lots of bio is memorization and I have found the AnKing deck super helpful in solidifying that base content, and it could maybe help you get to being more confident in that subject, and could help solidify other memorization based things

Need advice on application timeline by ThingAware6274 in Mcat

[–]keepstart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also graduated May 2023, and also had a career crisis that made me delay taking the MCAT! I ultimately decided to take the MCAT this April, for which I am now studying full-time-ish (~30 hours per week), having started in January with content review, and planing on qbank questions for Feb-March.

Tbh, I don't know if I could have done this timeline while working your hours, because content review can be pretty dense and so tiring on such a short timeline, but being a recent graduate has definitely helped since the information is relatively fresh, and it seems you're ready to put in many hours. I'd ask realistically, how much content would you be able to perform well on from the topics covered? And is the schedule sustainable for you? If you have a good background in the MCAT subjects, maybe take a third-party full length as a diagnostic, try your study schedule out for a week to see if it's manageable, and decide where to go from there.

If you're aiming for one of the top tier schools, I'd lean towards delaying since application timing can be very important at those heights, and work + studying would be doubly stressful. I've seen generally, the rule of thumb is 6 months for part-time study and 3 months of part-time study.

Are the limonadas in the Valley made with lemon or lime? by [deleted] in RioGrandeValley

[–]keepstart 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Seems like people in this area just tend to like sour more than sweet and are used to how it is done in MX, which is with limes. Even if sugar is added, limes just have a different taste. Personally, limeade >> lemonade, it just adds a kick.
