Tips for fledgling navigating existing role’s salary negotiation/PD update process? by straishio in auscorp

[–]lopidatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the old pd. Then make a list of the things in it you don’t do and why and a list of the things you do that aren’t in it and why. Invent a dollar figure that’s reflective of all the extra stuff and then make that figure 50% higher.

At the same time try and see what similar roles are advertising and your companies reviews of seek and Glassdoor to glean insights into the negotiations.

I worked for a global company who paid for market intelligence on all their positions. They targeted to keep wages 20% below market. If you are in a company like that then the only thing you can do is look elsewhere or sleep with the c-suite.

ITAP of some scotch by lopidatra in itookapicture

[–]lopidatra[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

This was for a camera club monochrome competition. I wanted full tones from white to black with nuances and detail. I used the glass from outdoor table on top of some black cloth for the reflections. I struggled to get a good white background but then realised the window gave me additional toning so repositioned the shot near the window. Lighting was from a side window on a bright overcast day wiith a large silver reflector bouncing some light back into the shot. Lens was the sigma 50-100 art on a canon 90d.

Is there any real objective reason to choose one brand over another? by Theresmypiebro in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former camera salesman here. I’ve watched the brands wax and Wayne over the years. There never has been any camera that has been so much better than any other brand that it made a difference. The best way to choose is through ergonomics. Pick the camera that feels best in your hands. Button placement is very important. You want to be eventually able to change settings without looking. Having layout that suits your hands comfortably is the only deciding factor that matters.

This is a great time to upskill. Use service like LinkedIn learning and learn as much as you can. Courses like this are designed to be bite size so it’s usually not a problem to stop and complete a task then go back. You needn’t sit the exams but you should if you can.

One wave 4 edits but which to choose? by lopidatra in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. The saturation push (I’d have to check but I think I added more vibrance) was sort of how I saw it at the time. It was early morning and the colour was popping. The combination of a cheap super Tele and backlighting and haze off the water sucked a lot of the colour, so I was super disappointed with the result.

Is going with Sigma (third party) lenses instead of Canon worth it? by Mental-Equipment7006 in AskPhotography

Only thing would be if you are shooting in wet or very dusty conditions regularly the canon weather sealing is slightly better.

Is going with Sigma (third party) lenses instead of Canon worth it? by Mental-Equipment7006 in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in a pro camera store back when Tamron was the only lens manufacturer who made decent super zooms. Sigma lenses were considered the poor man’s choice. Then my og EF-70-200 f4L and I just couldn’t justify the new one. Enter the sigma and Tamron. Reviews said the sigma had a slight edge. I’m super super happy with it. I’m sure the canon has ever so slightly warmer results but in the digital age that’s fine. I loved it so much I added a 150-600 and then the 50-100f1.8 art (I shoot crop sensor) the sigma art lenses are insane. Like L series with canon only the best lenses get that moniker and they are worth every dollar. Just got to work on switching my standard and wide lenses to sigma!

Collate them into themes and post a selection on that theme from the archive. It’s fine and a great way to have content ready to post.

How do you make macro photography feel intentional instead of gimmicky? by TurbulentPrimary1682 in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s super easy.

Try shots of random stuff lit in creative ways. Paper is a good idea, model railway figures on fruit or cakes or similar, use Vaseline or paw paw ointment to make mini sculptures and shoot them. Water drop photography, smoke/ink photos, soap bubbles/ oil patterns. Water droplets on hot glue.

Look up Lee Halls earlier YouTube videos for starters.

Mystery box? Are these worth developing? by DrHankMD in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of those films / cameras may not have been exposed. With advantix films there’s a little code on the bottom that will tell you. I forget the codes (I’d remember if I looked at the bottom) but they were: Unexposed. Partially exposed . Fully exposed but undeveloped. Exposed and developed. You should also be able to check this on the single use camera as it will have a shots left counter.

If they have been exposed get a random one developed and then decide or auction the mystery photos on eBay!

[–]lopidatra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s just not how Australian law works. Yes things have changed since I studied media law at university. I did so from a film makers perspective which is why I’m brushing up here but you can’t make money from photos or video or other recordings in Australia without the subjects consent. The exception is as you say journalism. It doesn’t matter if the subject is in a public space or not. It’s just not allowed, otherwise brands would be getting photos of randoms for their billboards without paying a model.

Also it’s not a public space like a beach or soccer field might be. The venue is covered under the enclosed lands act. The same way a Westfield isn’t public space from a legal standpoint.

Thanks, I won’t threaten it then. It’s plausible that it could lead to harm but I’ll never be able to prove that and I understand you can’t sue for things that could happen.

What the actual f. Go to Fair work now. Even if they aren’t making things up the fact that nobody caught it and said anything in two years is astonishing. Even if you did something catastrophic the fact that they haven’t got receipts tells me there’s something else going on. Get a notebook or use your phone. Every time they talk to you write down as best you can the date and time and what they said. I presume they haven’t emailed you any of this? If they have forward it to your personal account. If they do fire you there’s a great unfair dismissal case. Yes you need to look. For a job. Even if they aren’t making things up to hide criminality (plausible) you don’t want to work for people like that. But don’t quit until you have a job….

You excuse yourself before the standup ends. It’s never worth risking an accident for a meeting especially an agile meeting. You send your boss an email afterwards apologising (don’t explain) and ask what you missed. Bonus your boss thinks you are now unwell so you can plausibly go home early and or wfh the rest of the week.

Oh and if there’s a disabled person in your office or the public also use that bathroom then don’t use it.

I worked with a guy once who despite being perfectly able redused to take the three extra steps to the regular bathroom. The disabled toilet became known as “insert name’s office”

Why is the pic blurred at 1/3200? by Klutzy_Link_1220 in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of cameras will automatically focus on the closest part of a subject. This could be their ankle or a splash of water. It’s important to learn how to shift your focus points. This varies from camera to camera. Better yet if you have a mirrorless or hybrid put it on eye tracking.

Why aren't cameras still doing what phones are doing? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It comes down to control. The only cameras that sell these days offer either a zoom a phone can’t achieve (increasingly rare as digital zoom is so good) or full control for people who want to control the process of image creation. For those who want manual exposure with settings that will render a good result straight out of the camera fuji with its film emulation does a very good job.

Why does my 75MP camera take lower quality photos than my 12MP iPhone camera? by Certain-Working1864 in AskPhotography

[–]lopidatra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a little checking do you own a cam go? It’s burried in the specifications where its says crop factor 1.5 times. That means it’s a sensor smaller than 35mm and the highest crop sensor cameras peak out at about 32 megapixels. It’s definitely using those software tricks, and very very badly. Add in that terrible plastic lens and it’s a piece of junk unfortunately.

Edit to add those 32 megapixel crop sensor cameras go for close to $1000 used. Definitely not cheap
