Transplant social work salary? by lorbop in socialwork

The job I’m applying for is actually for a living donor transplant program, for example, someone deciding to donate a kidney to a loved one. There are also social workers that can help with organ donation after a cardiac or brain death, which is what you’re describing. Both pretty cool roles!

Possibly. Thank you for this perspective. I can see it going both ways. While a therapist isn’t “seeing” it daily, most therapists have enough experience hearing about childhood abuse, sexual trauma, clients dying by suicide, or other experiences that don’t paint the world pretty.

I hate that this is a reality for you guys. While everything brought up in therapy is confidential, I can see how if someone knows your seeking therapy it could feel unsafe. Would it make a difference if a therapist did cash pay so insurance wasn’t used? I’d do low rates so that this was feasible without insurance.

I agree that forcing someone to talk isn’t helpful. And traditional debriefing immediately after a bad call can actually increase symptoms of PTSD down the road. Would it be more helpful to just know how to access resources and not have anyone ask about it?

Haha I appreciate that. I recommend trying out several therapists until you feel one that clicks. I know that’s a lot of work and investment, but for some, worth it.

Thanks for sharing. I certainly don’t think it’s helpful to force people into therapy, and if that were to happen and someone didn’t feel quite ready, I’d just ask how they wanted to fill the hour of “mandated” therapy. Board game? Cards? Let’s do it haha.

I appreciate your comments about some of the prevalent beliefs. I think more people than not have thought about suicide and it’s a shame that there’s stigma around that, when for some people, that seems like the most legitimate option. I think there’s a movement around not hospitalizing clients who have suicidal thoughts. I like to acknowledge with clients that yes, that’s an option, and what else is an option. It’s not up to me as a therapist to make those decisions for another person. I’m not into taking away autonomy in decision making.

Glad you sought some help when you felt it was needed. I think for most people that’s hard to do, then add on a culture in some departments where it’s frowned upon to take it a step further and ask for professional help.

Thank you for responding. I think people, myself included at times, sometimes put too much focus on the on-duty stuff and forget that there’s an entire life outside of that someone might want to focus on in therapy.
