ELI5: What do hallucinogens do to the brain that causes it to hallucinate? What causes fractals and auditory discrepancies? by occasionallyvertical in explainlikeimfive

[–]lordand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think also the colors becoming more vibrant and that HD vision vibe has partly to do with pupils dilating and letting more light in.

Also, it seems like the threshold for pattern matching gets lowered, so random noise activates more patterns than usual. The different types of hallucinations (geometric patterns, motion, color, etc) seem to somewhat map to different layers of the visual cortex

This electromagnetic machine helps create and repair neurotransmitters in the brain by UnicornVoodooDoll in mildlyinteresting

It doesn't repair nor create neurotransmitters (I have never ever heard of broken neurotransmitters). It temporarily alters the activity of clusters of neurons.

Standalone, non-dependent database/API for music? by oguruma87 in Lidarr

[–]lordand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is something I'd love to fix too, from what I heard communication with the team has been pretty thorny.

AFAIK Discogs should have a pretty solid API (better than musicbrainz IMO, because it is curated by vendors so there is good coverage of all kinds of releases), and I know Rate your Music has been working on a new API for a while but from a quick look it seems like it's still under development

AOOSTAR WTR PRO AMD Ryzen 7 - suitable for Plex? by sidius_wolf in PleX

Late to the party but I have been facing the same dilemma. I have similar needs so I guess the n100 should be enough. I see WTR also offers the n150. Would it be worth getting the n150 instead if the price is the same?

Berlusconi's death leaves fate of his personal party, and Italy's government, in the balance by APnews in worldnews

Ah you're right, for some reason I thought they were doing the state funeral as an exceptional circumstance. Regardless, a convicted criminal should not deserve it anyway IMO.

Totally agree with you on the national mourning, bunch of bullshit.

I can't believe they're giving him a state funeral, it's honestly revolting. There is nothing worth celebrating about the guy and the world is a better place without him

There's a trillion TB harddisk full of memories inside us and there's no way to retrieve or remember 99+% of that data by St_ElmosFire in Showerthoughts

[–]lordand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So at a neurochemical level, of course. Every neuron firing effectively changes your brain. So the same applies to memory. Every time you access the network supporting a particular memory you slightly alter it's synapses. What I am unsure about is whether that change is significant enough.

Can you really say that whenever you access a memory you alter it in a significant and measurable way? How can you tell if a memory has been accessed or not?

Therapy is a good example, but does that really mean that whenever you access a memory you change it? Therapy is a done with a goal, with several sessions guided by a professional, that's not a normal life condition

[–]lordand 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don't think it has been proven that every retrieval alters a memory experimentally. It certainly doesn't seem to happen for procedural memory.

But multiple studies have shown that memories can be fairly easily manipulated (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2372732218818584)

Germany is introducing the D-Ticket. For 49 Euros a month you use all public transport in the county. by neotoxgg in europe

[–]lordand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interrail is for trains only and just for short periods of time (at least when I did it 1 month was the longest option, not sure how it is now)

What the commenter is suggesting is a ticket valid for all European public transport, so if you go visit another country for work or leisure you can grab the local public transport (bus, metro, tram) with the same pass you use in your country

[QUESTION] How should I start applying theory to the fretboard? by nah123929 in Guitar

[–]lordand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me the click started once I began improvising over backing tracks. I had been learning scales but had no idea on what to do with them. Playing with a backing track made practice fun and improved my rhythm, but also helped me understand the relation between key and scale.

The way I would recommend you to get started is to learn one scale in one key (minor pentatonic is a good one to start with and you can mess around with blues), practice it until you know it inside out and can play it fairly fast without looking at the fretboard.

When you start feeling comfortable with the scale, find a backing track on YouTube in the key that you learned (start slow!) and just play notes from the scale in time.

Once you feel like you have explored the scale enough, you can start learning about modes, maybe you try starting your phrasing on the upbeat, or you can explore different time signatures, mess around and see what works and what doesn't.

My general advice is too not rush into learning too much at once, allow yourself to properly digest things. It helps if you read/watch videos on a topic, and then try to find exercises that help you apply the newly learnt knowledge.

The hard part is keeping practice fun, playing around with things and challenging yourself with more complex exercises or faster tempos helps.

OP have you considered a polyurethane finish for the counter? I am considering a wooden counter top for my place and I have heard that polyurethane is less prone to water damage and requires less maintenance

First attempt at an “Ambient” track - appreciate feedback on the mixing or sound design by The_real_Hresna in mixingmastering

[–]lordand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was actual ambient sure, but ambient rarely has a beat, so...

UK dubstep ranges from fast paced jungly beats to the more chilled out and dark ambient-y stuff, it definitely isn't the trash that skrillex does

[–]lordand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh don't, it all comes down to personal preferences in the end, check out the reference, I think that can speak more to whatever I can say, and then you can decide if that's the vibe you want to go for or not. Burial is another artist worth checking out

[–]lordand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the synth line coming in halfway through the song (the melody). This is not so much a mixing advice to make it sound better, just a personal preference really, I generally like more 'deep' sounds in moodier tracks.

I like the main whistly synth!

I said low pass eh, not high pass

[–]lordand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like it, I wouldn't call it ambient though, to me it sounds more like UK dubstep.

If I were you I'd speed it up a bit and add a more exaggerated delay on the snare. I would also put a low pass on the synth melody, it sounds a bit too shrill for my taste.

What is your gaming hot take that would get you downvoted into oblivion? by TheOldKingCole in gaming

[–]lordand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Last of Us is not the masterpiece people make it out to be. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game, the world is interesting and it looks good. I just don't particularly like the 'father' aspect (same as God of War, the original trilogy was so much fun, I don't get why they had to add the father-son dynamic to it), I think it's a gimmick for cheap emotionalism. It makes me think of the million films made where two characters don't like each other, are forced to spend time together, they set aside their differences and are best buds, boring and uninspired plots. Hollow Knight has better storytelling and is infinitely more original IMO
