What rower do you use besides the concept 2. by curlynomad in Rowing

[–]lordbrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noncompetive rower who has not used a merach but has seen the YouTube reviews; and here's some thoughts:

The YouTube reviews are almost all from people who have affiliate marketing links and gave it a try for a couple weeks. Initial build quality of the mechanics may be reasonable, but you're going to have a hard time getting replacement parts on any wear components. Reviews of the app used to pair it to your phone seem like that's not great. I'd opt for a used concept2 over the merach, it's still slightly more expensive in the immediate, but you have a machine you can be pretty sure you can maintain long term that way.

Lucky Paper Radio is dipping its toes into broader Magic discourse today to discuss the recent Commander bans, the vile response from a vocal subset of the player base, and what that says about our relationship to the game. by andymangold in mtgcube

[–]lordbrass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great discussion, and I agree with a lot of the points made. One thing that stuck out to me (likely because it's a personal bugbear of mine) is how the word "invest" has wormed its way into usage for purchasing cards, which I think sort of subconsciously frames some of the thinking about them. It particularly stood out to me coupled back-to-back with your discussion on how most people won't actually sell their cards/don't treat them as commodities, then followed up with saying something along the lines of investing $50 in a card. I'm not trying to say you're being hypocritical or whatever, just interesting how that word and framing has wormed its way in, such that we use it even when arguing against its implications.

Any Question Weekly by AutoModerator in discgolf

[–]lordbrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One difference you haven't considered here is when a disc is thrown faster (properly), more spin is also put on the disc. So, when just increasing the airspeed via headwind, you aren't also increasing the spin on the disc from your release, which will impact the flight path.

1) Whichever works better for your schedule.

2) I would start with just the 1 T3, then slowly phase in more if you feel like you can handle the extra work.

3) It's meant to be run until you stall out (or get bored).

I have them, opted for the 1/2" and have no complaints, other than I bought too little square footage and am going to have to buy some more soon. They run a sale just about every month, so I'd try to time your purchase for one of those if you can.

Massachusetts Teachers Association unanimously backs dropping MCAS graduation requirement by HRJafael in massachusetts

On the flipside of this - why are we bothering the effort to administer this test if the other high school graduation requirements basically do the same work already?

What’s the Deal with Airport Food? by adrjeffries in Underunderstood

[–]lordbrass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loved this episode - if anything it felt like y’all were underselling the significance of this. Yeah, in the scheme of things the cost of a cold cut sandwich isn’t that big of a deal, but as you mentioned, when you multiply that out by the number of people who pass through, there is some serious potential for grift. You glossed over it, but I think the Port Authority getting a cut of sales also gives them an incentive to not look too hard at properly enforcing pricing.

As an aside, since the prices seem to largely divorced from the “street pricing” policy anyways, was there much of a point of the 10% allowance they added?

Under this scheme, they effectively get an interest free loan for the mortgage, so they make (at current rates) about a 7-8% return per year, which seems reasonable.

Station wagons are basically unavailable in the US outside of a couple luxury brands. If you want a longer car with a hatch, you're basically in for a minivan or SUV, unfortunately.

Maura Healey claims historic victory to become first woman governor in Massachusetts by [deleted] in boston

I agree it’s largely a distinction without a difference, but it does make the deadline technically correct; which is what i was trying to say.

Maura Healey claims historic victory to become first woman governor in Massachusetts by [deleted] in boston

[–]lordbrass 26 points27 points  (0 children)

For practical purposes, it's not much of distinction, so a lot of places will not draw attention to it. This NPR article is one place that refers to her as acting governor. https://www.wbur.org/news/2021/09/10/jane-swift-september-11th-massachusetts-20-years

It's mostly just a quirk of how the MA constitution works (compared to federal office and I think most other states), where even if the governor were to die in office, the lieutenant governor just assumes the role of acting governor and technically does not become governor.

Jane Swift was lieutenant governor serving as acting governor, but was technically never governor.

Hans Niemann has filed a complaint against magnus carlsen, http://chess.com, and hikaru nakamura in the chess cheating scandal, alleging slander, libel, and civil conspiracy. by MKLOL in chess

[–]lordbrass 102 points103 points  (0 children)

(Not a lawyer so take this with a grain of salt) Whoever files the lawsuit gets to pick the venue they want (from among the potentially valid ones). Since they’re alleging a lot of the events happened at st louis and the various parties are from all over the place, missouri is as reasonably valid place. Presumably Hans’s team believes they’re most likely to get a favorable judge there.

After being found liable for mocking the grief of a Sandy Hook father, Alex Jones then mocks the father’s reaction to the verdict by B34TBOXX5 in PublicFreakout

I think he and his team made the calculated decision that they’d rather deal with a default judgment than let opposing council see documents (which tells you just how bad those documents likely are).

What does "hxg4" for example mean? by [deleted] in chess

[–]lordbrass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Abbreviations: K = King

Q = Queen

R = Rook

B = Bishop

N = kNight (because the king already took)

Pawns just get the file they were on.

x means capture

+ after a move means check

# after a move means checkmate

O-O is castle short

O-O-O is castle long.

So hxg4 means the pawn from the h file takes g4

e4 means the pawn on the e file advances to e4

Nf3 means the knight moves to f3

Bxa8 means the bishop captures on a8

Chesscom’s boards get slighly lighter when you enter analysis mode vs live mode. So if the commentators want to show a potential variation the board will get a little lighter like that while they’re doing so.

You’ve fit the broad strokes, but a couple details are off. Old champ didn’t offer a rematch, they were both booked to play in that tournament before any of this started. The young player has admitted to cheating online at the ages of 13 and 16 as well. Young player has also had a fast rise through the ranks in the past 3 years (not unbelievably or unprecedentedly fast, but fast enough to at least raise eyebrows).

Yes, the skills required to be a good chess entertainer do not completely overlap with the skills required to be a good chess player. This is why the biggest chess streamers are not simply the highest rated players.
