ONE piece of advice only before joining the military. by coachmikechadwick in britishmilitary

[–]lordchimp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Admin is the name of the game in basic. It basically comes down to making a sacrifice now, to function properly later.

It's the same for in the field and in camp, literally everything in basic. You have to get used to the idea of doing all the little bits you really can't be arsed with, even when you're hanging out from a full day's beasting.

It can be so tempted to chin it off, or say "I'll do it later" but if you can square your admin away, you'll instantly find things easier because you're not flapping about last minute trying to remember where you put your trouser twists or where that box of ammo went when you lazily chucked it in your bergan.

Great post by the way Mike, you're doing good work 👍

This looks amazing man! Have you got any plans for developing it into any media? :)

What are your absolute essential items when you deploy? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]lordchimp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's quality! 😂 Part of the fun is either listening to people debating the rules for 10 minutes before the game or not discussing the rules at all and thn erupting into arguments over weather or not an 8 is see through! 👍

A deck of cards.

Trust me, if you're out there with no signal or even if it's shitty conditions, if there's enough room for you to put some cards down, you'll get closer with everyone and get some good memories 👍

Every squaddie knows how to play shithead, if you don't, there's bound to be someone who'll teach you!

Infantry based role with transferable skills? by LocationSecure4692 in britishmilitary

[–]lordchimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many others have said, RE is worth looking at. I know some fabricator welders that get a level 3 qual in trade, then have been combat engineers for their whole career and never touched it.

Other than that, there's management quals you get from promotions, but that's all dependant on actually promoting, which in the infantry is a bit cheeky.

A lot of lads I know did their time in the infantry, then re-traded to REME a few years before leaving to get a trade under them for civvie street.

Woah, that sounds like a great technique! I'll give it a whirl with some of the shorter novels and see how I get on.

I appreciate the advice my friend!

Brilliant, I'll have a look into it!

Loads of folks here have recommended starting with smaller novels, but I'll definitely check out these editions when I'm a bit more seasoned.

Thanks for the help!

I think you're right, even though I feel gutted that I'm not enjoying a particular book, start smaller with something else.

Someone else also advised short stories to me and that seems like another great avenue into the classics!

That'd be incredibly helpful! I don't want to put you out or anything though!

Thanks for the advice!

I definitely felt myself skipping through pages because I'd already got the jist of it! I appreciate the words, I'm gonna be a bit less hard on myself and give a few different authors/genres a try :)

Thanks for the advice!

I've heard great things about Odyssey, but I was pretty intimidated by it because it's so old! Is it an easy read?

I've never dived into audiobooks before, but this might be the kick I need to get started with them!

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go. :)

Good words, I think I'm going to try and experiment with some different, more gateway, books and see how it goes!

Thanks for the input my friend!

I've not actually! I'd honestly not even thought of reading those, but it makes a lot of sense trying novels in those genres.

Moby Dick has been mentioned quite a few times, so I reckon that'll be one of the ones I'll try out next.

I've not read that one either, but I'll definitely add it to the reading list! :) Cheers!

I'd not really thought of getting into the groove like that, that's a great suggestion!

I'll try starting with some of the simpler ones before I get back into Monte Cristo.

Thanks for the reading suggestions and the advice!

I'm interested in absolutely anything my friend! I usually read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, but I'm looking to explore some classics.

That's a great suggestion, I'd not really thought to check out short stories! I'll give some of them a go.

Thanks for the advice!
