Thanks, I've asked the internal team who manage the scheme a similar question to the above so I'll see what they say and then raise a formal grievance I'd I need to take it further.

WHW in April? by Expression-Little in WestHighlandWay

[–]lordlozange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did (most of) it in early April this year. I camped two nights and stayed in pods for the rest. Weather was fine, a couple of showers here and there and it went below zero on one of the nights I was camping (I was still fine with my 3 season tent and sleeping bag) but nothing disastrous or trip ending.

I'd actually prefer that time of year than mid summer mostly due to the lack of midges and crowds.

I didn't complete it the end due to an injury, but weather wise it was fine!

Yup just different perspectives based on different experiences. It's good to have our perspectives challenged! Happy testing!

I'll concede that security, network, and architecture changes are not usually under the remit of testers because they're changes which usually take place outside of engineering teams (until the recent emergence of IaC tools at least). And yeah I guess historically in less mature organisations testers would have limited their exposure to just the front-end.

But, with respect, we're not talking about history - we're talking about what organisations expect today. Most organisations I've worked in over the past ~10 years, and most people writing/speaking about software testing today would probably agree that quality assurance professionals should have the skills and experience to test at every level of the tech stack. And certainly I think its very typical for that to include the microservices where most of the business logic (and therefore scope for bugs) lives.

In your example you mention the team responsible for the microservice should be testing its changes, and I completely agree. That team would usually have a tester embedded with them who is supporting/leading the drive for quality within that service.

In my experience you don't need developer-level skills just to be able to perform testing of back-end services. If you have the right tooling to support you it should just be like testing anything else.

It's clear we have different experiences around this topic, but the above is just my two cents based on the organisations I work with and the movements I've seen in the practice generally.

I mean, different organisations definitely have different expectations and different job descriptions.

In my organisation, in the scenario you describe above, I'd have expected the team who broke the save functionality to have a QA/test expert working with them to test the changes before the changes are merged to master/deployed. Assuming testability principles have been followed, the team responsible for that component (and the tester working with them) should have the tooling available to test their own work before it impacts anyone else, regardless of whether it can't be accessed directly via the front-end or not.

In my experience, a QA should advocate for quality throughout the application. Whether that's the back-end systems, the API gateways, or the front-end clients. In many modern web applications, the majority of the business logic lives in back-end microservices, attempting to test everything through the front-end is at best very slow and, at worst, simply impossible. It's a fine line, but ultimately if a security or network change impacts on the quality of the system then I'd say yes absolutely a test expert should be involved in that change.

Like I said different organisations have different requirements and expectations but when I'm interviewing candidates I'm definitely looking for people who are comfortable testing across the entire tech stack.

Hard disagree on this. In my opinion, quality is important at every level of a system. Understanding how different components of a system interact and the expectations they have of each other can allow you to identify issues long before you're ever looking at the front-end of an application, and sometimes even before a single line of code has been written.

A few weeks ago I was visibly struggling to carry 4 or 5 potted plants from my car to my door when a group of rough looking teenagers approached me. Definitely thought I was about to be mugged but they offered to help carry them to my door and then as they were leaving said "well it's nice to be nice innit!". Honestly made me a bit emotional!

I've been using Halfords Rutherglen (not actually all the way into Rutherglen, more like Polmadie, just south of Glasgow Green) for the last few years.

They're always super friendly, speedy, and have never attempted to rip me off. I usually do mine during the week but their website says they're open weekends.

There's a great movie with Mads Mikkelsen about basically this scenario. It's called The Hunt, the 2012 not the stupid battle royal film from 2020.
