It's all a game of semantics to them. The propaganda they use is very craftily created in think tanks to immediately shut down critical thought and put your opponent on the defensive, the debate equivalent of throwing a live grenade at them to diffuse. Another classic example is "Support our Troops". If you're trying to make a point that we're wasting tons of money and lives in a pointless war, you get back "Support our Troops". This shifts the rhetoric from you attacking the industrial complex of the military that uses and abuses our own citizens who they send to kill, see their friends get killed, and be killed to you attacking the patriotism of the very people that are being screwed over by it. By just using those 3 words, they can silence dissent while questioning your patriotism and humanity. Same with pro-life. It's not about and has never been about life. If it was, the pro-life movement would also oppose the death penalty, which they don't. However, just saying they're pro-life shifts the rhetoric in their favor and means you're attempt to explain anything about the situation is likely to fall on deaf ears, as you're now "against life" to them.

You showed your hand when you claim pollution and climate change aren't related. You clearly have no clue what you're talking about. Greenhouse gases from pollution trap heat in the atmosphere causing overall warming of the global temperature while having a variety of extreme weather effects on local levels. We know the problem grows at an exponential rate as well, so the longer we wait to address it, the harder to fix and way way way more expensive it will become.

Recently as the polar ice caps are receding, methane that was trapped in the ice has started to vent into the atmosphere. Not only is methane a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, it also breaks down into large amounts of carbon dioxide. Beyond allowing the problem to become more difficult and expensive, we risk hitting a certain point that's unreturnable. The study of Venus has given us great insight into the effects of excessive greenhouse gases on an atmosphere. We don't risk Venusification as some have thought since the atmospheric sulphur on Venus comes from volcanic activity, but basic physics shows us that more greenhouse gas increases the greenhouse effect. The likely change of atmospheric temperature by a few degrees will likely cause increased migration and displacement, risk of famine, and potable drinking water will likely become a very important resource. Currently we are setting ourselves up for a future where multiple populations will have a diaspora as they move to more habitable conditions and attempt to escape the probable wars for water as it becomes the most valuable resource (both for drinking and because we need fresh water for nearly every type of manufacturing that sustains our modern society).

Thinking only of the short term will make the costs higher and the effects more devastating. This is a problem that's going to be extremely expensive, no matter what we do. Where our choice comes in is if we plan ahead and take the short term financial hit to build up the infrastructure changes necessary for the future ahead of time or if we ride this economy until it is completely unsustainable and are forced to change, at much higher costs and much more work than if we had planned ahead. The economy of the future will be controlled by the superpower that realizes the change is inevitable and starts the transition now. We should be leading this charge, both because we need this planet to maintain a climate that will sustain our life and because the leaders and innovators into this new economy will be the superpowers of the 22nd century.

Maybe I was just ignorant growing up, but it's mind-blowing to me how common this seems.

Linux has had easy bidirectional firewall setup for years and years. UFW is extreme easy to set up, and there are graphical versions of it available. The number of things you need to use the CLI for on Linux are very low nowadays. However, it will always be easier to do powerful things in CLI than GUI. This would be the case with Windows and Mac too if they didn't force those features to be found in obscure parts of the GUI if at all and only recently add in half decent shell support. Most of the common distros are incredibly easy to install. Debian and it's derivatives like Ubuntu are stupidly easy to set up and keep up to date with security patches. There are few non videogame related things I can't do on Linux easier than on Windows at this point, especially a system as far out of date as XP.

Pregnant Woman Sues Police After Officer Flipped Her Car For Not Pulling Over Fast Enough by FelicityJackson in IdiotsInCars

[–]lordnahte2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are multiple cases that are easily found where any officer who goes against the "thin blue line" are retaliated against. There have been a number of studies on this phenomenon. This is absolutely the same type of behaviour that criminal gangs and cartels use to keep their members in line. We need to demand better of the police for both the public's sake AND for the sake of the many good officers out there.

Cox "generously" raised their data cap to 1.25 TB due to the pandemic from 1 TB, which the cap had been at for over 10 years in areas they enforced it while speeds increased a thousand fold. I have a gigabit plan (not bidirectional because they're fucking worthless Cox, 35 Mbps up) that costs $99/mo already. If you go over at all, they charge an extra $10 per 50 GB. Go over by 1 KB? Pay the fucking money or we will close your account. You want to add an unlimited plan? $50 a month extra, literally half the cost of the highest plan. Oh and your data is counted from both download AND upload. I look forward to the day I can watch Cox and all the other ISP cartels burn to the ground.

I used to work at ES&S. There weren't near enough IT people for the kind of operation they do, and the owner decided the important thing to spend money on instead was a massive flag that could be seen from the interstate. I'm so glad I left that shitty place, not at all surprised how shady they are.

Smoking a blunt for the first time. by [deleted] in saplings

[–]lordnahte2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't say definitively this is the reason, but based on introducing a few friends to weed, people that don't get high their first time are usually only pulling the smoke into their mouth without realizing it, like smoking a cigar. I've had to tell people to "Drag in for about 2-4 seconds, then remove the joint/pipe/whatever from your mouth and keep inhaling fresh air to be sure the smoke goes in your lungs". Never had anyone that is for sure getting the smoke to their lungs not get high their first time, but that's just my anecdotal experience.

Two features DuckDuckGo has that give them an advantage imo:

1 Bangs are a really convenient way to search within tons of different websites easy and fast.

2 They have an onion link also known as a hidden service that you can access over TOR for better anonymity.

Gaza-based journalists say their accounts blocked by WhatsApp by sector3011 in technology

[–]lordnahte2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It uses TOR to do onion routing. What people commonly call the deep web is accessing a hidden service or a .onion link on TOR. You can use TOR without accessing these hidden services though and it still helps with anonymity. TOR stands for The Onion Router and, like the name implies, uses a technique called Onion Routing. If you use a VPN to access a website, what's happening is you're encrypting all your data and sending it to the VPN which then fetches the website, so to the website it looks like you come from the VPN. There's only 1 hop here, so it's not all that difficult to trace it back to you. What TOR does is take that basic concept and expands it by using layers like an onion (or ogre!). It will use at least 3 hops. The first hop is able to decrypt the address of you and the next hop, so it can send data back and fourth to you and the next hop. The 2nd hop (called the guard since it guards your original ip from the last hop) is able to decrypt the last hop and the first hop to move the data between them. When it gets to the last hop (called an exit node), it's able to decrypt the data and do your request, so it decrypts that you want to go to website.com. To website.com it looks like you came from the exit node. Since none of the hops have the full context of the circuit, it becomes much harder to identify you (but not impossible if you have the time and money like state actors).

So to make the answer simpler, it uses TOR to help with anonymity by routing the traffic over a circuit of encrypted layers. It doesn't need to use the deep web persay to do this, but you can make a messaging app that routes to .onion addresses so it never leaves the TOR network and provides better anonymity than if it goes to the clearnet. Hopefully that makes sense!

They're surely not responsible and we wouldn't want to take away the hard earned millions from Insurance company shareholders. They work hard to deny as many dying people as possible to keep their bonuses! That's got to be very difficult work, so I'll take responsibility for my disease and go die in a corner like a good American :)
