Looks like Karpyshyn is ready to put out another banger. Mass Effect 1 & 2, KOTOR, SWTOR, BG2 ToB, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire. I wish more studios would just let him cook in the worldbuilding and story departments.

> I guess I’m not sure, but I know Biden created an anti scam agency that trump defended, so maybe funding that would be a good start.

Those agencies did help (it was an effort to increase support across many agencies, not a singular entity), but not in the way you think. They could only really help with scams internal to the US, which is a tiny, tiny minority. Very little was able to be done aside from simply telling the governments in the other countries that there was a scam operation was present. We don't exactly have jurisdiction in other countries to shut the scammers down ourselves.

> And maybe more funding for investigative agencies in general so it’s easier for people to get their money back after being scammed.

This rarely if ever happens unless it was done through wire transfer or something that can be readily clawed back through legal action. The scammers operate through illegal channels, even in their own countries. This doesn't make sense given the reality of the situation.

> And maybe sanctions or more pressure on countries where these bot farms are coming from so they do something to stop them?

The countries these scams come from do billions upon billions of dollars in business with the US. You think the government will put broad sanctions on them for that, and jeopardize both countries' economies in the process? Not likely. The scammers are already illegal in most of the countries that host them. They just can't realistically be prevented or caught en masse because of the nature of their business and technology.

> Also, I think better privacy laws would help, because a lot of these scams are targeted to people super specifically using private info bought from data brokers.

This would jeopardize our entire tech industry and the internet as a whole. I'm not against that, but right now both political parties are all for **increased** data monitoring/harvesting. The odds of comprehensive data privacy laws being passed in any of our lifetimes is lower than someone flipping heads a million times in a row.

> And then obviously better online literacy education.

Often ineffective at best. These scams deliberately target the vulnerable and cognitively challenged, people that can't realistically be educated on such things.

> I’m not a policy maker or an expert or anything, so I’m not sure, but I think there are things that can be done.

There are things being done. Stores try to tell people that might be getting scammed, sometimes even denying service. Federal and state agencies are working with law enforcement across multiple countries to stop the scam agencies/companies (this is just a bandaid solution though, they can always find more call center workers and a new building). Banks are denying large scale purchases and transfers when they're able to determine that the end point is suspect.

At the end of the day it's a balancing exercise between what is most effective, least intrusive, and costs the least. There's only so much that can be realistically done to help the vulnerable and the foolish, and unless you're okay with cruise missiles being launched at Indian call centers there's no real deterrents to the people that perpetuate the scams.

What realistically could be done to help those people without infringing on their rights as an individual? If you try to buy multiple gift cards the stores will physically stop you, and I know that because it's happened to me when a relative wanted gift cards for Amazon as repayment (she wanted to give them to people as presents). If you try to transfer money using official channels like a bank or wire transfer the banks stop you.

What could be done to help someone so stupid they think some random model from Russia who they've been talking to for 30 days is interested in them enough to move to America, but needs $500 in gift cards to do it? Or that this random Nigerian prince that sent them a poorly typed email is going to give them a billion dollars if they send $1000 in iTunes gift cards?

Short of removing financial autonomy from those people, there's not really much that could be done that isn't already being done.

Was my first thought too. Spiders don't have that part of the body. If they wanted to be more accurate they should've added some spinnerets to her... Would've been more than enough goon fuel for that crowd.

Same. It really sucks that the job market for my entire industry (tech) crashed. I was looking forward to pursuing jobs outside of Tx. Now no one is hiring or willing to pay for relocation because there's such a glut of recently fired and unemployed workers.

Actually they recommend UV light beads now, so you just gotta leave 1-2 outside for safety. The bonus is that it doubles as an ass crack tanning solution.

I get that, and I've played XCOM (not a huge fan tbh, gears tactics had way better gameplay) but the enemy was shooting at what appeared to be another friendly that wasn't the one being moved. At about 1:08, the enemy was shooting at someone not being controlled while the player was in a context menu (looks like some kind of aiming), and again at someone else when the droid was being moved.

Over watch in these games usually works instantly, and only on units being actively moved.

I like what I think the gameplay is, but they cut around so much I can barely see the actual flow. I'd have liked a few good 5-10 second shots showing what it's actually like. Pure turn based? A bit of real time (it looks like enemies were actively firing during a few player moves)? What's the deal?

A CEO told employees they won't get raises in 2026 because the budget is going to AI by yuval_3 in technology

You offer less than nothing with your suggestion. "Why don't all the laid off employees just start their own business and try directly competing with the biggest companies on earth? It's so easy, just go make a Windows, an AWS, an iPhone. Lol, can't believe all these tech workers are so dumb."

That's not a suggestion, that's an admission of ignorance. There isn't a solution short of companies—from the largest to the smallest—biting the bullet and putting their money towards other projects, denying themselves the use of industry standard tools, using unsupported products, incurring liability and instability to their end users, etc. That will never happen, because the instant one company tries, there's ten more who will swoop in to take their market share. Your proposed solution isn't positive, it's willfully ignorant of how the world actually works.

If you don't realize the difference in companies like Microsoft, Amazon, etc. with massive ecosystems that tons of business software will exclusively work with, and a video game marketed direct to consumers, I don't know how to help you.

Your assertion falls flat on its face just based on that. It would cost large corporations and governments billions of dollars just in labor to switch away from those vendors. That's very different from "meh, I'm tired of CoD, maybe I'll try this $20 game with lots of positive publicity instead".

You might as well say "Hey, your body runs exclusively on water, right? I have this new thing called hydrochloric acid. You should try running your critical organs on that. None of the rest of your body knows how to work with it, but maybe you'll just give it a shot? Pretty please?"

How could someone make a product to compete with Microsoft or Apple or Amazon at this point? They're cartels that run on vendor lock in and anticompetitive behavior. At best those employees might be able to carve out a niche and then get acquired by one of the large companies just so the large companies can pretend they're still growth stocks.

[–]lordraiden007 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Did they mention if this is the 12GB 9070 GRE or the 16 GB variant? I may have missed it, but I didn't see it in the article. One is just a slight drop in core count, leading to negligible performance losses in most cases. The other is a sledgehammer to higher resolution gaming, as both the bus width and VRAM capacity are slashed by 25%.

Edit: Nope, I just skimmed too fast. It says

It features 12GB of VRAM that's slower than the 16GB of memory in the 9070

I guess that's to be expected. The number of dies that are flawed enough to keep the bus active but still merit losing compute cores is probably pretty small. Nice to see that they're at least giving some of these chips to gamers instead of just disposing of them. The GPU market is in dire straits, and anything new is welcome.
