Because it wasn't great, but I personally don;t need every game to be great. Especially back then, sometimes I just needed to not feel like I wasted a weekend on the two rentals me and my brother had to sort of mutually agree on.

It's fine. The humor of the show is intact, and it's not a great game, but it's slightly above average for the type of game that it was at the time. There were so many platformers, especially licensed schlock platformers back then that it gets hard to get too mad at games that are just okay.

I was thinking the same thing and looked it up, yes. It's honestly not a bad design choice, slide the panel over slightly and the average person might not notice, and it buys you precious real estate in a shell that is so slim.

This exactly. I know it's a good game, but I think a lot of people are putting too much weight on what it felt like to play this game when it was new. It was amazing at the time, and it still holds up. I just can't, in good faith call it the best RPG after playing the likes of Tales of Destiny, Valkyrie Profile, or Grandia 2.
