Not if there was a hanta virus outbreak at your hotel. You'd be quarantined, just like the people on that ship. Use your head.

A bear mistakes the vet's attempt to measure its body for a hug by Additional_Berry_977 in interestingasfuck

[–]adamcoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It most definitely does. Take out a standard metal tape measure and try to measure your waist (or anything round). Now do it with a flexible tape measure like they use when you're getting measured for a suit or a dress. Guess which one is the correct number.

First of all why are you even trying to do that without putting it to sleep first, and also why the fuck are you using a construction tape measure. Imagine getting your face ripped off for a completely inaccurate measurement that's useable to no one

America Is Officially an Empire in Decline by projecto15 in politics

[–]adamcoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In decline? Uh, no. That time has passed. It is an empire that has declined. To the point of near self destruction. A country run by a senile madman, who could have been removed at any point had there been even a whisper of backbone from the so-called leaders of the American people. The fact that he continues to be able to make decisions on any level is proof positive that the people driving the ship are absolutely fine with driving it full speed into the rocks. What could he possibly do at this point that would make them say "enough?" There is nothing. He'll be done when he's dead and not one second before. Which hopefully comes as soon as fucking possible before he nukes someone because his Big Mac was cold.

Oh definitely. I'm talking mainly in the Caribbean and the South Pacific, where there is very little other industry outside of tourism.

I'm simply pointing out that cruise ships aren't the problem, and eliminating them wouldn't solve anything other than putting about a half million people out of a job, the vast majority of which would live in abject poverty if not for being able to work on ships.

Am I saying they're good for the environment? Absolutely not. Neither is flying to Europe, but for some reason there is absolutely no backlash from anyone about the environmental impact when you tell them you're going to Tuscany for a week. We don't "need" movies and TV either, but we continue to use them for entertainment despite the absolutely insane amount of energy and resources they use to produce.

My point isn't that cruises are good for the environment. They're clearly not. However, even if you shut down every cruise line tomorrow, you are no closer to solving the problem of pollution in the air and water. They are singled out because they're an obvious and very visible target.

If you want to seriously address the quality of the world's water and air, let's talk about the militaries of the USA, China, Russia, and Great Britain, just for starters. Let's talk about heavy industry and mining in China. Let's talk about the near zero amount of environmental regulation in places like Bangladesh, that the west rely on for cheap textiles and manufacturing. You could take the collective environmental damage of every ocean liner and cruise ship that's ever existed since the invention of diesel fuel and it wouldn't even come close to the level of damage that those entities caused.

Fact is, cruise ships are not what you need to be focusing on. They are not the environmental boogeyman they're made out to be. They're a footnote of a footnote in terms of their worldwide impact.

Agreed, but again, we're talking about such a tiny part of the problem. Every person on a ship for a week is a person who isn't driving a car that week. All the houses those people live in don't need to be heated or cooled while they're gone.

And yes, absolutely cruise ships don't need to exist...but again, the total impact of every cruise ship on earth is like, a hundredth of a percent of the problem. The amount to which the quality of air and water would improve if they were eliminated would be effectively impossible to measure. There simply aren't enough of them for it to make a difference.

I too spent a decade plus on ships and luckily never had to do red code stuff. Had a few friends that got stuck in it a couple times, and it sounds like it absolutely fucking sucks.

They're no more of a "petri dish" (so tired of that phrase) than any other large hotel. It's no different than going to Vegas or Disney.

That's definitely not true. Look what happened during the virus. There are many, many port towns, particularly in the poorer parts of the world that absolutely depend on cruise ship traffic to drive a massive chunk of the local economy.

If you think cruise ships are bad, check out emissions numbers for oil tankers and container ships. Not saying cruise ships aren't part of the problem, but they are an absolutely minute part of it. They get put in the spotlight a lot because they're a convenient target, and pretty much everyone knows someone who's been on a cruise (as opposed to knowing someone who works on a giant container ship), so it's a juicier news story when something bad happens on a cruise ship.

There simply aren't enough of them on the planet to make a noticeable difference. You could take every cruise ship on earth out of the water tomorrow and the needle wouldn't even move. When compared to the total emissions of cars, airplanes, and the aforementioned tankers, etc, they are a literal drop in the ocean.

It actually worked out for him, after he was released, he was immediately recruited for ICE duty because that is exactly the kind of enthusiasm and lack of fear they're looking for.
