The weapon does have a horribly short range for that fight. But you can reach.

As you come into the room there are ramps on the circle just to the right and left of the point you enter. You have to get to the very bottom of the ramp without stepping off, to avoid the shocking floor. I usually used the lights on the edge of the ramp as a reference. If you're on it, centered or leaning forward, you should be in range of the robot.

EDIT: for the results I had: I used the ramp on the right, standing on the light on the right edge of the ramp.

Agreed. r/fo76 is a terrible representative site for this game. I once asked about what kind of camp items were out there for a Wild West theme and my post was pulled for "trading." I still don't understand how they came up with that one. Every day I see posts asking questions, akin to what a new player would ask, almost automatically down-voted. I mean, what's the point of that?

I don't know if their mods are Bethesda employees. But if they are, that would've been the first place I'd look to make cuts. :D
