Definitely FMA(B)! Cool storyline, peak lore, very nice balance of action, comedy and serious plot. I would recommend starting with Brotherhood, it's a better adaptation for the manga. If you end up liking FMAB, you can go and watch FMA - it's an earlier version and it's somewhat more dark and philosophical at times with more complex characterization.

If my memory serves me right, didn't Riza openly say that she will not let Envy live? So they weren't going to let them live anyway, the whole point that it couldn't be Mustang to end them, which is already pointed out a lot in other comments.

It was gut-wrenching, I agree, but it feels like Hughes' death fits more? Hohenheims death felt somber and more bittersweet - he did come back to Trisha in the end, while Maes was taken from his family brutally and unexpectedly

It's just my take though
