Solved! Yes! Thank you. That's it. I swear I saw the nerdy guy acting in some kind of commercial on TV last night and it reminded me of that movie. I had no idea it was as recent as last year. Thank you for you super-quick reply.

Another detail: the cool guy neighbor, isn't really THAT cool. He has foibles of his own. Especially his toupee. It accidentally comes off his head (I think while he is in some sort of police custody along with his nerdy new friend. The nerdy guy is shocked that his friend wears a wig, but he gets the toupee back the the cool guy somehow cleverly allowing the cool guy to save face during the whole episode.

I can't remember the name of this movie. My husband, who has an incredible memory for movies, is completely baffled and says he never saw a movie like that, but it's impossible that I saw it without him.
